Metabolite Profiling and Antimicrobial Activities of Brassica rapa ssp. narinosa (Tatsoi), Brassica rapa var. narinosa × chinensis (Dacheongchae), and Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis (Pakchoi).

Pakchoi and Tatsoi are agriculturally and commercially important subspecies of Brassica rapa. Dacheongchae is a new crop generated via the hybridization of Tatsoi and Pakchoi. Metabolite profiles of carbohydrates, sugar alcohols, amines, amino acids, carotenoids, phenolics, organic acids, and glucosinolates were carried out in the three B. rapa cultivars. The majority of amino acids were higher in Dacheongchae than in Pakchoi and Tatsoi. In addition to the amino acid content, higher contents of phenolic compounds and carotenoids were obtained in Dacheongchae. Similarly, Dacheongchae and Pakcho

Sequence and structure of Brassica rapa chromosome A3.

BACKGROUND: The species Brassica rapa includes important vegetable and oil crops. It also serves as an excellent model system to study polyploidy-related genome evolution because of its paleohexaploid ancestry and its close evolutionary relationships with Arabidopsis thaliana and other Brassica species with larger genomes. Therefore, its genome sequence will be used to accelerate both basic research on genome evolution and applied research across the cultivated Brassica species. RESULTS: We have determined and analyzed the sequence of B. rapa chromosome A3. We obtained 31.9 Mb of sequences, o

Characterization and expression profiles of miRNAs in the triploid hybrids of Brassica napus and Brassica rapa.

BACKGROUND: Polyploidy provides a means of interspecific genome transfer to incorporate preferable traits from progenitor to progeny. However, few studies on miRNA expression profiles of interspecific hybrids of B. napus (AnAnCnCn) and B. rapa (ArAr) have been reported. RESULTS: Here, we apply small RNA sequencing to explore miRNA expression patterns between B. napus, B. rapa and their F1 hybrid. Bioinformatics analysis identified 376, 378, 383 conserved miRNAs and 82, 76, 82 novel miRNAs in B. napus, B. rapa and the F1 hybrid, respectively. Moreover, 213 miRNAs were found to be differentiall

Phytochemical and Health-Beneficial Progress of Turnip (Brassica rapa).

Despite the advancement of medical science, diseases are part-and-parcel of human life. Plants have provided humans with medicines since time immemorial, and are still one of the primary sources for drug discovery. Brassica rapa L., commonly known as turnip, is one of the world's oldest cultivated vegetables. Besides being an important vegetable and source of oil, turnip is also used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of headaches, chest complaints, rheumatisms, oedemas, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and rabies. Glucosinolates and isothiocyanates (mainly 2-phenylethyl, 4-pentenyl, and 3-buten

Enhanced glucosinolates in root exudates of Brassica rapa ssp. rapa mediated by salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate.

Elicitation studies with salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate (MJ) inducing a targeted rhizosecretion of high levels of anticarcinogenic glucosinolates in Brassica rapa ssp. rapa plants were conducted. Elicitor applications not only led to an accumulation of individual indole glucosinolates and the aromatic 2-phenylethyl glucosinolate in the turnip organs but also in turnip root exudates. This indicates an extended systemic response, which comprises the phyllosphere with all aboveground plant organs and the rhizosphere including the belowground root system and also root exudates. Both elic

Chemical Profile and Biological Activities of Brassica rapa and Brassica napus Ex Situ Collection from Portugal.

This study aimed to analyse the chemical profile and biological activities of 29 accessions of Brassica rapa (turnips) and 9 of Brassica napus (turnips and seeds) collections, maintained ex situ in Portugal. HPLC-HRMS allowed the determination of glucosinolates (GLS) and polyphenolic compounds. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were determined by using relevant assays. The chemical profiles showed that glucosamine, gluconasturtiin, and neoglucobrassin were the most abundant GLS in the extracts from the turnip accessions. Minor forms of GLS include gluconapoleiferin, glucobrassicanap

Genomic and transcriptomic alterations following hybridisation and genome doubling in trigenomic allohexaploid Brassica carinata × Brassica rapa.

Allopolyploidisation is a prominent evolutionary force that involves two major events: interspecific hybridisation and genome doubling. Both events have important functional consequences in shaping the genomic architecture of the neo-allopolyploids. The respective effects of hybridisation and genome doubling upon genomic and transcriptomic changes in Brassica allopolyploids are unresolved. In this study, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism (MSAP) and cDNA-AFLP approaches were used to track genetic, epigenetic and transcriptional chang

Atmospheric H2S and SO2 as sulfur source for Brassica juncea and Brassica rapa: impact on the glucosinolate composition.

The impact of sulfate deprivation and atmospheric H2S and SO2 nutrition on the content and composition of glucosinolates was studied in Brassica juncea and B. rapa. Both species contained a number of aliphatic, aromatic and indolic glucosinolates. The total glucosinolate content was more than 5.5-fold higher in B. juncea than in B. rapa, which could solely be attributed to the presence of high levels of sinigrin, which was absent in the latter species. Sulfate deprivation resulted in a strong decrease in the content and an altered composition of the glucosinolates of both species. Despite the

Impacts of Whole-Genome Triplication on MIRNA Evolution in Brassica rapa.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short non-coding, endogenous RNAs that play essential roles in eukaryotes. Although the influence of whole-genome triplication (WGT) on protein-coding genes has been well documented in Brassica rapa, little is known about its impacts on MIRNAs. In this study, through generating a comprehensive annotation of 680 MIRNAs for B. rapa, we analyzed the evolutionary characteristics of these MIRNAs from different aspects in B. rapa. First, while MIRNAs and genes show similar patterns of biased distribution among subgenomes of B. rapa, we found that MIRNAs are much mor

Hepatogenous photosensitisation in cows grazing turnips (Brassica rapa) in South Africa.

Holstein cows on a farm in the Humansdorp district, Eastern Cape province, South Africa, developed reddened, painful teat skin 3 days after grazing a mixed forage crop dominated by bulb turnip (Brassica rapa, Barkant cultivar). The crop was grazed 45 days after planting and 10% of the herd developed symptoms. More characteristic non-pigmented skin lesions started manifesting 1-2 days after the appearance of the teat lesions. Affected cows had elevated serum activities of gamma-glutamyl transferase, glutamate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase. These blood chemistry findings confirmed

Do native and invasive herbivores have an effect on Brassica rapa pollination?

Mutualistic (e.g. pollination) and antagonistic (e.g. herbivory) plant-insect interactions shape levels of plant fitness and can have interactive effects. By using experimental plots of Brassica rapa plants infested with generalist (Mamestra brassicae) and specialised (Pieris brassicae) native herbivores and with a generalist invasive (Spodoptera littoralis) herbivore, we estimated both pollen movement among treatments and the visiting behaviour of honeybees versus other wild pollinators. Overall, we found that herbivory has weak effects on plant pollen export, either in terms of inter-treatme

The Expanded SWEET Gene Family Following Whole Genome Triplication in Brassica rapa.

The SWEET family, which includes transcripts of a cohort of plant hexose and sucrose transporters, is considered key to improving crop stress tolerance and yield through its role in manipulating the carbohydrate partitioning process. The functions and regulatory roles of this gene family are variable among different species; thus, to determine these roles, more species-specific information is needed. Brassica rapa displays complicated regulation after a whole-genome triplication (WGT) event, which provides enormous advantages for use in genetic studies, thus it is an ideal model for exploring

BrCWM Mutation Disrupted Leaf Flattening in Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis).

Leaf flattening plays a vital role in the establishment of plant architecture, which is closely related to plant photosynthesis and, thus, influences the product yield and quality of Chinese cabbage. In this study, we used the doubled haploid line 'FT' of Chinese cabbage as the wild type for ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis and obtained a mutant cwm with stably inherited compact and wrinkled leaves. Genetic analysis revealed that the mutated trait was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene, Brcwm. Brcwm was preliminarily mapped to chromosome A07 based on bulked segregant RNA seq

Eugenol Confers Cadmium Tolerance via Intensifying Endogenous Hydrogen Sulfide Signaling in Brassica rapa.

Eugenol, a plant-derived small compound, shows great medicinal potential. However, whether and how eugenol regulates crop physiology remains elusive. Here we reported that eugenol induced Cd (cadmium) tolerance in the root of Brassica rapa. Roots were treated with eugenol and CdCl2 simultaneously (eugenol + Cd) or pretreated with eugenol followed by CdCl2 treatment (eugenol → Cd). Eugenol significantly attenuated Cd-induced growth inhibition, ROS accumulation, oxidative injury, and cell death, which were confirmed by in vivo histochemical analysis. Eugenol remarkably decreased free Cd2+ accumu

Paralog diversification masks conserved diel regulatory programs during cold acclimation in Brassica rapa.

Plant stress responses occur within daily cycles of physiology, metabolism, and growth, making timing a critical dimension of acclimation. In Arabidopsis, circadian and diel regulation influence responses to abiotic stress, including cold, but how this temporal regulation is conserved, diversified, or expanded in crop genomes remains unclear. This question is especially challenging in Brassica rapa, which underwent a genome triplication after diverging from Arabidopsis, resulting in multiple retained paralogs that can be grouped by Arabidopsis orthology and ancient homeologous relationships. Could nitrile derivatives of turnip (Brassica rapa) glucosinolates be hepato- or cholangiotoxic in cattle?

Turnip (Brassica rapa ssp. rapa) and rape (Brassica napus ssp. biennis) and other brassica forage crops are regarded as "safe" feed for cattle during late summer and fall in the North Island of New Zealand when high Pithomyces chartarum spore counts in pastures frequently lead to sporidesmin toxicity (facial eczema). Sporadic acute severe cases of turnip photosensitization in dairy cows characteristically exhibit high γ-glutamyl transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase serum enzyme activities that mimic those seen in facial eczema. The two diseases can, however, be distinguished by histopatholo

Structural characteristics of Brassica rapa L. Polysaccharide and its bioactivity on alcoholic liver injury.

The global prevalence of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has shown a concerning upward trend, with an increasing incidence among younger demographics. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction was employed to isolate polysaccharides from Brassica rapa L (BRL). The purified polysaccharide (BRLPP) was structurally characterized, and its protective effects against alcoholic liver disease (ALD) were investigated. The optimal conditions, material-to-liquid ratio of 1:30 and 200 W ultrasonication for 3 h, yielded 6.90 % ± 0.39 % BRLP. Subsequent structural analysis revealed that BRLPP had an avera
