[Pathogenesis and treatment of brachial plexus neuritis].

Neuralgic amyotrophy (NA, also known as Parsonage-Turner syndrome) is a distinct peripheral nervous system (PNS) disorder, characterized by sudden attacks of severe neuropathic pain usually in the shoulder and/or arm. The neuralgia commonly disappears after a few days to weeks, and consequently patchy paresis with amyotrophy appears. The available evidence suggests that NA is essentially idiopathic immune-mediated neuritis of the brachial plexus, and also has a complex pathogenesis that includes an underlying predisposition, susceptibility to dysfunction of some PNS structure, and a trigger fo

Acute brachial plexus neuritis: an uncommon cause of shoulder pain.

Patients with acute brachial plexus neuritis are often misdiagnosed as having cervical radiculopathy. Acute brachial plexus neuritis is an uncommon disorder characterized by severe shoulder and upper arm pain followed by marked upper arm weakness. The temporal profile of pain preceding weakness is important in establishing a prompt diagnosis and differentiating acute brachial plexus neuritis from cervical radiculopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder and upper arm musculature may reveal denervation within days, allowing prompt diagnosis. Electromyography, conducted three to four we

[A case of subacute necrotizing lymphadenitis complicated with brachial plexus neuritis].

A 22-year-old female noted a low grade fever and swelling of the cervical lymph nodes in May 1997, and later developed a dry cough. She was diagnosed to have interstitial pneumonitis, and then administration of corticosteroids alleviated her symptoms. On February 6, 1998, however, a high fever recurred and her swollen cervical lymph node on the right side was biopsied on February 9, 1998. A histological examination revealed an increased number of histiocytes and karyorrhexis of the lymphocytes in the paracortical areas, and she was therefore diagnosed to have histiocytic necrotizing lymphadeni

Brachial Plexus Neuritis Associated With Streptococcus agalactiae Infection: A Case Report.

Brachial plexus neuritis is reportedly caused by various factors; however, it has not been described in association with Streptococcus agalactiae. This is a case report of a patient diagnosed with brachial plexus neuritis associated with pyogenic arthritis of the shoulder. A 57-year-old man visited the hospital complaining of sudden weakness and painful swelling of the left arm. The diagnosis was pyogenic arthritis of the left shoulder, and the patient was treated with open irrigation and debridement accompanied by intravenous antibiotic therapy. S. agalactiae was isolated from a wound culture

[Monoparesis due to the brachial plexus neuritis by herpes zoster virus--report of a case].

A 73-year-old woman suffering from the acute onset monoparesis of her right arm which followed the skin eruption with mild sensory disturbance of right C4-6 level, was reported. Electrophysiological examinations revealed the brachial plexus neuritis and axonal degeneration of the proximal portion, with the evidence of herpes zoster infection. Her paresis of the right arm gradually improved without any medication during her hospital course. It was concluded that herpes zoster should be considered to be one of the causes of acute onset brachial plexopathy.

Recurrent bilateral brachial plexus neuritis following rapid semaglutide-induced weight loss: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus neuritis, or Parsonage–Turner syndrome, is an uncommon neuropathy marked by acute pain followed by weakness, often triggered by infection, vaccination, trauma, or metabolic stress but the exact cause of this disease remained unknown. Semaglutide is widely used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. With its increasing use, there have been reports suggesting a possible association with neuropathies. Currently, there is no information suggesting a possible association between the use of semaglutide and brachial plexus neuritis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-

Chronic Brachial Plexus Neuritis That Developed into Typical Neuralgic Amyotrophy and Positively Responded to Immunotherapy.

Based on the hypothesis that autoimmunity plays a role in the pathogenesis of neuralgic amyotrophy (NA), immunotherapy is sometimes administered. Early intervention is recommended for a good prognosis. We herein report the case of a 55-year-old man who presented with neuralgia, weakness, and muscle atrophy in his right shoulder girdle and upper arm, which progressed for ten months following a marine sports accident. The patient was diagnosed with NA. His neurological deficits gradually improved after several courses of immunotherapy, suggesting that in addition to being effective for treating

The Role of Positional Release Therapy in Treating Recalcitrant Brachial Plexus Neuritis: A Case Report.

A 17-year-old female soccer player presented with severe right shoulder pain and scapular winging due to brachial plexus neuritis. The patient was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner syndrome, a rare condition often resistant to traditional physical therapy, which typically persists for 6 months to years, at times requiring surgical intervention. Over the course of 6 weeks, the patient received positional release therapy once a week coupled with electrical modalities, massage, and a daily home exercise program. This case report is unique because we believe we were the first to use positional relea

Bilateral, hypertrophic neuritis of the brachial plexus in a cat: magnetic resonance imaging and pathological findings.

A 9-year-old Burmese cat was presented for investigation of a subacute onset of bilateral forelimb paresis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervico-thoracic vertebral column and brachial plexus revealed a bilaterally symmetrical, severe and diffuse swelling of the spinal nerves forming the caudal part of the brachial plexus. Histopathology of the abnormal nerve roots, spinal nerves and brachial plexi showed inflammatory and marked proliferative changes with similar features to that of hypertrophic neuritis of man. Hypertrophic neuritis in man is a rare, tumor-like, chronic inflammatory perip

Brachial Plexus Neuritis Associated With Anti-Programmed Cell Death-1 Antibodies: Report of 2 Cases.

Recently, guidelines have been outlined for management of immune-related adverse events occurring with immune checkpoint inhibitors in cancer, irrespective of affected organ systems. Increasingly, these complications have been recognized as including diverse neuromuscular presentations, such as demyelinating and axonal length-dependent peripheral neuropathies, vasculitic neuropathy, myasthenia gravis, and myopathy. We present 2 cases of brachial plexopathy developing on anti-programmed cell death-1 checkpoint inhibitor therapies (pembrolizumab, nivolumab). Both cases had stereotypic lower-trun

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease complicated with brachial plexus neuritis in a young woman: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare necrotizing lymphadenitis. Brachial plexus neuritis is an exceptionally rare complication of KFD. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old Asian female was diagnosed with KFD via excisional biopsy of a posterior cervical lymph node. Four days after the biopsy, pain and disability occurred in her left arm and shoulder. While Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suspected compression of the brachial plexus nerves, the ultrasound indicated inflammatory changes consistent with neuritis. Diagnosis was challenging; however, distinguishing between mechanical

Magnetic resonance imaging in bilateral brachial neuritis with pure sensory involvement.

Brachial neuritis is characterized by shoulder and arm pain followed by weakness and atrophy of affected muscles and sensory loss in the arm. Isolated sensory involvement of the brachial plexus is very rare. Diagnosis of brachial neuritis is usually based on clinical history and examination, with the confirmation by electrodiagnostic tests. A 72-year-old woman presented with numbness and tingling in the bilateral upper extremities. While nerve conduction examination revealed only sensory abnormalities of the bilateral upper extremities, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed thickening and hy

Post-operative emergence of acute brachial neuritis following posterior cervical laminectomy with fusion: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic brachial plexus neuritis or neuralgic amyotrophy is a rare neurological condition whose true etiology currently remains unknown. Epidemiologically, the incidence of this condition is exceptionally rare with only 1.6 cases for every 100,000 people (Turner and Parsonage, 1987). Symptoms present an initial acute and sudden pain to the shoulder girdle and upper arm which is followed by a sense of profound weakness and numbness to the upper arm (Parsonage and Turner, 1948). Localized neuropathy within the arm-pit region may also be presented. The pain often exacerbates upon

A case of relapsing-remitting facial palsy and ipsilateral brachial plexopathy caused by HSV-1.

The etiologies of Bell's palsy and brachial neuritis remain uncertain, and the conditions rarely co-occur or reoccur. Here we present a woman in her twenties who had several relapsing-remitting episodes with left-sided facial palsy and brachial neuropathy. The episodes always started with painful left-sided oral blisters. Repeat PCRs HSV-1 DNA from oral vesicular lesions were positive. Extensive screening did not reveal any other underlying cause. Findings on MRI T2-weighted brachial plexus STIR images, using a 3.0-Tesla scanner during an episode, were compatible with brachial plexus neuritis.

The Utility of an Epidural Steroid Injection for the Treatment of Idiopathic Brachial Neuritis.

Idiopathic brachial neuritis is an uncommon disorder that predominately affects the superior and middle trunks of the brachial plexus. Severe throbbing and aching shoulder pain is initially present for a period of days to weeks, followed by severe weakness and atrophy that can develop for an extended period of months to years. There are currently no known treatments for brachial neuritis, with the standard of care consisting of analgesics and corticosteroids, which typically provide minimal to no benefit in most cases. In this case, we will present a case of a patient who was diagnosed with id
