Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Boswellia ovalifoliolata bark extracts.

Paracetamol (PCM) hepatotoxicity is related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and excessive oxidative stress; natural antioxidant compounds have been tested as an alternative therapy. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective activity of an alcoholic extract of Boswellia ovalifoliolata (BO) bark against PCM-induced hepatotoxicity. BO extract also demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro, as well as scavenger activity against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Administration of PCM caused a significant increase in the release of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydroge

Googling the Guggul (Commiphora and Boswellia) for Prevention of Chronic Diseases.

Extensive research during last 2 decades has revealed that most drugs discovered today, although costs billions of dollars for discovery, and yet they are highly ineffective in their clinical response. For instance, the European Medicines Agency has approved 68 anti-cancer drugs, and out of which 39 has reached the market level with no indication of increased survival nor betterment of quality of life. Even when drugs did improve survival rate compared to available treatment strategies, most of these were found to be clinically insignificant. This is a fundamental problem with modern drug disc

Topical formulation of Boswellia nano emulsion in psoriasis mouse model.

Organ-specific autoimmune inflammatory skin disease is called psoriasis. Pharmacological study indicates that Boswellia serrata (BS) gum resin is an active herbal element that has a significant role in the management of inflammatory diseases. Because BAs are steroidal (lipophilic), their systemic bioavailability is restricted. Thermodynamically stable, transparent, optically isotropic, and oil-surfactant mixes with a small droplet size and excellent solubility capacity for lipophilic drugs are known as nano emulsions. In the present study, will test the production of Boswellia nano emulsion gel

Effects of Boswellia serrata in mouse models of chemically induced colitis.

Extracts from Boswellia serrata have been reported to have anti-inflammatory activity, primarily via boswellic acid-mediated inhibition of leukotriene synthesis. In three small clinical trials, boswellia was shown to improve symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and because of its alleged safety, boswellia was considered superior over mesalazine in terms of a benefit-risk evaluation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of boswellia extracts in controlled settings of dextran sulfate- or trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in mice. Our results suggest

Modulation of the immune system by Boswellia serrata extracts and boswellic acids.

Extracts from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata and some of is constituents including boswellic acids affect the immune system in different ways. Among the various boswellic acids 11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (KBA) and acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid have been observed to be active. However, also other boswellic acids may exhibit actions in the immune system. In the humoral defence system a mixture of boswellic acis at higher doses reduced primary antibody titres; on the other hand lower doses enhanced secondary antibody titres following treatment with sheep erythrocytes. In the cellular de

Effects of gum resin of Boswellia serrata in patients with chronic colitis.

Patients studied here suffered from chronic colitis characterized by vague lower abdominal pain, bleeding per rectum with diarrhoea and palpable tender descending and sigmoid colon. The inflammatory process in colitis is associated with increased formation of leukotrienes causing chemotaxis, chemokinesis, synthesis of superoxide radicals and release of lysosomal enzymes by phagocytes. The key enzyme for leukotriene biosynthesis is 5-lipoxygenase. Boswellic acids were found to be non-redox, non-competitive specific inhibitors of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. We studied the gum resin of Boswellia s

The Application of Copper Nanoparticles Green Formulated by Boswellia thurifera in the Treatment of Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the second most prevalent neurological disorder worldwide. It is mostly identified by abnormal electrical activity in multiple brain regions. The massive influx of Ca2+ into neurons is the main neurotoxic mechanism that leads to cell death and eventually neurodegeneration. Despite the abundance of antiseizure medications, many patients with refractory epilepsy do not benefit from the treatment. Nanomedicine is a viable alternative for boosting the central nervous system's bioavailability of anti-seizure medications. This study examined the anti-epileptic effects of CuNPs@Boswellia

Characterization of Boswellia rivae Engl Resin as a Potential Use for Pharmaceutical Excipient.

Pharmaceutical excipients derived from natural sources like resins are nowadays meritoriously used in the formulation of drugs. Resins of natural origin have many advantages over chemically synthesized substances; they are safer, nontoxic, less expensive, biodegradable, and widely available. To our knowledge, resins from plants have been not sufficiently explored for application in pharmaceutical formulations. Thus, in the present study, a resin isolated from Boswellia rivae Engl was characterized for its potential use as a pharmaceutical excipient. Method. The resin was extracted from the ole

Exploring Boswellia serrata Triterpenes: A New Frontier in Leukemia Inhibitory Factor Receptor Modulation.

Boswellia serrata, commonly known as Indian olibanum or Indian frankincense, is a medicinal plant recognized for its significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anticancer activities. In our investigation, the activity of its n-hexane extract was evaluated on targets never explored for Boswellia, mainly involved in hepatic fibrosis and cancer development. Since this extract exhibited a significant antagonistic activity on the interaction between leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and its receptor (LIFR), it was subjected to an untargeted metabolomic analysis using a high-resolution mass spectr
