Microbially mediated Fe-N coupled cycling at different hydrological regimes in riparian wetland.

Although the significance of the coupled Fe- and N- cycling processes on biogeochemical transformation in riparian wetlands is well-known, the regulation associated with the changes on the microbiotas during different hydrological regimes remains unclear. This study performed field investigations on the bacterial community compositions (BCC) and specific genera associated to Fe- and N- cycling in the rhizosphere soil and sediments in a riparian wetland in Poyang lake, China. The predominant phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Nitrospirae from all the samples remarkably decreased after lon

Identification of a novel Afipia species isolated from an Indian flying fox.

An old world fruit bat Pteropus giganteus, held in captivity and suffering from necrosis of its wing digits, failed to respond to antibiotic therapy and succumbed to the infection. Samples submitted to the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease were tested for viral infection. Vero E6 cells exhibited minor but unique cytopathic effects on second blind passage, and full CPE by passage four. Utilizing an unbiased random amplification technique from cell culture supernatant, we identified a bacterium belonging to the Bradyrhizobiaceae. Purification of cell culture supernatant on TY media reve

Extended local similarity analysis (eLSA) reveals unique associations between bacterial community structure and odor emission during pig carcasses decomposition.

Soil burial and composting methods have been widely used for the disposal of pig carcasses. The relationship between bacterial community structure and odor emission was examined using extended local similarity analysis (eLSA) during the degradation of pig carcasses in soil and compost. In soil, Hyphomicrobium, Niastella, Rhodanobacter, Polaromonas, Dokdonella and Mesorhizobium were associated with the emission of sulfur-containing odors such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl disulfide. Sphingomonas, Rhodanobacter, Mesorhizobium, Dokdonella, Leucobacter and Truepera were associ

Denitrification: microbiology and ecology.

The ability of some aerobic microorganisms to reduce nitrogen oxides, especially nitrate, to gaseous products enables them to grow in oxygen-limiting conditions by using the oxides as electron acceptors. Denitrifying respiration is not as efficient as oxygen respiration so growth is slower. The ability to denitrify is found in a wide variety of unrelated bacteria and even in some fungi, and biochemical mechanisms are now moderately well understood. Major factors regulating denitrification are the availability of the nitrogen oxides, the availability of reductant (mostly organic carbon compound

The effect of clay particles on the activity of suspended autotrophic nitrifying bacteria and on the performance of an air-lift reactor.

Clay minerals have some properties, namely a high surface area and the ability of ion exchange that may exert some effects on microbial systems. It is often difficult to know the way the clay is exerting its influence and whether its presence improves a given metabolic process. The present work concerns the study of the effect of the addition of powdered kaolin to autotrophic nitrification systems, and includes the study of the effects of the particles on the activity of a suspended nitrifying bacteria consortium and on the performance of an air-lift biofilm reactor used for tertiary nitrifica

The nature of nitrogen: an overview.

Most of the nitrogen available to the biosphere exists as N2 in the atmosphere, and is not useful to most organisms until it is "fixed" either biologically or abiotically (by lightning or aurorae, or industrially). Once it is fixed into NH3, usually it is either assimilated and transformed into organic N or nitrified into NO3-. Organic N can be transformed back into NH3 by ammonification. Nitrate can be converted into N2O by nitrification and denitrification, and to N2 by denitrification. Such N2O and N2 production results in nitrogen loss from ecosystems and a nitrogen gain to the atmospheric

Spontaneous axon regeneration is preserved despite gut microbiota disruption after spinal cord injury in larval lampreys.

Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) often result in permanent disabilities in humans. One major reason for the lack of recovery is the inability of adult mammalian descending neurons to regenerate their axons after injury. In contrast, several fish species, such as the sea lamprey, exhibit spontaneous axon regeneration and successful functional recovery following a complete SCI. Recent studies have shown that a SCI in rodents and humans induces gut microbiome dysbiosis, which can impair recovery. Therefore, our goal was to examine how the microbiome changes after SCI in a regenerating animal model (th

Nitric oxide reductase-targeted real-time PCR quantification of denitrifier populations in soil.

The quantification of denitrifying bacteria is a component in the further understanding of denitrification processes in the environment. Real-time PCR primers were designed to target two segments of the denitrifier population (cnorB(P) [Pseudomonas mandelii and closely related strains] and cnorB(B) [Bosea, Bradyrhizobium, and Ensifer spp.]) in agricultural soils based on functional cnorB (nitric oxide reductase) gene sequences. Total population numbers were measured using 16S rRNA gene real-time PCR. Two soil microcosm experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 examined the response of the indig

Characterization of the denitrifying bacterial community in a full-scale rockwool biofilter for compost waste-gas treatment.

The potential denitrification activity and the composition of the denitrifying bacterial community in a full-scale rockwool biofilter used for treating livestock manure composting emissions were analyzed. Packing material sampled from the rockwool biofilter was anoxically batch-incubated with 15N-labeled nitrate in the presence of different electron donors (compost extract, ammonium, hydrogen sulfide, propionate, and acetate), and responses were compared with those of activated sludge from a livestock wastewater treatment facility. Overnight batch-incubation showed that potential denitrificati

Airway Candida diversity in COPD patients and its differential stimulatory effects on lung inflammation in mice.

BACKGROUND: The airway microbiome is altered in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) individuals with high fungal diversity, which manifests mainly as an increase in the diversity of Candida genera. Acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) is a crucial process in disease progression. The airway Candida species diversity in AECOPD patients and their differential stimulatory effects on airway inflammation in mice remain unclear. AIMS AND METHODS: To investigate the diversity of airway Candida species involved in AECOPD and assess their differential effects on airway inflammation in mice. We c
