Canine breeding management.

A prebreeding examination should be performed on animals of both sexes to ensure their optimal health at the time of breeding. At this time, the medical and reproductive histories should be reviewed to detect potential negative influences upon the reproductive tract. Serologic testing for canine brucellosis should be performed to detect and remove infected animals from the breeding program. Examination of the female reproductive tract may be limited to the caudal vagina, vestibule, and vulva. Defects that cause pain and reluctance to breed may be detected with thorough digital and visual inspe

Multi-Omics Integration Drives Precision Breeding in Sorghum: Molecular Dissection and Breeding Practice.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.), the fifth-most important cereal crop globally, serves as a cornerstone crop for food security, forage production, and bioenergy feedstock on arid and semi-arid marginal lands, owing to its high water use efficiency derived from C4 photosynthesis and exceptional tolerance to abiotic stresses. Conventional sorghum breeding has long been constrained by insufficient genetic dissection of complex traits, the "black box" of genotype-to-phenotype mapping, and poorly understood genotype-by-environment interactions, resulting in stagnant genetic gain. In recent years, rapi

Breeding jassid-resistant okra (Abelmoschus esculentus): from morpho-biochemical traits to precision breeding.

Okra, an economically important vegetable in tropical and subtropical regions, faces severe yield constraints due to sap-sucking pests, particularly jassids (Amrasca spp.). These insects cause hopper burn, leaf curling, and chlorosis, leading to estimated yield losses of 30-100% under severe infestation. Farmers' heavy reliance on chemical control to manage these insects poses environmental, economic, and health risks, underscoring the need for host-plant resistance as a sustainable component of integrated pest management. Successful breeding for jassid resistance requires in-depth knowledge o

Uncertainty-aware breeding decisions: MCMC-based optimum contribution selection increases breeding decision robustness.

Optimum contribution selection (OCS) balances genetic gain and inbreeding by optimizing parental contributions to the next generation, but current implementations rely on point estimates of breeding values that discard the uncertainty inherent in genetic evaluations. We introduce CVaR-OCS, a novel formulation that incorporates the full posterior distribution of estimated breeding values (EBVs) directly into the OCS objective via Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) (a coherent risk measure from financial portfolio theory) allowing a single optimization to simultaneously maximize expected genetic g

Sheep breeding schemes utilising artificial insemination; large-scale simulation with a complex breeding goal.

Alternative Norwegian sheep breeding schemes were evaluated by stochastic simulation of a breeding population with about 120 000 ewes, considering the gain for an aggregate genotype including nine traits and also the rate of inbreeding. The schemes were: a scheme where both young unproven rams (test rams) and proven rams (elite rams) are used in artificial insemination (AI scheme), a scheme with test rams in natural mating in ram circles and elite rams (from one and a half years of age) in AI across all flocks in the country (NMAI2 scheme), a scheme where, in addition to testing rams, the youn

Metabolomic profile of dromedary camel follicular fluid during the breeding and non-breeding seasons.

Understanding the metabolic profile within the follicular microenvironment is crucial for optimizing reproductive efficiency in camels. In this study, we examined the metabolomic profile of camel follicular fluid (FF) during the breeding (n = 10) and non-breeding seasons (n = 10). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was utilized to describe the metabolites present in follicular fluid samples. The results found considerable differences in the metabolomics profiles between the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Hexadecenoic acid, galactose and glucose levels were significantly (P < 0.05

To breed or not to breed: endocrine response to mercury contamination by an Arctic seabird.

Mercury, a ubiquitous toxic element, is known to alter expression of sex steroids and to impair reproduction across vertebrates but the mechanisms underlying these effects are not clearly identified. We examined whether contamination by mercury predicts the probability to skip reproduction in black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) from Svalbard. We also manipulated the endocrine system to investigate the mechanism underlying this relationship. During the pre-laying period, we injected exogenous GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) to test the ability of the pituitary to release luteinizin

"Boldness" in the domestic dog differs among breeds and breed groups.

"Boldness" in dogs is believed to be one end of the shy-bold axis, representing a super-trait. Several personality traits fall under the influence of this super-trait. Previous studies on boldness in dogs have found differences among breeds, but grouping breeds on the basis of behavioural similarities has been elusive. This study investigated differences in the expression of boldness among dog breeds, kennel club breed groups, and sub-groups of kennel club breed groups by way of a survey on dog personality circulated among Australian dog-training clubs and internet forums and lists. Breed had

Breed Composition and Heterozygosity in Brangus and Braford Composite Cattle Breeds.

Composite cattle breeds are developed to combine favorable traits from parental populations and to exploit heterosis across diverse production environments. However, their genomic structure becomes progressively more complex across generations, and it remains unclear to what extent patterns of local ancestry and heterozygosity are conserved across breeds. The objective of this study was to characterize genomic breed composition in Argentine Brangus and Braford at both global and local levels, and to identify shared genomic segments with extreme values of indicine ancestry and heterozygosity. Hip dysplasia and dog breeding.

Hip dysplasia is considered to be one of the most serious problems in dog breeding. In the past 20 years the studies of, and the attempts to control, this condition have been directed mainly to the overall picture of the abnormality of the hips. The various efforts have resulted in a decrease in the incidence of HD in several breeds of dogs. For other breeds the results have not been very convincing, however. In some instances they are even said to be conflicting with other aims of breeding. Based on these data some separate studies have recently been performed in respect of the details of the

Breeding-induced endometritis in mares.

Endometritis is a common cause of infertility in broodmares. In the past, the condition was believed to be exclusively the result of bacterial contamination of the uterus. Treatment strategies were focused on preventing bacteria from entering the uterus and on treating mares with signs of endometritis with antibiotics. More recent research on uterine defense mechanisms has increased our understanding of the pathophysiology of equine endometritis. Additional causative agents have been identified, and we have learned to separate uterine infections and a physiologic breeding-induced endometritis

Breeding healthier dogs in Sweden.

Preventive measures in small animal veterinary medicine include not only deworming, feeding and vaccination but also selection of breeding stock with reference to health and longevity. Good cooperation between the veterinary profession and the Swedish Kennel Club in the examination of breeding stock is described. Successful eradication programs against Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Arthroses and Hereditary Eye Defects are chosen as examples of what has been achieved so far. Less extensive and newer programs against Hemophilia A and Progressive Nephropathy are described as well as a recently instituted

Dairy Cattle Breeding Simulation Program: a simulation program to teach animal breeding principles and practices.

A dairy cattle breeding simulation program (DCBSP v.4.9) has been developed to teach undergraduate and graduate students animal breeding principles associated with selection for multiple traits in dairy cattle. The current version of the program was written in FORTRAN 90, and a web-based interface was developed for the students to interact with the program in the teaching environment. This software simulates a population of dairy cattle herds and artificial insemination bulls through several generations by integrating students' decisions about mating, culling, and selection of new heifers and

Breeding without Mendelism: theory and practice of dairy cattle breeding in the Netherlands 1900-1950.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Dutch scientists became increasingly critical of the practices of commercial dairy cattle breeders. Milk yields had hardly increased for decades, and the scientists believed this to be due to the fact that breeders still judged the hereditary potential of their animals on the basis of outward characteristics. An objective verdict on the qualities of breeding stock could only be obtained by progeny testing, the scientists contended: the best animals were those that produced the most productive offspring. Some scientists had been making this claim since the beginning of t

Kansas beef bulls with chronic anaplasmosis demonstrate satisfactory breeding soundness outcomes at breeding soundness examination.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of chronic Anaplasma marginale infection in beef bulls from eastern Kansas and compare breeding soundness parameters between A marginale-infected and uninfected bulls. We hypothesized that bulls with chronic anaplasmosis would have inferior breeding soundness exam (BSE) outcomes as a result of persistent A marginale infection or the consequence of initial clinical disease compared to uninfected bulls. ANIMALS: 535 client-owned beef bulls from eastern Kansas undergoing routine BSE. METHODS: Complete BSEs were conducted by

Modelling breeding strategies against genetic defects in a vulnerable cattle breed.

This paper investigates different selection scenarios to reduce the prevalence of a genetic defect in a vulnerable breed, using simulations of selection against gonadal hypoplasia in Swedish Mountain Cattle as a case study. Gonadal hypoplasia (reduced size of ovaries/testes) that leads to reduced fertility has long been a problem in Swedish Mountain cattle (Fjällko). Despite breeding efforts that have reduced the frequency of the defect, it is still present in the breed. There are two translocations involving chromosomes 6 and 29 associated with desired colour phenotypes that segregates in sev

Use of animal breeds and breeding to overcome the incidence of grass tetany: a review.

British breeds of cattle are not so effective as Zebu in extracting nutrients from low-quality roughages, and these breeds differ in their nutrient metabolism and animal physiology. Breeds of cattle may differ in their requirements for Mg. Brahman cows are less susceptible to death from disease and metabolic disorders than are British breeds of cattle, whereas cows with 50% or greater dairy breeding (Holstein and Jersey) are more susceptible than British or Brahman breeds when maintained in beef production herds. Brahman or Brahman crossbred cows are less susceptible than other breeds to metab
