Bacterial pathogens of the bovine respiratory disease complex.

Pneumonia caused by the bacterial pathogens discussed in this article is the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality of the BRDC. Most of these infectious bacteria are not capable of inducing significant disease without the presence of other predisposing environmental factors, physiologic stressors, or concurrent infections. Mannheimia haemolytica is the most common and serious of these bacterial agents and is therefore also the most highly characterized. There are other important bacterial pathogens of BRD, such as Pasteurella multocida, Histophulus somni, and Mycoplasma bovis. Mixe

Bovine adenovirus prevalence and its role in bovine respiratory disease complex: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Bovine adenoviruses (BAdVs) are major contributors to the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC). A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to explore the epidemiology of BAdV across diverse cattle populations using different detection methods. The study showed a higher BAdV prevalence of 0.66 in general cattle populations using antibody detection, compared with 0.28 in cattle showing clinical signs. The study identified significant prevalence differences between BAdV-3 (0.87) and BAdV-7 (0.21) in general cattle populations. However, in clinical cattle, BAdV-3 and BAdV-7 showed

Myocardial Stress Biomarkers and Inflammatory Indices in Cattle With Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex.

BACKGROUND: Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is primarily considered a pulmonary disorder; however, hypoxia and systemic inflammation associated with this condition may also impose cardiovascular stress. OBJECTIVES: This exploratory study investigated myocardial stress biomarkers in cattle with BRDC and evaluated their relationships with haematological inflammatory indices and ratio-derived enzyme patterns reflecting tissue injury dynamics. METHODS: Twenty-four Simmental crossbred cattle aged 6-10 months were included, comprising 16 BRDC-affected animals and 8 clinically healthy con

Detection of bovine respiratory disease complex-related pathogens in nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multi-etiologic disease that significantly impacts the cattle industry. Nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) is the nasal mucosal immune system that protects against various pathogens; however, reports on its pathology are limited. We compared the pathologic impact of BRDC-related viruses on the NALT and lungs of 10 pneumonic and 3 negative control Japanese black (JB) calves. Three bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) persistently infected Holstein calves were examined as positive control; all 3 calves had BVDV in situ hybridization (ISH)-p

Investigating bovine coronavirus in Indian calves: Incidence, molecular evidence, and pathological role in bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC).

BACKGROUND: Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) and bacterial pathogens contribute to bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) in young calves. However, the role of BCoV in BRDC occurrence and site-specific respiratory pathology in India remains poorly explored. AIMS: This study aimed to assess BCoV prevalence in BRDC cases. METHODS: We investigated 406 weaner calves (166 cattle, 240 buffaloes) up to ≤1 year, with respiratory distress and pulmonary lesions. RESULTS: BRDC cases exhibited 0.98% BCoV occurrence, confirmed by partial N gene amplification (172 bp) via RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC

Three viruses of the bovine respiratory disease complex apply different strategies to initiate infection.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is the major cause of serious respiratory tract infections in calves. The disease is multifactorial, with either stress or reduced immunity allowing several pathogens to emerge. We investigated the susceptibility of bovine airway epithelial cells (BAEC) to infection by the three major viruses associated with the BRDC: bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) and bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (BPIV3). For this purpose, two culture systems for well-differentiated BAEC were used: the air-liquid interface (ALI) syste

Effects of diclofenac sodium and tilmicosin on cardiac biomarkers in calves with bovine respiratory disease complex.

This study aimed to evaluate the cardiotoxic potential of diclofenac sodium (DKFS) and tilmicosin (TIL), administered individually or in combination, in calves affected by bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC). Although both drugs are widely used in BRDC protocols, limited data exist regarding their cardiac safety in cattle. Forty clinically diagnosed BRDC calves were randomised into four groups receiving either oxytetracycline alone (control), or in combination with DKFS, TIL, or both. Blood samples were collected at baseline (0 h), 8 and 24 h after treatment to measure cardiac and hepati

Coinfection of Swiss cattle with bovine parainfluenza virus 3 and Mycoplasma bovis at acute and chronic stages of bovine respiratory disease complex.

Viral agents such as bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine parainfluenza virus 3 (BPIV-3) are considered primary infectious agents in bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC). Information regarding the pathogenesis of BRDC is scarce, especially at an advanced chronicity stage, in addition to ongoing coinfection with other primary agents such as Mycoplasma bovis. Based on a retrospective review of histology slides from 104 autopsy cases, we classified cases according to type of pneumonia and chronicity. We performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) for BRSV, BPIV-3, and M. bovis as we

Evaluation of responses to vaccination of Angus cattle for four viruses that contribute to bovine respiratory disease complex.

Although vaccination is an effective measure in reducing the risk of bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) in cattle, BRDC losses remain significant. Increasing the efficacy of vaccination depends on elucidating the protective immune response to different antigens included in vaccines, determining the best timing for vaccination, and understanding the impact of the age of the calf on vaccination. This study measured the serum antibodies present in calves following vaccination against 4 viruses commonly associated with BRDC: bovine viral diarrhea virus type 1 and 2 (BVDV1 and BVDV2), bovine

Detection of viruses associated with bovine respiratory disease complex in samples collected from Albanian cattle during 2022/2023.

The bovine respiratory disease complex causes significant morbidity and mortality with numerous aetiological agents known to contribute to its development, including several bacteria and viruses. In Albania, there is limited information on the prevalence or genetic makeup of viral bovine respiratory disease complex pathogens, which limits mitigation strategies and effective responses such as targeted vaccination against circulating viruses. Nasal or pulmonary samples were collected from cattle in 2022/2023, and then, PCR of bovine Betacoronavirus gravedinis (BoCoV) and Orthopneumovirus bovis (

Evaluating the microbiome of two sampling locations in the nasal cavity of cattle with bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC).

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multifactor disease, and disease incidence may be associated with an animal's commensal bacterial populations (microbiome) in the upper nasal cavity. Identifying these commensal bacterial populations in the upper nasal cavity may help us to understand the impact of the microbiome on incidence of BRDC in cattle. Various sampling techniques have previously been utilized to evaluate the microbiome of different locations of the upper nasal cavity in cattle. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether bacterial populations of the nasal cavity var

A review of the biology of bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1), its role as a cofactor in the bovine respiratory disease complex and development of improved vaccines.

Infection of cattle by bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) can lead to upper respiratory tract disorders, conjunctivitis, genital disorders and immune suppression. BHV-1-induced immune suppression initiates bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), which costs the US cattle industry approximately 3 billion dollars annually. BHV-1 encodes at least three proteins that can inhibit specific arms of the immune system: (i) bICP0 inhibits interferon-dependent transcription, (ii) the UL41.5 protein inhibits CD8+ T-cell recognition of infected cells by preventing trafficking of viral peptides to the sur

Development and evaluation of a P. multocida A-M. haemolytica A6-rLkt combined vaccine for enhanced control of bovine respiratory disease complex.

Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRD) poses a major threat to the cattle industry, primarily caused by the bacterial pathogens Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) and Mannheimia haemolytica (M. haemolytica). Current management strategies heavily rely on vaccines and antibiotics; however, the overuse of antibiotics has led to significant resistance issues, which underscores the urgent need for more effective vaccination approaches. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a novel combined vaccine that incorporates P. multocida A, M. haemolytica A6, and recombinant leukotoxin (rLkt), with th

Immunological Response to Single Pathogen Challenge with Agents of the Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex: An RNA-Sequence Analysis of the Bronchial Lymph Node Transcriptome.

Susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is multi-factorial and is influenced by stress in conjunction with infection by both bacterial and viral pathogens. While vaccination is broadly used in an effort to prevent BRD, it is far from being fully protective and cases diagnosed from a combination of observed clinical signs without any attempt at identifying the causal pathogens are usually treated with antibiotics. Dairy and beef cattle losses from BRD are profound worldwide and genetic studies have now been initiated to elucidate host loci which underlie susceptibility with the objec
