Human brain maturation is a complex, lifelong process that can now be examined in detail using neuroimaging techniques. Ongoing projects scan subjects longitudinally with structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), enabling the time-course and anatomical sequence of development to be reconstructed. Here, we review recent progress on imaging studies of development. We focus on cortical and subcortical changes observed in healthy children, and contrast them with abnormal developmental changes in early-onset schizophrenia, fetal alcohol syndrome, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) a

Over 20 distinct cerebral cortical areas contain spatial map representations of the visual field. These retinotopic, or visuotopic, cortical areas occur not only in the occipital lobe but also in the parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes. The cognitive influences of visuospatial attention operate via these cortical maps and can support selection of multiple objects at the same time. In early visual cortical areas, spatial attention enhances responses of selected items and diminishes the responses to distracting items. In higher order cortex, the maps support a spatial indexing role, keeping tr

Functional neuroimaging with positron emission tomography, single photon emission computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetoencephalography have provided powerful tools to elucidate anatomo-functional impairment underlying movement disorders such as dystonic movements. They have revealed that presymptomatic cerebral abnormalities may be a common feature in dystonia whatever the clinical status. Techniques using specific markers have recently focused on the type of receptors that may be dysactivated and on the kind of neurotransmitter that may be dysregulated in dystonia.

Brain EEG mapping has been recorded during three different conditions, rest closed eyes, rest open eyes, and reading task, in a group of 22 dyslexic children, age mean 9.3 years, range 8-11, and control group of normal readers of the same age. All the subjects were right-handed, and laterality was assessed through the Edinburgh test. The individual maps in dyslexic and controls were averaged, and mean maps of both groups were obtained for a very different experimental condition. Rest closed eyes maps of dyslexics and controls disclose a powerful and symmetric alpha over occipital areas, with h

Stress can cause severe damage to the CNS and contribute to an increased risk of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Gaining more insight into the neurobiology of stress is essential to treating neurological disorders associated with stress, which account for a high percentage of the world's disease burden. However, because of complicated variations in stressor types, stress perception, and preceding exposure to stressors, studying the impacts of stress is challenging. Gender, age, and timing are other crucial variables that can influence the stress response. Behavioral, physiological, gen

Vision begins in the retina, which extracts salient features from the environment and encodes them in the spike trains of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the output neurons of the eye. RGC axons innervate diverse brain areas (>50 in mice) to support perception, guide behavior, and mediate influences of light on physiology and internal states. In recent years, complete lists of RGC types (∼45 in mice) have been compiled, detailed maps of their dendritic connections drawn, and their light responses surveyed at scale. We know less about the RGCs' axonal projection patterns, which map retinal infor

Childhood learning difficulties and developmental disorders are common, but progress toward understanding their underlying brain mechanisms has been slow. Structural neuroimaging, cognitive, and learning data were collected from 479 children (299 boys, ranging in age from 62 to 223 months), 337 of whom had been referred to the study on the basis of learning-related cognitive problems. Machine learning identified different cognitive profiles within the sample, and hold-out cross-validation showed that these profiles were significantly associated with children's learning ability. The same machin

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a novel brain stimulation technique that has advanced the understanding of brain physiology, and has diagnostic value as well as therapeutic potential for several neuropsychiatric disorders. The stimulation involves restricted cortical and subcortical regions, and, when used in combination with a visually guided technique, results in improved accuracy to target specific areas, which may also influence the outcome desired. This article reviews the principles underlying the mechanism of action of TMS, and discusses its use to obtain functional maps of t

In this review, we summarize the contribution of functional imaging to the question of nociception in humans. In the beginning of the 90's, brain areas supposed to be involved in physiological pain processes were almost exclusively the primary somatosensory area (SI), thalamus, and anterior cingulate cortex. In spite of these a priori hypotheses, the first imaging studies revealed that the main brain areas and those providing the most consistent activations in pain conditions were the insular and the SII cortices, bilaterally. This has been confirmed with other techniques such as intracerebral

Functional mapping of the activated brain, the location and extent of the activated area were determined, during motor tasks and sensory stimulation using fMRI superimposed on 3 D anatomical MRI. Twelve volunteers were studied. The fMR images were acquired using a 2 D gradient echo echo planar imaging sequence. The 3D anatomical MR images of the whole brain were acquired using a conventional 3D gradient echo sequence. Motor tasks were sequential opposition of fingers, clenching a hand and elbow flexion. Somatosensory stimulation were administered by scrubbing the palm and sole with a washing s

The glymphatic system is a fluid-transport framework in which cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) enters the brain along perivascular routes, exchanges with interstitial fluid (ISF), and exits toward venous, perineural, and meningeal lymphatic pathways enabling waste clearance. Recent studies have clarified the anatomical components that regulate solute movement. The perivascular astrocyte endfeet, which are enriched in polarized aquaporin-4 (AQP4) expression, create a high-permeability water interface that facilitates CSF-ISF exchange. Multiscale physical drivers such as cardiac pulsation, arteriolar v

OBJECTIVE: We developed a curriculum map of the neurology residency program's academic half-day (AHD) at our institution from 2018 to 2024 to assess topic coverage and identify gaps relative to board certification content.
METHODS: We cataloged 280 unique AHD lectures over 6 years, recording attributes including title, date, duration, speaker, and subspecialty. These were compared against the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) certification blueprint using chi-square analysis.
RESULTS: The 280 lectures totaled 358.5 h. We found significant differences across multiple subspecia

Central nervous system tumors represent a heterogeneous group of diseases, mainly localized in the brain. Among them, malignant brain tumors represent some of the most aggressive cancers. In adults, only approximately 30% of patients diagnosed with glioblastoma survive beyond two years. Similarly, several pediatric-predominant brain tumors, including medulloblastoma, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, and ependymoma, remain among the deadliest solid tumors in children. Therefore, a deeper understanding of brain tumor biology is imperative for the development of more effective therapeutic strate

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) provides valuable information about tumor microstructure. However, partial volume effects with free water, from cerebrospinal fluid or edema, may bias the ADC and obscure areas of reduced diffusion. This work evaluated a new method for mapping diffusivity in tissue without free water contamination in brain tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used high b-value spherical b-tensor encoding to map fluid suppressed mean diffusivity in tissue. The method was evaluated using simulations and analysis of 3 T MRI data in 60 patients: 55 adu

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit characteristic cognitive and behavioral differences, but no systematic pattern of neuroanatomical differences has been consistently found. Recent neurodevelopmental models posit an abnormal early surge in subcortical white matter growth in at least some autistic children, perhaps normalizing by adulthood, but other studies report subcortical white matter deficits. To investigate the profile of these alterations in 3D, we mapped brain volumetric differences using a relatively new method, tensor-based morphometry. 3D T1-weighted brain MRIs of

The purpose of this study was to compare the localization in the brain of calcitonin-induced anorexia to the distribution of calcitonin binding sites (as described by others). We, thus, performed an extensive mapping of brain structures to determine those involved in calcitonin-induced anorexia. A significant anorexia is found after injection of calcitonin (15 ng in 0.3 microliters) into several brain areas. Forebrain: lateral septum, lateral part of the anterior commissure, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis; hypothalamus: floor of the anterior part of the hypothalamus, paraventricular n

A field mapping technique was used to detect changes in the local magnetic field in 14 tumors, five hematomas, one lacunar infarct, and two cases of multiple sclerosis. These changes were attributed to variations in the tissue susceptibility. A partial or complete rim of changed susceptibility was detected at the margin of five of the tumors and localized changes were seen within two of the tumors. All five hematomas displayed susceptibility effects. These were seen at the rim of the hematoma in all cases but central effects were also seen in four cases. One area of probable lacunar infarction
