Breast versus bottle feeding.

Significant or highly significant differences were found between groups of breast and bottle-fed infants with respect to the incidence of jaundice, time to passage of first yellow stool and early weight changes. Experimental parameters were carefully defined, and a simple stool colour comparator has been designed and developed. Breast feeding should be encouraged for its incidence is low in many European countries and it is the responsibility of the attending midwife to ensure that correct suckling techniques are achieved by mothers and infants at the earliest possible time after delivery.

Key issues to address with bottle-feeding.

Proper feeding during a baby's first year of life is crucial for a sound nutritional foundation. Because of this, there are several issues that must be addressed to ensure the child is fed properly. First, bottle-feeding moms should not be made to feel guilty about their feeding decision. It is also important to review feeding practices to avoid overfeeding and encourage positive nurturing techniques. Mothers should learn the key signals to watch for from their baby, such as sleep patterns and bowel movements. Also, it is crucial to teach parents the essential issues related to preparing bottl

Bottle-feeding legislation in Papua New Guinea.

Research in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in the developing world has indicted the dangers of bottle feeding infants. Following a failure to obtain the voluntary agreement of shopkeepers to restrict sales of infant-feeding bottles and teats, legislation was passed which placed these items on prescription. In order to obtain a prescription certain conditions have to be satisfied. A follow-up survey which was carried out in Port Moresby two years after the introduction of legislation indicated a significant decline in the extent of bottle feeding.

["Bottle feeding dependency" in children with developmental retardation].

We experienced five cases of developmentally retarded children with "bottle feeding dependency", that is, refusal against entry of purees or solid foods into the mouth. All five cases had moderate to severe mental retardations (DQ: 17-37). No abnormal oral reflexes or functions were present. All had been bottle fed and rejected any purees or solid foods for a long period by turning the head, hiding the face or struggling to avoid being fed. Finally we attempted to force them to eat. Despite their initial refusal, small amounts of pureed food was forcedly pushed into their mouth. As a result, t

Effects of Swaddling During Bottle Feeding in Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have immature oral feeding skills, affecting length of hospital stay and long-term feeding outcomes. Swaddling has positive effects on pain and stress responses, state regulation, and physiological stability in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Swaddling during bottle feeding may support preterm infant behavioral organization and oral feeding skills. Swaddling is used inconsistently during feeding in the NICU and has not been critically examined for effects on bottle feeding performance in preterm infants. PURPOSE: To examine the effects o

Evaluating the Use of Telepractice for Bottle-Feeding Assessments.

There is currently limited evidence supporting the use of telepractice to conduct bottle-feeding assessments. This study aimed to investigate the inter-rater reliability of bottle-feeding assessments conducted via synchronous telepractice (real-time videoconferencing). Secondary aims were to investigate parent and clinician satisfaction. Bottle-feeding skills of 30 children (aged 1 month-2 years) were simultaneously assessed by a telepractice SP (T-SP) at a remote location and an in-person SP (IP-SP) at the family home. A purpose-designed assessment form was used to evaluate: (1) developmental

Breast versus bottle: correlates of adolescent mothers' infant-feeding practices.

Since the 1970s, breast-feeding as the preferred method of infant feeding has increased in overall popularity. However, certain populations, particularly poor, young, black, and less-educated women, have been slow to adopt this method. This prospective study was undertaken to identify factors relating to the choice of infant-feeding method among inner-city adolescents. Two hundred fifty-four pregnant adolescents completed a questionnaire supplying information regarding attitudes toward and knowledge about breast-feeding, social support, personal experience, and other variables hypothesized to

The Experiences of Mothers Feeding Their Infants Later Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Bottle Feeding and Complementary Feeding Challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) more commonly experience feeding difficulty than their neurotypical (NT) peers, although less is known about how the feeding behaviors present during infancy. METHODS: Twenty-four mothers participated in interviews exploring their experiences feeding their autistic and NT children during the first year of life and the context behind feeding practices that may also contribute to feeding difficulty in autistic children during infancy. RESULTS: Thematic analysis identified four main themes: (1) bottle feeding and cup behaviors

Role of bottle feeding in the etiology of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

IMPORTANCE Bottle feeding has been implicated in the etiology of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS). Further data are needed to define the nature of this relationship and the clinical variables that influence it. OBJECTIVE To determine if bottle feeding after birth is associated with the development of HPS in infants. We hypothesized that bottle feeding is associated with an increased risk of HPS and that this risk is modified by other risk factors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Population-based case-control study of births from January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2009, using Washington Stat

The cleft seal for bottle-feeding--A report on case studies.

Clefting of the lip and palate is the most frequent craniofacial malformation that occurs in newborn babies. The greatest immediate challenge facing a neonate with a cleft is to take nourishment. In developing countries and particularly in rural areas, palatal obturators and other aids that can assist in feeding are not easily available or accessible. The aim of this study was to develop, evaluate and report on the cleft seal, a simple and inexpensive device that is used with a feeding bottle to promote nourishment of a neonate with a cleft palate. The cleft seal is made of either silicone or

Breastfeeding results in better hearing in newborns compared to bottle-feeding.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are a validated technique in newborn hearing screening that is regularly used in many countries. It reflects normal hearing or at least no more than 30 dB HL hearing loss. Breastfeeding has many advantages and some studies have demonstrated that it prevents otitis media by means of opening the Eustachian tube and clearing mucus in the middle ear which is perhaps also combined with immunological effects. A few studies have related how newborn feeding can vary the pass rate to TEOAE. The goal of this study was to investigate the

Lying behaviour and IgG-levels of newborn calves after feeding colostrum via tube and nipple bottle feeding.

Oesophageal tube feeding colostrum is used to ensure sufficient colostrum intake in newborn calves but the impact of tube feeding on animal behaviour is unclear. Therefore the objective of this study was to compare lying behaviour of tube-fed or bottle-fed dairy calves. Calves (n = 37) in 3 groups were offered 3·5 l colostrum 2 h after birth. Calves of the bottle group were fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the placebo tubing group were tubed for 4 min but no colostrum was given and they were then fed with a nipple bottle. Calves of the tubing group received 3·5 l colostrum via tube feeding.
