Novel Convolutional Neural Network for Automated Multical Sclerosis Brain Lesion

Enhancing Brain-Computer Interface Performance by Incorporating Brain-to-Brain Coupling.

Human cooperation relies on key features of social interaction in order to reach desirable outcomes. Similarly, human-robot interaction may benefit from integration with human-human interaction factors. In this paper, we aim to investigate brain-to-brain coupling during motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) training using eye-contact and hand-touch interaction. Twelve pairs of friends (experimental group) and 10 pairs of strangers (control group) were recruited for MI-based BCI tests concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Event-related desynchronization (

Modeling Brain Dynamics in Brain Tumor Patients Using the Virtual Brain.

Presurgical planning for brain tumor resection aims at delineating eloquent tissue in the vicinity of the lesion to spare during surgery. To this end, noninvasive neuroimaging techniques such as functional MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging fiber tracking are currently employed. However, taking into account this information is often still insufficient, as the complex nonlinear dynamics of the brain impede straightforward prediction of functional outcome after surgical intervention. Large-scale brain network modeling carries the potential to bridge this gap by integrating neuroimaging data with

Regional brain volumetry and brain function in severely brain-injured patients.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between residual brain tissue in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) and the clinical condition is unclear. This observational study aimed to quantify gray (GM) and white matter (WM) atrophy in states of (altered) consciousness. METHODS: Structural T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were processed for 102 severely brain-injured and 52 healthy subjects. Regional brain volume was quantified for 158 (sub)cortical regions using Freesurfer. The relationship between regional brain volume and clinical characteristics of patients with DOC and conscious brain-

Noninvasive brain stimulation and brain oscillations.

Recent technological advances in the field of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) have allowed to interact with endogenous brain oscillatory activity, the main neural communication code of our brain, opening new scenarios for transient modifications of cognitive and behavioral performances: such a possibility can be capitalized both for research purposes in healthy subjects, as well as in the context of therapeutic and rehabilitative settings. Among NiBS methodologies, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been the first used to this purpose, and also thanks to the technical development

Understanding brain networks and brain organization.

What is the relationship between brain and behavior? The answer to this question necessitates characterizing the mapping between structure and function. The aim of this paper is to discuss broad issues surrounding the link between structure and function in the brain that will motivate a network perspective to understanding this question. However, as others in the past, I argue that a network perspective should supplant the common strategy of understanding the brain in terms of individual regions. Whereas this perspective is needed for a fuller characterization of the mind-brain, it should not

An Unpredictable Brain Is a Conscious, Responsive Brain.

Severe traumatic brain injuries typically result in loss of consciousness or coma. In deeply comatose patients with traumatic brain injury, cortical dynamics become simple, repetitive, and predictable. We review evidence that this low-complexity, high-predictability state results from a passive cortical state, represented by a stable repetitive attractor, that hinders the flexible formation of neuronal ensembles necessary for conscious experience. Our data and those from other groups support the hypothesis that this cortical passive state is because of the loss of thalamocortical input. We ide

Brain development and the genetics of brain development.

The progress made in the understanding of the genetics of human brain malformations has lead to insight into the formation of brain and into mechanisms of disease affecting brain. It bears upon neurologists and geneticists to recognize the patterns of diseases of brain formation, to properly diagnose such disorders, to assess the recurrence risk of these malformations, and to guide families with appropriate expectations for outcomes. This article may serve as a guide to neurologists in their approach to these disorders. Because this area is one of rapid progress, the clinician is advised to se

[Brain Stem and Para-Brain Stem Lesions].

Surgeries for brainstem lesions and adjacent areas needs meticulous manipulation in the profoundly deep surgical field. Moreover, it is associated with a high risk of complications pertinent to resection. The opportunity for a surgeon to amass extensive surgical experience in these lesions is limited. Additionally, the reduced tissue mobility in the brainstem, compared to other lesions, makes selecting the optimal surgical approach critical. Preoperative simulation is pivotal in surmounting these challenges. However, the limitations of preoperative simulations should be recognized in accuratel

Cannabinoids, Blood-Brain Barrier, and Brain Disposition.

Potential therapeutic actions of the cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are based on their activity as analgesics, anti-emetics, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-seizure compounds. THC and CBD lipophilicity and their neurological actions makes them candidates as new medicinal approaches to treat central nervous system (CNS) diseases. However, they show differences about penetrability and disposition in the brain. The present article is an overview about THC and CBD crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and their brain disposition. Several findings indicate tha

Left brain, right brain: facts and fantasies.

Handedness and brain asymmetry are widely regarded as unique to humans, and associated with complementary functions such as a left-brain specialization for language and logic and a right-brain specialization for creativity and intuition. In fact, asymmetries are widespread among animals, and support the gradual evolution of asymmetrical functions such as language and tool use. Handedness and brain asymmetry are inborn and under partial genetic control, although the gene or genes responsible are not well established. Cognitive and emotional difficulties are sometimes associated with departures

Fentanyl-Induced Brain Hypoxia Triggers Brain Hyperglycemia and Biphasic Changes in Brain Temperature.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid used extensively in humans for general anesthesia and analgesia. Fentanyl has emerged as a recreational drug, often in combination with heroin, and can result in lethality during overdose. Fentanyl is well characterized as an anesthetic, but the basic physiological effects of fentanyl in the brain when taken as a drug of abuse are largely unknown. We used high-speed amperometry in freely moving rats to examine the effects of intravenous fentanyl at doses within the range of possible human intake (3-40 μg/kg) on oxygen and glucose levels in nucleus accumben

Brain age in chronic traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with greater 'brain age' that may be caused by atrophy in grey and white matter. Here, we investigated 'brain age' in a chronic TBI (≥10 years) sample. We examined whether 'brain age' increases with years post injury, and whether it is associated with injury severity, cognition and functional outcome. We recruited 102 participants with moderate to severe TBI aged between 40 and 85 years. TBI participants were assessed on average 22 years post-injury. Seventy-seven healthy controls were also recruited. Participants' 'brain age' was determined using T1-

Vascularized Brain Organoid: A Versatile Platform Models Brain Cancer and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Human iPSC-derived brain organoids are revolutionizing tools to study layers biology, synergize disease modeling, and accelerate therapeutic discoveries that overcome obstacles in monolayer cell culture or animal models. The neurovascular unit including vasculature and microglia is critical for brain development, maintenance of synaptic plasticity and neural activity, and the high metabolic demands of long-term culture. We present a methodology to incorporate these important components during organoid generation and discuss potential approach, aiming consistent production of vascularized organ

Overdose Risk and Brain Injury (Traumatic Brain Injury/Acquired Brain Injury), A Commentary.

OBJECTIVE: This commentary seeks to evaluate existing knowledge about the relationship between brain injury (BI) and overdose (OD), to unify distant bodies of literature, and to enhance prevention and treatment for opioid OD among individuals with BI. BACKGROUND: There is a hidden epidemic of undiagnosed BI in the United States. Due to lack of screening, the vast majority of BI sufferers do not know they have a BI. Not only are those with BI at elevated risk for opioid use, misuse, and opioid use disorder, but also they are at elevated risk for OD. Conversely, those with OUD and those who exp

Brain interstitial glycerol correlates with evolving brain injury in paediatric traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: A better understanding of the complex pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is needed to improve our current therapies. Cerebral microdialysis (CMD) is an advanced method to monitor the brain, but little is known about its parameters in children. Brain glycerol, one of the CMD variables, is an essential component of the phospholipid bilayer cell membrane and is considered a useful marker of tissue hypoxia in adults. This study examined the time course of glycerol and its associations in paediatric TBI. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we collected data on childr
