Association of retinal layer thickness with brain volume and cortical thickness in older adults.

This study explored associations between macular retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, brain volume, and cortical thickness in older adults. A total of 166 community-dwelling participants over 65 years old (mean 75.2 ± 5.3; 61.4% women) without dementia or ocular pathologies underwent 3D T1 MRI and macular RNFL thickness measurements using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Voxel-based morphometry, adjusting for age, sex, and total intracranial volume (uncorrected p < 0.001, cluster size threshold ≥ 100 voxels), showed uncorrected correlations between outer RNFL thickness and

Network-level analysis of cortical thickness of the epileptic brain.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) characterized by an epileptogenic focus in the medial temporal lobe is the most common form of focal epilepsy. However, the seizures are not confined to the temporal lobe but can spread to other, anatomically connected brain regions where they can cause similar structural abnormalities as observed in the focus. The aim of this study was to derive whole-brain networks from volumetric data and obtain network-centric measures, which can capture cortical thinning characteristic of TLE and can be used for classifying a given MRI into TLE or normal, and to obtain additio

Altered Regional Brain Cortical Thickness in Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

RATIONALE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 2-5% of all children and is associated with cognitive and behavioral deficits, resulting in poor school performance. These psychological deficits may arise from brain injury, as seen in preliminary findings of lower gray matter volume among pediatric OSA patients. However, the psychological deficits in OSA are closely related to functions in the cortex, and such brain areas have not been specifically assessed. The objective was to determine whether cortical thickness, a marker of possible brain injury, is altered in children with OSA. METHODS:

Brain cortical thickness in ADHD: age, sex, and clinical correlations.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have shown reduced cortical thickness (CT) in individuals with ADHD, but this abnormality disappears with age, suggesting developmental delay. However, cross-sectional MRI studies have shown reduced CT, suggesting abnormal development. The aim of this study was to compare whole-brain CT in male and female children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD with whole-brain CT in matched control participants. METHOD: MRI scans were performed on ADHD and control participants. RESULTS: CT data revealed differences in right hemisphere (RH)

Interaction of Alzheimer Disease and Traumatic Brain Injury on Cortical Thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an accelerated course of dementia, although biological relationships are incompletely understood. METHODS: The study examined 1124 participants, including 343 with Alzheimer disease (AD), 127 with AD with TBI, 266 cognitively normal adults with TBI, and 388 cognitively normal adults without TBI. Cortical thickness was quantified from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data. Multiple linear regression was used to determine the interaction between AD and TBI on cortical thickness. RESULTS: Among those with AD, TBI was associated

Cognitive function, P3a/P3b brain potentials, and cortical thickness in aging.

The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between the P3a/P3b brain potentials, cortical thickness, and cognitive function in aging. Thirty-five younger and 37 older healthy participants completed a visual three-stimuli oddball ERP (event-related potential)-paradigm, a battery of neuropsychological tests, and MRI scans. Groups with short vs. long latency, and low vs. high amplitude, were compared on a point by point basis across the entire cortical mantle. In the young, thickness was only weakly related to P3. In the elderly, P3a amplitude effects were found in parietal areas, th

Genetic Association Between Schizophrenia and Cortical Brain Surface Area and Thickness.

IMPORTANCE: Schizophrenia is a complex heritable disorder associated with many genetic variants, each with a small effect. While cortical differences between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls are consistently reported, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent of shared genetic architecture between schizophrenia and brain cortical surface area (SA) and thickness (TH) and to identify shared genomic loci. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Independent genome-wide association study data on schizophrenia (Psychiatric Genomics Consorti

Cell-Specific Gene-Expression Profiles and Cortical Thickness in the Human Brain.

Neurobiological underpinnings of cortical thickness in the human brain are largely unknown. Here we use cell-type-specific gene markers to evaluate the contribution of 9 neural cell-types in explaining inter-regional variations in cortical thickness and age-related cortical thinning in the adolescent brain. Gene-expression data were derived from the Allen Human Brain Atlas (and validated using the BrainSpan Atlas). Values of cortical thickness/thinning were obtained with magnetic resonance imaging in a sample of 987 adolescents. We show that inter-regional profiles in cortical thickness relate

Cortical thickness in pediatric mild traumatic brain injury including sports-related concussion.

This investigation explored whether differences in cortical thickness could be detected in children who sustained a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) compared to those with orthopedic injury (OI) and whether cortical thickness related parental reporting of symptoms. To achieve this objective, FreeSurfer®-based cortical thickness measures were obtained in 330 children, 8 to 15 years of age, with either a history of mTBI or OI. Imaging was performed in all participants with the same 3 Tesla MRI scanner at six-months post-injury, where a parent-rated Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI) was

Abnormal Brain Structural Covariance Networks of Cortical Thickness in Cocaine Use Disorder.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a serious global public health problem, characterized by compulsive drug seeking and impaired cognitive control. Previous studies using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) or surface-based morphometry (SBM) have identified regional alterations in grey matter volume and cortical thickness (CT); purely local morphological analyses are insufficient to capture coordinated patterns of interregional change. In this study, we employed structural covariance networks (SCNs) analysis to investigate abnormalities in the macroscopic topological organization of the brain in individu

Brain volumes and regional cortical thickness in young females with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe mental illness, with an unknown etiology. Magnetic resonance imaging studies show reduced brain volumes and cortical thickness in patients compared to healthy controls. However, findings are inconsistent, especially concerning the anatomical location and extent of the differences. The purpose of this study was to estimate and compare brain volumes and regional cortical thickness in young females with AN and healthy controls. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging data was acquired from young females with anorexia nervosa (n = 23) and healthy controls

Comparison of Surface Area and Cortical Thickness Asymmetry in the Human and Chimpanzee Brain.

Comparative study of the structural asymmetry of the human and chimpanzee brain may shed light on the evolution of language and other cognitive abilities in humans. Here we report the results of vertex-wise and ROI-based analyses that compared surface area (SA) and cortical thickness (CT) asymmetries in 3D MR images obtained for 91 humans and 77 chimpanzees. The human brain is substantially more asymmetric than the chimpanzee brain. In particular, the human brain has 1) larger total SA in the right compared with the left cerebral hemisphere, 2) a global torque-like asymmetry pattern of widespr

Soccer heading and concussion are not associated with reduced brain volume or cortical thickness.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world and, since it is a contact sport, players are at risk for head injury, including concussion. Here, we proposed to investigate the association of heading and concussion with macroscopic brain structure among adult amateur soccer players. For this study, 375 amateur soccer players (median age 23 years) completed HeadCount-12m to estimate heading over the 12 months prior to MRI and lifetime concussion. T1-weighted 3D magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo (MP-RAGE) MRI was performed at 3 Tesla. Parcellation was performed using Freesurf

The cortical thickness of tricenarian cocaine users assembles features of an octogenarian brain.

It has been suggested that substance use disorders could lead to accelerated biological aging, but only a few neuroimaging studies have investigated this hypothesis so far. In this cross-sectional study, structural neuroimaging was performed to measure cortical thickness (CT) in tricenarian adults with cocaine use disorder (CUD, n1  = 30) and their age-paired controls (YC, n1  = 30), and compare it with octogenarian elder controls (EC, n1  = 20). We found that CT in the right fusiform gyrus was similar between CUD and EC, thinner than the expected values of YC. We also found that regarding CT

Mapping Genetic Topography of Cortical Thickness and Surface Area in Neonatal Brains.

Adult twin neuroimaging studies have revealed that cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA) are differentially influenced by genetic information, leading to their spatially distinct genetic patterning and topography. However, the postnatal origins of the genetic topography of CT and SA remain unclear, given the dramatic cortical development from neonates to adults. To fill this critical gap, this study unprecedentedly explored how genetic information differentially regulates the spatial topography of CT and SA in the neonatal brain by leveraging brain magnetic resonance (MR) images from 2

Contusions bias cortical thickness estimates after traumatic brain injury: A TRACK-TBI study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by both focal and diffuse pathology. Automated cortical thickness estimation is widely used to quantify structural brain changes following TBI; however, the impact of focal pathology such as contusions on cortical thickness estimates in TBI remains unknown. METHODS: We evaluated lesion-induced bias in cortical thickness under three lesion-handling strategies in 86 TRACK-TBI participants with MRI at 2 weeks and 6 months post-injury. Cortical thickness was estimated using the ANTsNetCT longitudinal pipeline with the default pipeline (No

Cerebellum crus II cortical thickness as a cognitive brain reserve in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Although the cerebellum plays a role in the pathophysiology of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), its association with cognition remains unclear. We investigated whether the cognition-related cerebellar lobules are associated with baseline and longitudinal cognition in PD. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled 203 drug-naïve patients with PD who underwent dopamine transporter (DAT) scans, high-resolution brain magnetic resonance imaging, and detailed neuropsychological testing at baseline. We analyzed the association of cerebellar lobular volume and c

Childhood abuse and reduced cortical thickness in brain regions involved in emotional processing.

BACKGROUND: Alterations in gray matter development represent a potential pathway through which childhood abuse is associated with psychopathology. Several prior studies find reduced volume and thickness of prefrontal (PFC) and temporal cortex regions in abused compared with nonabused adolescents, although most prior research is based on adults and volume-based measures. This study tests the hypothesis that child abuse, independent of parental education, predicts reduced cortical thickness in prefrontal and temporal cortices as well as reduced gray mater volume (GMV) in subcortical regions duri
