This article aims to provide recommendations on breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), caused by textured breast implants. These recommendations are based on both updated data from the literature and the experience gained in the management and treatment of patients by the French-speaking Adult Lymphoma Study Group, Lymphoma Study Association (LYSA), regarding BIA-ALCL. Studies indexed in PubMed, focusing on breast surgery and breast implant-associated lymphoma, published between 2006 and 2024, were included. The most relevant articles were analyzed to synthesize r

Although silicone breast implants have been linked to various short-term complications, less is known about their long-range effects. Most attention has focused on connective tissue disorders, but the range of immunologic disturbances observed in women with implants suggests that consideration also be given to other chronic diseases, including cancer. The greatest attention has focused on breast cancer, given clinical reports suggesting an association and observations that mammographic visualization is deterred by implants. Findings from epidemiologic studies, however, actually suggest that br

Infection is the leading cause of morbidity that occurs after breast implantation and complicates 2.0-2.5% of interventions in most case series. Two-thirds of infections develop within the acute post-operative period, whereas some infections may develop years or even decades after surgery. Infection rates are higher after breast reconstruction and subsequent implantation than after breast augmentation. Risk factors for infection associated with breast implantation have not been carefully assessed in prospective studies with long-term follow-up. Surgical technique and the patient's underlying c

Questions as to the bioreactivity of silicone breast implants (SBIs) have recently been intensely scrutinized, most notably by the media and legal system. Pathologists must be aware of the controversy and treat each SBI and associated tissue as a potential lawsuit. Grossly, silicone is a clear, viscous substance that may be observed either within or extruding from a silastic bag. By light microscopy, silicone is a nonstainable, nonpolarizable, refractile substance. Thicker sections, especially when viewed by non-Köhler illumination, phase-contrast, and darkfield microscopy will enhance visuali

Infection following breast implants is an uncommon event. This is somewhat surprising, since the human breast is not a sterile anatomical structure. The flora found in the breast are derived from the nipple ducts and closely resemble those of normal skin. These organisms, predominantly S. epidermidis, may in some cases be responsible for firmness secondary to capsular contracture. Treatment of the periprosthetic infection usually involves implant removal, but salvage by systemic antibiotics is sometimes possible. Atypical mycobacteria are very rarely the cause of infection, but can be extremel

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Empirical data suggest that women submitted to silicone breast implant surgery report bloating after intervention. We aimed to look to this phenomenon in a retrospective study.
METHODS: An online ad-hoc survey was created. It included 22 items aiming to collect essential biographical data and occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms after esthetic surgery. Subjects invited to fill the questionnaire were people from a data base of a busy esthetic clinic. Respondents were included in two groups: one group with breast implant surgery and a control group with other intervention

For patients who undergo mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer, the restoration of a normal breast form through breast reconstruction is important to body image and quality of life. Implant-based reconstruction has the capability of producing excellent results in the well selected patient. In addition, compared with autogenous tissue reconstruction, implant reconstruction offers a shorter operative procedure with a quicker convalescence and no donor site morbidity. Reconstruction options for implant-based reconstruction include: single-stage reconstruction with a standard or adjustable

OBJECTIVE: Since the first use of silicone implants by Cronin in 1962, there have been several attempts to introduce alternative filling materials for breast implants on the market. A promising new development are lightweight implants, whose filler material is one third lighter than conventional silicone gel. While these implants have been used primarily for aesthetic augmentation, a benefit could be expected particularly in post-mastectomy reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Since 2019, 92 operations using lightweight implants have been performed at our clinic, 61 of them for breast recon

BACKGROUND: Implant-based breast reconstruction is being performed more frequently, and implants are associated with an increased risk of infection. We reviewed the clinical features of cases of implant infection and investigated the risk factors for breast device salvage failure.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 771 patients who underwent implant-based breast reconstruction between January 2010 and December 2016. Age, body mass index, chemotherapy history, radiation exposure, and smoking history were assessed as potential risk factors for postoperative infection. We also evaluated the pr

OBJECTIVE: To examine possible relationships among fibromyalgia (FM, American College of Rheumatology 1990 criteria), hypermobility, and breast implants.
METHODS: The medical records of 2,500 female patients (ages 25-65) who had been seen for the first time in a rheumatology practice in Atlanta, GA, during 1986-92 were abstracted and analyzed. In each analysis, patients whose records indicated that the patient met the full case criteria were compared with patients whose records had no indication of the disease. Patients whose medical records indicated the clinical onset of FM prior to breast

Silicone gel-filled breast implants have been employed clinically for decades for aesthetic augmentation or postmastectomy reconstruction. Most patients and surgeons attest to the efficacy and safety of these devices. However, more recently in the medical literature and popular media, silicone gel-filled breast implants have been claimed to incite an array of clinical sequelae such as capsular formation, granulomatous disease, arthritis, arthralgia, fibromyalgia, autoimmune collagen vascular disease, human adjuvant disease, siliconosis, silicone-related disease, and silicone implant-associated

Current implants for breast augmentation containing silicone gel, saline, or both are radiopaque on mammographic examination and can totally obscure microcalcifications and soft-tissue masses. The effect of these implants on the detection of early breast cancers in patients who have undergone augmentation mammaplasty remains unproven and controversial. Implants filled with medium-chain triglycerides (peanut oil) are radiolucent on mammographic examination and allow visualization of both soft-tissue masses and microcalcifications. To investigate the biocompatibility of radiolucent implants, 10

BACKGROUND: "Breast implant illness" (BII) is a constellation of non-specific constitutional, rheumatologic, mental, and cognitive symptoms reported increasingly by women carrying silicone breast implants (SBIs). The impact of BII on the well-being of breast cancer patients with SBI-based breast reconstructions is a subject of debate.
METHODS: In a multicenter cohort of breast cancer survivors (n = 9590) treated between 2000 and 2015 in 6 major regional hospitals in the Netherlands, we performed a health survey (response rate 64.7%). The presence of 18 BII-associated symptoms was compared bet

Approximately 1.5 million women in the United States currently have breast implants. The majority were placed for cosmetic augmentation, but 20% were placed for reconstruction after the loss or deformity of a breast. The augmented breast is a challenge to the mammographer. Many of the palpable and mammographically detected abnormalities in these patients are related to the implant itself. Since, however, there is breast tissue present with cosmetic augmentation, the full range of fibrocystic and neoplastic conditions that can affect the breast may be seen. The presence of the implant makes ima

Background: The voluntary recall and ban of several textured breast implant models worldwide, secondary to their association with Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, has limited the key benefit of a textured surface─positional stability. We have engineered a Positionally Stable Smooth Implant (PSSI) containing millimeter-scaled cylindrical wells on the implant surface for capsule ingrowth and device stabilization. Objectives: To evaluate the long-term positional stability of PSSI designs in vivo and characterize capsule formation. Methods: Miniature breast implants were m

Silicone breast implants have been marketed in the United States since 1963. Questions remain unanswered on the safety of these medical devices despite their popularity and availability. In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration restricted the availability of silicone-gel breast implants to women requiring them for reconstruction after breast cancer or for other medical indications. Inflatable saline breast implants have remained available for either reconstruction or for cosmetic augmentation while manufacturers completed studies addressing issues of safety and effectiveness. The Food and Dru

In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration requested a voluntary moratorium on the scale and implantation of silicone-gel-filled breast implants because of growing concern over the lack of scientific and clinical data supporting their safety and effectiveness. Breast implants had been reported to cause serious local complications, and new questions about breast implants and increased risk for autoimmune disease, including the rare but sometimes fatal connective tissue disease scleroderma, were also raised. Since that time, clinical studies have focused on the adjuvant effect of silicone and of

OBJECTIVE: To define neurologic problems that may occur in women with silicone breast implants.
BACKGROUND: The association between silicone breast implants (SBIs) and certain rheumatologic disorders has been discussed since the 1980s. Recent uncontrolled case series have reported neurologic problems believed to be associated with SBIs.
DESIGN: Case series based on a retrospective data analysis of medical records from 131 women diagnosed as having a neurologic problem related to SBIs.
METHODS: Data extracted from the medical records and analyzed included neurologic symptoms, neurologic exam
