Comparative genomic hybridization analysis of benign and invasive male breast neoplasms.

Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) analysis was performed for the identification of chromosomal imbalances in two benign gynecomastias and one malignant breast carcinoma derived from patients with male breast disease and compared with cytogenetic analysis in two of the three cases. CGH analysis demonstrated overrepresentation of 8q in all three cases. One case of gynecomastia presented gain of 1p34.3 through pter, 11p14 through q12, and 17p11.2 through qter, and loss of 1q41 through qter and 4q33 through qter. The other gynecomastia presented del(1)(q41) as detected by both cytogenetic an

The male breast and malignant neoplasms. Diagnosis by aspiration biopsy cytology.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy is now an established procedure for the evaluation of breast masses in women. On the other hand, there are only occasional reports of aspirates from male breast masses. During the past 19 years from more than 14,000 mammary aspirates, the authors examined the aspiration biopsy cytology (ABC) from 14 cases of malignant mammary tumors in men. There were ten infiltrating ductal carcinomas, one mucinous carcinoma, two metastatic carcinomas, and one leiomyosarcoma. The cytologic and clinicopathologic feature of these cases are presented. Because these specimens can be

Multiple Primary Malignant Neoplasms: A Case Report of Breast Mucinous Carcinoma and Extramammary Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma in a Male Patient.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms refer to two or more malignancies in an individual that are not related. We report a case of a 78-year-old male with concurrent breast mucinous carcinoma and extramammary lymphoma. The patient initially presented with palpable masses in the left breast and the right groin, which were pathologically confirmed after a surgical biopsy as breast mucinous carcinoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, respectively. He underwent whole-body 18-fluorine deoxyglucose PET/CT before surgery, and an enhancing nodular lesion in the left lingual tonsil was found incidental

Second primary malignancies in patients with male breast cancer.

An international multicentre study of first and second primary neoplasms associated with male breast cancer was carried out by pooling data from 13 cancer registries. Among a total of 3409 men with primary breast cancer, 426 (12.5%) developed a second neoplasia; other than breast cancer, a 34% overall excess risk of second primary neoplasia, affecting the small intestine (standardised incidence ratio, 4.95, 95% confidence interval, 1.35-12.7), rectum (1.78, 1.20-2.54), pancreas (1.93, 1.14-3.05), skin (nonmelanoma, 1.65, 1.16-2.29), prostate (1.61, 1.34-1.93) and lymphohaematopoietic system (1

Papillary carcinoma of the male breast: report of a case.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the male breast represents an extremely rare entity that accounts for less than 1% of all malignancies, and histologically may range from papillary hyperplasia in gynecomastia to invasive papillary carcinoma. This report presents the case of a 61-year-old Caucasian man who presented with a 5-year history of a centrally located painless swelling of his right breast with occasional nipple discharge. Triple assessment was very helpful in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment included a mastectomy and hormonal therapy because the neoplasm expressed hormone recept

Male breast cancer: 6-year experience.

AIM: Breast cancer in men is a very rare neoplasm accounting 1% of all breast cancer with an incidence ratio of 1:100 of men to women and about 1% of all malignancies in men. On the basis of the literature review the authors tried to determine the main characteristics of this rare neoplasm in terms of epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and survival. METHODS: The authors report the experience of the Breast Unit of the San Giovanni Addolorata Hospital in Rome, where 4 cases of male breast cancer were observed and treated over 784 breast cancers. RESULTS: All tumours were ductal carc

Pure mucinous carcinoma with axillary lymph node metastasis in a male breast.

Pure mucinous carcinoma of the male breast is an extremely uncommon malignant breast neoplasm and usually occurs at advanced age. It is characterized by a higher degree of mucus production, a more benign behavior, a lower incidence of metastatic nodal involvement, and a subsequent higher survival rate. We describe such a case of a 59-year-old male, who displayed a gradually growing retroareolar tumor of the right breast. The tumor was well demarcated and had a soft consistency with a gelatinous appearance. Based on the preoperative clinical identification of right axillary lymphadenopathy, the

Epidermoid Cyst in Male Patient Mimicking a Suspicious Breast Mass and Consequences of Biopsy.

Male patients presenting to the mammography department for workup of breast disease is an overall rare event compared to females. Gynecomastia is statistically the most common breast condition afflicting male patients, with ductal carcinoma an uncommon secondary diagnostic consideration. Secondary benign breast conditions or mimickers of breast disease in men are even rarer than primary carcinoma and can pose a significant challenge in breast imaging workups. We present a challenging workup of a superficial epidermoid cyst (EC) in a male patient with significant subcutaneous growth and indeter

Synchronous bilateral invasive lobular breast cancer presenting as carcinomatosis in a male.

Invasive lobular breast carcinoma is an exceedingly rare neoplasm in men, representing a very small percentage of all male breast cancers. However, it should remain on the differential diagnosis in a patient with metastatic carcinoma of unknown origin. We report a case of a 58-year-old man who presented with increasing abdominal girth and weight loss. A peritoneal biopsy revealed a malignant epithelial neoplastic process focally arranged in a single-file pattern. There was immunohistochemical reactivity for cytokeratin AE1/AE3. E-cadherin, cytokeratin 5/6, prostatic-specific antigen, and leuko

Pilomatrixoma of the adult male breast: a rare tumor with typical ultrasound features.

Pilomatrixomas are uncommon benign skin neoplasms arising from the hair follicle matrix. They occur more commonly in children than adults. Most originate on the head, neck, or upper extremities, less commonly on the trunk or lower extremities, and very infrequently in the breast. We present a rare case of pilomatrixoma of the breast in an adult male. As the patient had a strong family history of breast cancer, a full work-up of the breast mass was performed. Ultimately, an excisional biopsy was carried out for patient reassurance.

Familial male breast cancer.

Infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast occurred in a total of six men from two families. In one family specimens from three men who had prophylactic mastectomies revealed focal intraductal hyperplasia, suggesting a familial tendency toward proliferation of mammary-duct epithelium. In the other family, benign and malignant breast lesions also developed in several women. Preliminary data suggest elevated urinary oestrogen excretion in three men from these families, implicating a defect in oestrogen production or metabolism in the pathogenesis of male breast neoplasms.

Male breast disease: pictorial review with radiologic-pathologic correlation.

The male breast is susceptible to many of the same pathologic processes as the female breast. Many of these conditions have mammographic, ultrasonographic (US), and magnetic resonance imaging findings that allow differentiation between clearly benign conditions and those that require biopsy. Gynecomastia is the most common abnormality of the male breast and has characteristic imaging features that usually allow differentiation from malignancy. Mammography is the initial imaging modality for a clinically suspicious mass. A palpable mass that is occult or incompletely imaged at mammography manda

Fine needle aspiration of secretory breast carcinoma resembling lactational changes. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The cytologic features of secretory breast carcinoma were first described as recently as 1986. Only one other report of fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of secretory breast carcinoma in a male has been published, in 1994. CASE: A 33-year-old male with a unilateral breast mass present for at least 10 years underwent FNA aspiration biopsy, excisional biopsy and mastectomy. FNA cytology findings demonstrated marked overlap with features described as characteristic of lactation changes. CONCLUSION: Secretory breast carcinoma is a rare, usually well differentiated neoplasm that

[Gynecomastia in males : Diagnostics and treatment].

Gynecomastia can be the expression of physiological processes and be temporary in nature (pubertal gynecomastia) but can also occur at any other age. It is therefore a common illness and, depending on the severity of the symptoms, can mean a great deal of psychological stress for the patient. Enlargement of the male breast is usually a benign finding; causes can be endocrine disorders, previously undetected systemic diseases or drug side effects. Male breast cancer in particular is a rare but important differential diagnosis. The diagnostic evaluation therefore aims at an endocrine clarificati

Solitary fibrous tumor of male breast: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms which can arise in any anatomical location. Pleural SFTs have been most frequently documented; however, breast SFT is an exceedingly rare entity and seldom present in male breast, with only 8 previously reported cases. Recently, STAT6 immunostaining was considered to be a definitive marker of SFT, however, no case of the male breast SFT showing STAT6 positivity preoperatively has been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a case of breast SFT in a 73-year-old male patient with a 12-month history of a palpable br

Original Research: Men's awareness and knowledge of male breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This article reports on the findings of a qualitative study that explored the awareness and knowledge of male breast cancer among English-speaking men. The primary goal was to elicit information to guide both clinical practice and the development of gender-specific educational interventions. METHODS: Interviews with 28 adult men, all of whom had no history of breast cancer themselves but had at least one maternal blood relative with the disease, were conducted and analyzed, using qualitative methods, to describe participants' awareness of male breast cancer, their knowledge of the

Case report: Unraveling a unique case of male occult breast cancer with axillary intricacies and a comprehensive literature dive.

Male breast cancer is a rare neoplasm, accounting for approximately 1% of all breast cancer cases. It typically presents as a painless, retroareolar mass. An exceedingly rare variant is male occult breast cancer, which is primarily characterized by axillary lymph node enlargement without an identifiable primary breast tumor. We report an intriguing case of a septuagenarian patient diagnosed with male occult breast cancer. The patient presented with both axillary lymph node enlargement and an associated axillary skin ulcer, and was subsequently diagnosed with male occult breast cancer with meta

Bladder cancer in cancer patients: population-based estimates from a large Swedish study.

BACKGROUND: This study quantified the risk of urinary bladder neoplasms in cancer patients taking into account the age at first diagnosis, the gender of the patients and the lead time between diagnoses. METHODS: We used standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) to compare the incidence of bladder tumours in 967 767 cancer patients with the incidence rate in the general Swedish population. A total of 3324 male and 1560 female patients developed bladder tumours at least 1 year after first cancer diagnosis. RESULTS: After bladder and renal pelvis cancers, the SIRs of bladder neoplasms were higher in
