Early studies reported a 4- to 6-fold risk of breast cancer between women with extremely dense and fatty breasts. As most early studies were case-control studies, we took advantage of a population-based screening program to study density and breast cancer incidence in a cohort design. In the Capital Region, Denmark, women aged 50 to 69 are invited to screening biennially. Women screened November 2012 to December 2017 were included, and classified by BI-RADS density code, version 4, at first screen after recruitment. Women were followed up for incident breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Mammographic density is an important risk factor for breast cancer, but translation to the clinic requires assurance that prior work based on mammography is applicable to current technologies. The purpose of this work is to evaluate whether a calibration methodology developed previously produces breast density metrics predictive of breast cancer risk when applied to a case-control study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A matched case control study (n = 319 pairs) was used to evaluate two calibrated measures of breast density. Two-dimensional mammograms were acquired from six

PURPOSE: To examine the discrepancy in breast density assessments by radiologists, LIBRA software, and AI algorithm and their association with breast cancer risk.
METHODS: Among 74,610 Korean women aged ≥ 34 years, who underwent screening mammography, density estimates obtained from both LIBRA and the AI algorithm were compared to radiologists using BI-RADS density categories (A-D, designating C and D as dense breasts). The breast cancer risks were compared according to concordant or discordant dense breasts identified by radiologists, LIBRA, and AI. Cox-proportional hazards models were used

BACKGROUND: To examine the associations among the smoking status, breast density, changes in breast density, and subsequent breast cancer (BC) risk.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study of 4.7 million cancer-free women aged ≥40 years who participated in the Korean National Breast Cancer Screening Program from 2009 to 2010. Of them, 4.2 million cancer-free women with the subsequent screening during 2011-2016 were included for changes in breast density. Breast density was assessed using BI-RADS categories, and changes were evaluated among women with repeated screenin

Breast density is a strong risk factor for breast cancer. In this paper, we present an automated approach for breast density segmentation in mammographic images based on a supervised pixel-based classification and using textural and morphological features. The objective of the paper is not only to show the feasibility of an automatic algorithm for breast density segmentation but also to prove its potential application to the study of breast density evolution in longitudinal studies. The database used here contains three complete screening examinations, acquired 2 years apart, of 130 different

OBJECTIVE: To compare automated volumetric breast density measurement (VBDM) with radiologists' evaluations based on the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS), and to identify the factors associated with technical failure of VBDM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 1129 women aged 19-82 years who underwent mammography from December 2011 to January 2012 were included. Breast density evaluations by radiologists based on BI-RADS and by VBDM (Volpara Version 1.5.1) were compared. The agreement in interpreting breast density between radiologists and VBDM was determined based on fou

The primary modality for breast cancer screening is mammography. Recent investigations, however, have indicated that an insufficient number of life-threatening cases have been detected by mammography while mammography can often results in a large number of overdiagnoses. To make breast cancer screening more effective, potential factors that influence screening efficacy need to be elucidated. Breast density is one of limiting factors for breast cancer detection using mammography. In this article, influence of breast density on breast screening is explained. Current topics related to breast dens

PURPOSE: There are conflicting reports on the associations of education with mammographic breast density (MBD). To address this, we investigated the associations of education with MBD and additionally determined if and to what extent this association is mediated by known confounders such as age and adiposity.
METHODS: Women (n = 1155) were recruited during their annual screening mammogram at the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. We assessed MBD using volumetric percent density (VPD; Volpara 1.5; Volpara Health®). We performed gene

Mammographic features influence breast cancer risk and are used in risk prediction models. Understanding how genetics influence mammographic features is important because the mechanisms through which they are associated with breast cancer are not well known. Here, using mammographic screening history and detailed questionnaire data from 56,820 women from the KARMA prospective cohort study, we investigated the association between a genetic predisposition to breast cancer and mammographic features among women with a family history of breast cancer (N = 49,674) and a polygenic risk score (PRS, N

OBJECTIVE. Our previous work showed that variation measures, which represent breast architecture derived from mammograms, were significantly associated with breast cancer. For replication purposes, we examined the association of three variation measures (variation [V], which is measured in the image domain, and P1 and p1 [a normalized version of P1], which are derived from restricted regions in the Fourier domain) with breast cancer risk in an independent population. We also compared these measures to volumetric density measures (volumetric percent density [VPD] and dense volume [DV]) from a c

BACKGROUND: Mammographic breast density (MBD) and benign breast disease (BBD) are two of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. Understanding trends in MBD by age and parity in women with BBD is essential to the clinical management and prevention of breast cancer.
METHODS: Using data from the Early Determinants of Mammographic Density (EDMD) study, a prospective follow-up study of women born in 1959-1967, we evaluated MBD in 676 women. We used linear regression with generalized estimating equations to examine associations between self-reported BBD and MBD (percent density, dense area,

INTRODUCTION: Inconclusive data exist on the association between breast density and breast cancer characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a case-only study on 667 invasive breast cancers, using data from the Piedmont Cancer Registry. We applied a multivariate logistic regression model to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of high breast density (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System, BI-RADS 3-4) versus low (BI-RADS 1-2) in relation to histologic grade, pathological tumour size and lymph node status, histotype, estrogen and progeste

The approach to breast cancer screening has changed over time from a general approach to a more personalized, risk-based approach. Women with dense breasts, one of the most prevalent risk factors, are now being informed that they are at increased risk of developing breast cancer and should consider supplemental screening beyond mammography. This article reviews the current evidence regarding the impact of breast density relative to other known risk factors, the evidence regarding supplemental screening for women with dense breasts, supplemental screening options, and recommendations for physic

The association between mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk may be the result of genetic and/or environmental factors that determine breast density. We reasoned that if the genetic factors that underlie breast density increase breast cancer risk, then breast density should be associated with family history of breast cancer. Therefore, we determined the association between mammographic density and family history of breast cancer among women in the San Francisco Mammography Registry. Mammographic density was classified using the four BI-RADS criteria: 1 = almost entirely fatty, 2

OBJECTIVES: Assessing the combined effect of mammographic density and benign breast disease is of utmost importance to design personalized screening strategies.
METHODS: We analyzed individual-level data from 294,943 women aged 50-69 years with at least one mammographic screening participation in any of four areas of the Spanish Breast Cancer Screening Program from 1995 to 2015, and followed up until 2017. We used partly conditional Cox models to assess the association between benign breast disease, breast density, and the risk of breast cancer.
RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 8.0 year

Breast density refers to the amount of fibroglandular tissue relative to fat on mammography and is determined either qualitatively through visual assessment or quantitatively. It is a heritable and dynamic trait associated with age, race/ethnicity, body mass index, and hormonal factors. Increased breast density has important clinical implications including the potential to mask malignancy and as an independent risk factor for the development of breast cancer. Breast density has been incorporated into breast cancer risk models. Given the impact of dense breasts on the interpretation of mammogra
