Evidence for slow brain waves: a dynamical approach.

Various techniques of non-linear dynamics have been applied with success to EEG data and have provided a new insight into brain dynamics. Among these the 'recurrence plot' is a powerful tool for revealing the presence of drift or periodicities and is easily obtained in the framework of a non-linear dynamical analysis. When this analysis is applied to the EEG recorded from a patient suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease one observes the presence of slow periodicities of the order of 58 sec. We suggest that the recurrence plots are powerful tools for discovering hidden periodicities of EEG as

Brain-wide properties of slow waves across vigilance states.

Until recently, slow waves (SWs) were considered to be highly specific, if not exclusive, to sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in particular. During NREM sleep, they are proposed to track and contribute to normalization of homeostatic sleep pressure. However, recent evidence has identified typical SWs during wakefulness and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep. SWs during wakefulness have been regarded as intrusions of sleep, supported by the finding of an associated down-state of neural activity. Although this suggests that the underlying neurobiology of SWs might be shared across vigil

Reorganization of Human Brain Waves Across Diverse States of Consciousness.

Brain waves are ubiquitous phenomena of human brain activity. As they propagate, they coordinate neural communication, shaping conscious perception. Understanding how brain waves unfold across space and time is thus critical for uncovering the neural mechanisms that support and suppress consciousness. Here, we analyzed data from the Human Connectome Project alongside multiple independent human datasets of various states of consciousness collected during non-rapid eye movement sleep, propofol anesthesia, and psychedelic states produced by lysergic acid diethylamide, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, psil

The function of 'brain waves': a cybernetic model of electroencephalography.

Electroencephalograms recorded from sleeping subjects are reinterpreted, from first principles, to explain the relationship between the observed wave-forms and cerebral processes. The manifestations of narcolepsy, namely, sleep paralysis, hypnopompic hallucinations and cataplexy are consistent with a hypothesis that the disorder is the result of entrainment of cerebral waves, causing almost instantaneous descent into a REM sleep state.

Biomechanical assessment of brain dynamic responses due to blast pressure waves.

A mechanized and integrated computational scheme is introduced to determine the human brain responses in an environment where the human head is exposed to explosions from trinitrotoluene (TNT), or other high-yield explosives, in military applications. The procedure is based on a three-dimensional (3-D) non-linear finite element method (FEM) that implements a simultaneous conduction of explosive detonation, shock wave propagation, blast-head interactions, and the confronting human head. The processes of blast propagation in the air and blast interaction with the head are modeled by an Arbitrary

Brain waves and brain wiring: the role of endogenous and sensory-driven neural activity in development.

Neural activity is critical for sculpting the intricate circuits of the nervous system from initially imprecise neuronal connections. Disrupting the formation of these precise circuits may underlie many common neurodevelopmental disorders, ranging from subtle learning disorders to pervasive developmental delay. The necessity for sensory-driven activity has been widely recognized as crucial for infant brain development. Recent experiments in neurobiology now point to a similar requirement for endogenous neural activity generated by the nervous system itself before sensory input is available. He

Astrocytic Calcium Waves Signal Brain Injury to Neural Stem and Progenitor Cells.

Brain injuries, such as stroke or trauma, induce neural stem cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) to a neurogenic response. Very little is known about the molecular cues that signal tissue damage, even over large distances, to the SVZ. Based on our analysis of gene expression patterns in the SVZ, 48 hr after an ischemic lesion caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion, we hypothesized that the presence of an injury might be transmitted by an astrocytic traveling calcium wave rather than by diffusible factors or hypoxia. Using a newly established in vitro system we show that calcium waves in

Optimal flickering light stimulation for entraining gamma waves in the human brain.

Although light flickering at 40 Hz reduced Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathologies in mice by entraining gamma waves, it failed to reduce cerebral amyloid burden in a study on six patients with AD or mild cognitive impairment. We investigated the optimal color, intensity, and frequency of the flickering light stimulus for entraining gamma waves in young adults. We compared the event-related synchronization (ERS) values of entrained gamma waves between four different light colors (white, red, green, and blue) in the first experiment and four different luminance intensities in the second experiment

KCl-induced cortical spreading depression waves more heterogeneously propagate than optogenetically-induced waves in lissencephalic brain: an analysis with optical flow tools.

Although cortical spreading depolarizations (CSD) were originally assumed to be homogeneously and concentrically propagating waves, evidence obtained first in gyrencephalic brains and later in lissencephalic brains suggested a rather non-uniform propagation, shaped heterogeneously by factors like cortical region differences, vascular anatomy, wave recurrences and refractory periods. Understanding this heterogeneity is important to better evaluate the experimental models on the mechanistics of CSD and to make appropriate clinical estimations on neurological disorders like migraine, stroke, and

Dynamic origin of spike and wave discharges in the brain.

Spike and wave discharges are the main electrographic characteristic of a number of epileptic brain disorders including childhood absence epilepsy and photosensitive epilepsy. The basic dynamic mechanism that underlies the occurrence of these abnormal electrical patterns in the brain is not well understood. The current paper aims to provide a dynamic explanation for features and generation mechanism of spike and wave discharges in the brain. The main proposition of this study is that epileptic seizures could be interpreted as a resonance phenomenon rather than a limit cycle behavior. To shows

The WAVE complex in developmental and adulthood brain disorders.

Actin polymerization and depolymerization are fundamental cellular processes required not only for the embryonic and postnatal development of the brain but also for the maintenance of neuronal plasticity and survival in the adult and aging brain. The orchestrated organization of actin filaments is controlled by various actin regulatory proteins. Wiskott‒Aldrich syndrome protein-family verprolin-homologous protein (WAVE) members are key activators of ARP2/3 complex-mediated actin polymerization. WAVE proteins exist as heteropentameric complexes together with regulatory proteins, including CYFIP

Angiographic Pulse Wave Coherence in the Human Brain.

A stroke volume of arterial blood that arrives to the brain housed in the rigid cranium must be matched over the cardiac cycle by an equivalent volume of ejected venous blood. We hypothesize that the brain maintains this equilibrium by organizing coherent arterial and venous pulse waves. To test this hypothesis, we applied wavelet computational methods to diagnostic cerebral angiograms in four human patients, permitting the capture and analysis of cardiac frequency phenomena from fluoroscopic images acquired at faster than cardiac rate. We found that the cardiac frequency reciprocal phase of a

Plateau-wave phenomenon (II). Occurrence of brain herniation in patients with and without plateau waves.

From 1980 to 1989, during intracranial pressure (ICP) recording, brain herniation (central transtentorial herniation associated with uncal herniation) developed in 15 patients as a result of aneurysmal rebleeding, uncontrollable brain swelling and/or oedema in spite of attempts at treating increased ICP. The relationship between the ICP level at which herniation occurred and the ICP fluctuation patterns in continuous ICP recordings prior to the development of the herniation was studied retrospectively. As for the ICP fluctuation patterns, the patients were assigned to 2 groups on the basis of

The Persistent Paradox of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REMS): Brain Waves and Dreaming.

The original conceptualization of REM sleep as paradoxical sleep was based on its EEG resembling wakefulness and its association with dreaming. Over time, the concept of paradox was expanded to include various associations with REM sleep, such as dream exclusivity, high recall, and pathophysiology. However, none of these associations are unique to REM sleep; they can also occur in other sleep states. Today, after more than fifty years of focused research, two aspects of REMS clearly retain paradoxical exclusivity. Despite the persistent contention that the EEG of human REMS consists of wake-li

A thoracic mechanism of mild traumatic brain injury due to blast pressure waves.

The mechanisms by which blast pressure waves cause mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are an open question. Possibilities include acceleration of the head, direct passage of the blast wave via the cranium, and propagation of the blast wave to the brain via a thoracic mechanism. The hypothesis that the blast pressure wave reaches the brain via a thoracic mechanism is considered in light of ballistic and blast pressure wave research. Ballistic pressure waves, caused by penetrating ballistic projectiles or ballistic impacts to body armor, can only reach the brain via an internal mecha

Positive temporal sharp waves in preterm infants with and without brain ultrasound lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical significance of neonatal positive temporal sharp waves (PTS) is controversial. The aim of this work is to study (1) PTS incidence in preterm infants with or without major ultrasound lesion (MUL) per gestational age (GA), and (2) the relationship between PTS in both sleep states and other electroencephalographic (EEG) findings with poor prognoses. METHODS: 97 preterm infants of <27-36 weeks GA, and 12 full-term healthy infants were presented. Prospective study included (1) neurodevelopmental assessment at 40-42 weeks conceptional age (CA), (2) serial neurosonography, and (3

Propagating cortical waves coordinate sensory encoding and memory retrieval in the human brain.

Complex behavior entails a balance between taking in sensory information from the environment and utilizing previously learned internal information. Experiments in behaving mice have demonstrated that the brain continually alternates between outward and inward modes of cognition, switching its mode of operation every few seconds. Further, each state transition is marked by a stereotyped cascade of neuronal spiking that pervades most forebrain structures. Here we analyzed large fMRI datasets to demonstrate that a similar switching mechanism governs the operation of the human brain. We found tha
