On a collection of crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) from Mozambique, Africa.

This monograph focuses on a collection of previously unidentified brachyuran crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura), present in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center (formerly Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie), Leiden, the Netherlands. All the examined material was collected between 1982 and 1987 from the mangroves and the littoral zone around Inhaca Island, Mozambique, Africa. A total of 1162 specimens are identified. The specimens belong to 90 different species of crabs from 26 families. Five new records of crab species for Mozambican waters are found: Hiplyra elegans (Gravier, 1920), Hiplyr

Seminal fluid production and sperm packaging in dromiid crabs (Brachyura, Podotremata).

Reproductive anatomy, including sperm storage structures and sperm transfer, is an important feature used to analyze phylogenetic relationships among taxa. We describe the male reproductive anatomy, seminal fluid production and packaging of spermatozoa in the vas deferens of primitive crabs. In all species of Dromiidae, the testes were tubular type and the vas deferens is a tube with a simple epithelium. The spermatozoa are in a central mass immersed in type I secretion, forming a large spermatic cord. In Moreiradromia antillensis and Dromia erythropus the spermatic cord is surrounded by a mor

The evolutionary journey of freshwater crabs of the genus Potamon (Decapoda: Brachyura: Potamidae).

AIM: Freshwater ecosystems host a rich biodiversity, including freshwater crabs. The family Potamidae is a diverse group of freshwater crabs with a Palearctic and Oriental distribution. Specifically, the genus Potamon is found in the Middle East, Southern Europe, and Northern Africa. Potamon species are considered true freshwater crabs due to their total independence from the marine environment, which makes them idea organisms to study historical freshwater connectivity dynamics. In this study we aim to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of the genus Potamon and discuss the historical fr

Toxicity of mercury during the embryonic development of Chasmagnathus granulatus (Brachyura, Varunidae).

Ovigerous females of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulatus were exposed to mercury (0.1mg/L) during the entire, early, or late embryonic development. A delay in the egg incubation period and some morphological abnormalities were detected in larvae hatched from exposed females. Particularly, hypopigmentation of body chromatophores was the abnormality that showed the highest incidence, this incidence being greater when ovigerous females were exposed to mercury either during the totality or just the first half of the egg incubation period. In contrast, the effect of mercury on the morpholog

Physiology and morphology of visual movement detector neurons in a crab (Decapoda: Brachyura).

Although visually elicited behaviors have been extensively studied in crabs, their investigation at the neurophysiological level is scant. The present study is a physiological and morphological description of intracellularly recorded and dye injected visual movement detector neurons that respond to the same stimulus that elicits the escape response in the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus. The neurons were investigated in intact animals. The response of movement detector neurons to the danger stimulus (an object moving above the animal) consists of a strong discharge of action potentials frequentl

Checklist of the shallow-water marine Brachyura (Crustacea: Decapoda) of Barbados, West Indies.

Here we provide an illustrated and annotated checklist of brachyuran crabs associated with shallow water marine habitats (nearshore rubble and subtidal) in Barbados, West Indies (13.1939°N, 59.5432°W). Twenty-one (21) survey sites in nearshore rubble and shallow subtidal habitats were surveyed between October 2018 to September 2021. Nearshore rubble habitats were surveyed at low tide during the day and night periods. Shallow nearshore subtidal habitats were surveyed every 9-12 days from February to October 2019 using crab traps placed ~ 4 m deep on sandy and rocky bottoms. A total of 1,640 spe

Barcoding and species delimitation of Iranian freshwater crabs of the Potamidae family (Decapoda: Brachyura).

Freshwater ecosystems are under multiple threats in modern times such as water extraction for human consumption, industries and agricultural activities, water contamination and habitat destruction for example. At the same time the biodiversity of these ecosystems are often poorly studied, especially in arid countries such as Iran. In this work, we study one of the ecologically important members of Iranian freshwater fauna, freshwater crab species of the genus Potamon. Here, we barcoded the different populations occurring in the country and delimited the species to allow for a better understand

Juvenile morphology of the ornamental crab Mithraculus forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1875 (Crustacea, Brachyura).

The morphology of juveniles of Mithraculus forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, raised in the laboratory, is described. The larvae were obtained from ovigerous females collected in the wild, maintained in the rearing system for culture of crabs (400 L). A total of 229 larvae (zoea I), from 7 females were distributed in lots of 20 larvae kept in glass flasks (500 ml), with seawater circulation and temperature and salinity constants, which were checked daily for molts or deaths. After the larvae reached the juvenile stage, exuviae and dead specimens were deposited in a scientific collection. We analy

On a collection of freshwater and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura) from Mindanao Island, the Philippines.

The brachyuran fauna of the large southern Philippine island of Mindanao is poorly known, with only a few freshwater and estuarine crab species described or recorded in the last 30 years. Renewed interest in crab biodiversity has led to recent, small-scale surveys (2016-2019) of freshwater and estuarine habitats in various localities in Mindanao, which have yielded a good diversity of brachyuran crabs. As a result, a total of 26 species of brachyuran crab, representing 6 families (Hymenosomatidae, Oziidae, Gecarcinidae, Sesarmidae, Varunidae, and Ocypodidae), are reported here. Of these, 15 sp

Variants in the histochemical patterns of lipids in the hepatopancreas of Scylla serrata (Forskal) (Brachyura, Decapoda).

The highest concentrations of phospholipid, neutral lipid and fatty acids were observed in the R cells and connective tissue of the hepatopancreas of Scylla serrata. The basal parts of the B cells and apical parts of the cells lining the main duct also showed moderate presence of these substances. The E cells however, except at their cell membranes were found to be devoid of lipids. F cells on the other hand exhibited lipoid complexes. Considerable reduction in the staining intensity of fatty acids were noticed 4 h after the bilateral ablation of eyestalks, neutral lipid undergo depletion 24 h

A new type of brachyuran seminal receptacle in the masked crab Ethusa mascarone (Brachyura, Ethusidae).

The reproductive system of the female Ethusa mascarone was studied with a combination of histological and MRI-techniques. The study reveals a completely new type of eubrachyuran seminal receptacle. This receptacle consists of two largely separate chambers that engage with each other in a manner similar to shaking hands. One chamber facing the medial axis is lined by cuticle while the second chamber consists of a thick holocrine epithelium. Both chambers are connected by two openings of a unique structure. First, the glandular chamber opens ventro-laterally to the cuticle chamber via a laterall

Effect of copper on hatching and development of larvae of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Decapoda, Brachyura).

Ovigerous females of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata were exposed to 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, and 3 mg/L of copper during the egg incubation period. Regarding egg loss, a higher effect was observed at higher copper concentrations: 80% of the females lost their eggs at 0.5 mg/L, whereas no hatching was seen in those exposed to 3 mg/L. A significant decrease was found in the number of hatched larvae in females exposed to 0.5 mg/L, as was a significant decrease in the duration of the incubation period. In addition, several morphological abnormalities were seen and observed. Hydropsy and atrophy

The ultrastructure of the posterior midgut caecum of Pachygrapsus crassipes (Decapoda, Brachyura) adapted to low salinity.

The effects of salinity adaptation and of composition and tonicity of fixatives upon the ultrastructure of the posterior midgut caecum (PMC) of Pachygrapsus crassipes have been studied. The PMC epithelium consists of a single layer of columnar cells with a microvillous border. The apical cytoplasm contains numerous mitochondria, lysosomes, and much smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are situated in the perinuclear cytoplasm. This epithelium resembles other transporting epithelia in that the basal cytoplasm has an extensive system of branched tubules f

Morphology of the gastric mill teeth in dotillid crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura: Dotillidae) from Indonesia.

The gastric mill is a prominent structure in the digestive system of brachyuran crabs, consisting of a median tooth plate and a pair of lateral tooth plates. Among crab species that are deposit feeders, the morphology and size of the gastric mill teeth are correlated with the preferred substrate types and food spectrum. In this study, we provide a detailed description of the morphology of the median and lateral teeth of the gastric mills in eight species of dotillid crabs from Indonesia, and compare them in relation to habitat preferences and molecular phylogeny. The anatomy and histology of the midgut and hindgut of Charybdis (Goniohellenus) truncata (Fabricius, 1798) (Decapoda: Brachyura).

The midgut of C. (G.) truncata accounts for half of the postgastric intestinal tract. The paired anterior midgut caeca arise just behind the pyloric stomach, on either side of the midgut. The unpaired posterior midgut caecum arises dorsally at the rear end of the midgut, where this joins the hindgut. The midgut and its caeca help in the digestive absorption of food. The hindgut is of ectodermal origin and is lined with chitin of a collagenous nature. The connective tissue of the anterior part of the hindgut is packed with tegumental glands whose secretion contains both sulphated and weakly aci

Updated checklist of semi-terrestrial and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) of Barbados, West Indies.

Considering the growing threats to the biodiversity of small Caribbean islands (e.g., habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change), it is important to establish biodiversity inventories that serve as baselines for monitoring and evaluation of conservation efforts. In Barbados (West Indies), the most recent comprehensive taxonomic account of brachyuran crabs came from Rathbun (1921) reporting the specimens collected by the University of Iowa Barbados-Antigua Expedition in 1918. The present study fills the 100-year gap in knowledge by providing an updat

On two new species of arboreal crabs from phytotelms in Sarawak, Borneo (Crustacea: Brachyura: Gecarcinucidae: Arachnothelphusa).

Two new species of the gecarcinucid freshwater crab genus Arachnothelphusa are described from the Malaysian state of Sarawak in Borneo; one from Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary and another from Bako National Park. Arachnothelphusa rimba n. sp. is distinctive in possessing very long legs and a male first gonopod which has a cylindrical proximal part of the terminal segment, with the distal part sharply tapering to an acute tip. Arachnothelphusa bako n. sp. is superficially closest to A. kadamaiana from Sabah, but differs markedly by its narrower epistome, and proportionately shorter third max
