Biosorption and biodegradation of triphenyltin by Brevibacillus brevis.

Triphenyltin (TPT) is an endocrine disruptor highly toxic to non-target organisms, and has contaminated the environment worldwide. To accelerate TPT elimination, the study on the behavior and mechanism of TPT biosorption and biodegradation by Brevibacillus brevis was conducted. The results revealed that TPT and coexisted Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ in solution could be adsorbed effectively by B. brevis, and TPT was further transformed to diphenyltin, monophenyltin and tin intracellularly. The removal efficiency of 0.5 mg L(-1) TPT after degradation by 0.3 g L(-1) biomass for 5d was about 60%. Su

A Case of Brevibacillus brevis Meningitis and Bacteremia.

Brevibacillus species are environmental organisms that are rarely implicated as human pathogens. We present the case of postsurgical Brevibacillus brevis bacterial meningitis and an associated bacteremia after debulking surgery for a newly diagnosed pilocytic astrocytoma in a 19-year-old woman. The patient experienced clinical cure with a 4-week course of vancomycin, but her postinfectious course was complicated by the development of a pseudomeningocele that required surgical repair. To our knowledge, this is the first described case of a central nervous system infection caused by Brevibacillu

Triphenyltin biodegradation and intracellular material release by Brevibacillus brevis.

Triphenyltin (TPT) is an endocrine disruptor that has polluted the global environment, and thus far, information regarding the mechanisms of TPT biodegradation and intracellular material release is limited. Here, TPT biodegradation was conducted by using Brevibacillus brevis. Degradation affecting factors, metabolite formation, ion and protein release, membrane permeability, and cell viability after degradation were investigated to reveal the biodegradation mechanisms. The results showed that TPT could be degraded simultaneously to diphenyltin and monophenyltin, with diphenyltin further degrad

Tea saponin enhanced biodegradation of decabromodiphenyl ether by Brevibacillus brevis.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) is a ubiquitous persistent pollutant and has contaminated the environment worldwide. To accelerate BDE209 elimination and reveal the mechanism concerned, the biosurfactant tea saponin enhanced degradation of BDE209 by Brevibacillus brevis was conducted. The results revealed that tea saponin could efficiently increase the solubility of BDE209 in mineral salts medium and improve its biodegradation. The degradation efficiency of 0.5 mg L(-1) BDE209 by 1 g L(-1) biomass with surfactant was up to 55% within 5d. Contact time was a significant factor for BDE209 biodeg

Solvent tolerance acquired by Brevibacillus brevis during an olive-waste vermicomposting process.

In this work, a cultivable, Gram-positive, solvent-resistant bacterium was isolated from vermicomposted olive wastes (VOW). The highest 16S rRNA sequence similarity (99%) was found in Brevibacillus brevis. The genome of the isolate, selected for trichloroethylene (TCE)-tolerance, contained a nucleotide sequence encoding a conserved protein domain (ACR_tran) ascribable to the HAE1-RND family. Members of this family are hydrophobic/amphiphilic efflux pumps largely restricted to Gram-negative bacteria. No DNA sequences of HAE1 transporters were detected in the genome of a reference B. brevis stra

Classification of Bacillus and Brevibacillus species using rapid analysis of lipids by mass spectrometry.

Bacillus are aerobic spore-forming bacteria that are known to lead to specific diseases, such as anthrax and food poisoning. This study focuses on the characterization of these bacteria by the detection of lipids extracted from 33 well-characterized strains from the Bacillus and Brevibacillus genera, with the aim to discriminate between the different species. For the purpose of analysing the lipids extracted from these bacterial samples, two rapid physicochemical techniques were used: matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and liquid chromat

Use of Brevibacillus choshinensis for the production of biologically active brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family critical for neuronal cell survival and differentiation, with therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurological disorders and spinal cord injuries. The production of recombinant, bioactive BDNF is not practical in most traditional microbial expression systems because of the inability of the host to correctly form the characteristic cystine-knot fold of BDNF. Here, we investigated Brevibacillus choshinensis as a suitable expression host for bioactive BDNF expression, evaluating the effects of medium type (2SY

Enhanced production and organic solvent stability of a protease from Brevibacillus laterosporus strain PAP04.

A bacterial strain (PAP04) isolated from cattle farm soil was shown to produce an extracellular, solvent-stable protease. Sequence analysis using 16S rRNA showed that this strain was highly homologous (99%) to Brevibacillus laterosporus. Growth conditions that optimize protease production in this strain were determined as maltose (carbon source), skim milk (nitrogen source), pH 7.0, 40°C temperature, and 48 h incubation. Overall, conditions were optimized to yield a 5.91-fold higher production of protease compared to standard conditions. Furthermore, the stability of the enzyme in organic solv

Edeine B1 produced by Brevibacillus brevis reduces the virulence of a plant pathogenic fungus by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration.

Plant pathogenic fungi cause serious diseases, which result in the loss of crop yields and reduce the quality of crops worldwide. To counteract the escalating risks of chemical fungicides, interest in biological control agents to manage plant diseases has significantly increased. In this study, we comprehensively screened microbial culture filtrates using a yeast screening system to find microbes exhibiting respiratory inhibition activity. Consequently, we found a soil-borne microbe Brevibacillus brevis HK544 strain exhibiting a respiration inhibitory activity and identified edeine B1 (EB1) fr

Ultrastructural changes in epithelial cells on different stages of sinantropic muscoid dipterans fed with spores of Brevibacillus laterosporus.

Brevibacillus laterosporus is a sporulating bacteria, with typical canoe-shaped parasporal bodies attached to the spores. It has shown great biotechnological potential, including its broad pathogenic spectrum against different orders of insects and other invertebrates with medical-veterinary-sanitary importance. The high degree of synanthropy of muscoid dipterans and the damage they cause being a source of myiasis and carriers of pathogens encourage research into their population control. The objective of the study was to evaluate the histopathological effects caused by B. laterosporus NRS 590
