[The brain drain: theoretical framework and hypotheses].

"This article studies the 'brain drain' issue from the sociological perspective. It analyzes the various reasons why students from developing countries go to North American and European universities and why they decide either to return or not to return to their own country after graduation. The author...concludes that, although there are political, socioeconomic and academic factors, one's decision to return or not to return to one's country depends mainly on individual aspirations (personal and cultural development) and collective aspirations (perceived possibilities of playing a constructive

Global estimates of high-level brain drain and deficit.

Brain drain, the international migration of scientists in search of better opportunities, has been a long-standing concern, but quantitative measurements are uncommon and limited to specific countries or disciplines. We need to understand brain drain at a global level and estimate the extent to which scientists born in countries with low opportunities never realize their potential. Data on 1523 of the most highly cited scientists for 1981-1999 are analyzed. Overall, 31.9% of these scientists did not reside in the country where they were born (range 18.1-54.6% across 21 different scientific fie

EXPRESS: Measuring solute clearance across brain states: methods and the sleep-brain-drain debate.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic hypothesis posits that cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid bulk-flow clears brain waste, with increased waste transport during sleep. Recent studies reporting the opposite have generated substantial controversy. Three issues underlie the controversy surrounding this hypothesis and are the subject of this reviewMethods:We critically reviewed these three issues. First, we identified heterogeneity in the methods used to quantify brain "clearance" and evaluated their validity, recalculating rate constants from published data where these were not originally reporte

Brain drain or brain gain? Effects of high-skilled international emigration on origin countries.

How does emigration of highly educated citizens of low-income countries to high-income countries affect the economies of the origin countries? The direct effect is "brain drain"-a decrease in the country's human capital stock. However, there may also be indirect "brain gain" effects. This review summarizes evidence that uses causal inference methods to reveal mechanisms that may lead to brain drain, gain, or circulation. Collectively, the weight of the evidence suggests that migration opportunities often increase human capital stock in origin countries and produce downstream beneficial effects

Seeking greener pastures: attitudes towards brain drain among turkish medical students.

BACKGROUND: Medical brain drain is a critical issue for healthcare systems worldwide. This study investigated attitudes toward brain drain and influencing factors among medical students at Pamukkale University. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,129 students (80.8% response rate) during the 2021-2022 academic year. Data, including sociodemographics, views on studying/working abroad, and the 16-item Brain Drain Attitude Scale (BDAS), were collected via a structured online questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, the Mann‒Whitney U test, the Kruskal‒Wallis test, and multiple li

Medical Brain Drain: The Role of Job Attributes and Individual Traits.

Medical brain drain poses a major challenge for health systems, reducing physician supply and undermining public investment in medical training. Prior work examined migration flows and their macroeconomic determinants. This study uses a discrete choice experiment to assess how individual background and personality traits shape medical student intentions to migrate and whether job attributes are valued differently at home and abroad. We surveyed 527 senior medical students from 12 Italian universities between November 2020 and July 2021, using Italy as a pertinent case given high physician emig

From brain drain to brain circulation: evidence from women scientists in OWSD Honduras National Chapter.

INTRODUCTION: Honduras invests minimally in research and development (0.06% of GDP), contributing to highly qualified professional emigration. When individuals migrate, they may return to Honduras or become part of the scientific diaspora. The exchange of knowledge between professionals abroad and those in their country of origin constitutes "brain circulation", a process with significant potential to support scientific ecosystems in contexts of low research and development investment. This study examined how the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Honduras Nation

Brain drain in Emergency Medicine in Lebanon, building locally and exporting globally.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the growth of Emergency Medicine (EM) globally, shortages of EM-trained physicians persist in many countries, disproportionately affecting lower middle/low-income countries (LMIC/LIC). This study examines the career paths of graduates of an Emergency Medicine residency-training program established in Lebanon with the aim of building local capacity in EM. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: This descriptive study utilizes secondary data sourced from an alumni database that includes nine cohorts of graduates from an Emergency Medicine residency program at the American University of Beirut M

Flexible low-profile external ventricular drain catheter for real-time brain monitoring.

External ventricular drainage is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures in the world for acute hydrocephalus, which must be performed carefully by a neurosurgeon. Although various neuromonitoring external ventricular drain (EVD) catheters have been utilized, they still suffer from rigidity and bulkiness to mitigate post-EVD placement trauma. Here, we introduce a flexible and low-profile smart EVD catheter using a class of technologies with sensitive electrical materials, seamless integration, and flexible mechanics, which serves as a highly soft and minimally invasive device to monito

A Novel External Ventricular Drain Sensor to Improve Acquired Brain Injury Monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: The insufficiency of current methods to capture the context and environment of neurocritical care can negatively impact patient outcomes. Insertion of an external ventricular drain (EVD) into the ventricles to monitor intracranial pressure (ICP) is a common lifesaving procedure for acquired brain injury patients. Yet, nursing interventions that significantly affect the measured ICP value, such as changing the EVD stopcock position, are poorly documented. Environmental factors like light and noise levels are not monitored as standard of care despite worse outcomes in patients affi

Introduction of skull bone fragments into the brain during external ventricular drain placement.

OBJECTIVE: To report an observation of small high attenuation foci in the tract of external ventricular drain on computed tomographic (CT) scan after removal of the drain and propose an explanation for this observation. METHODS: Six patients with small high attenuation foci in the ventricular drain tract seen on CT after removal of the drain were retrospectively identified. The CT studies before, during, and after ventricular drainage were reviewed for the size, shape, location, and time of appearance of these foci. RESULTS: In all patients, the high attenuation foci in the drain's tract wer

Brain Drain for Brain Gain: Potential Applications of Robotic-assisted Lymphatic Microsurgery in the Management of Neurological Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The central nervous system (CNS) was long believed to be devoid of lymphatic drainage. However, the discovery of the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatics has revolutionized our understanding of cerebrospinal fluid homeostasis and neuroimmune interactions. The glymphatic system facilitates perivascular cerebrospinal fluid-interstitial fluid exchange and promotes neurotoxic waste clearance, whereas meningeal lymphatics serve as conduits between the CNS and peripheral lymphatic circulation. Dysfunction in these lymphatic efflux pathways has been implicated in the pathogenesis of

Brain Drain: Psychosocial Factors Influence Recovery Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury-3 Recommendations for Clinicians Assessing Psychosocial Factors.

Mild traumatic brain injury is a major global public health concern. While most people recover within days to months, 1 in 5 people with mild traumatic brain injury report persistent, disabling symptoms that interfere with participation in work, school, and sport. People with injuries to regions other than the head may report similar symptoms. The biopsychosocial model of health explains this phenomenon in terms of factors associated with recovery that are not biomedical. Important psychosocial factors include poor recovery expectations and pretraumatic and posttraumatic psychological symptoms
