Brevibacterium species are Gram-positive, non-sporulating, coryneform, aerobic rods that are catalase positive and exhibit a distinctive transition from diptheroid to coccoid morphology during culture. Infections by these species are seldom identified. Objective: This narrative review aims to present all the reported cases of Brevibacterium spp. infections in humans, focusing on data about epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial treatment, and mortality. A narrative review based on a literature search of PubMed/MedLine and Scopus databases was performed. In total, 41 studies prov

Brevibacterium is a large genus that is not often involved in pathogenesis, however, since 1991 there have been several case reports of Brevibacterium-associated illness, most often due to bacteremia in the setting of an immunocompromised patient with a central venous catheter (CVC). Here we detail the case of an elderly woman with many comorbidities and a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line for over four years, who presented with septic shock and Brevibacterium bacteremia. In nearly all previous cases of Brevibacterium bacteremia it was thought to be due to a CVC which was remo

Brevibacterium spp., previously considered nonpathogenic skin commensals, have emerged as opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts with central venous catheters or malignancies. We report a case of Brevibacterium bacteremia in a 47-year-old HIV-positive woman with profound immunosuppression (CD4+ T-cell count of 1 cell/µL) but notably without any indwelling catheter or prosthetic device. The patient presented with syncope and pancytopenia and was ultimately diagnosed with Brevibacterium bacteremia after extensive workup. She was successfully treated with a two-week course of intraven

A scheme is proposed for the branched respiratory chain in Brevibacterium flavum 22 LD. Three branching sites in the main electron transport pathway are suggested: at the initial stage of NADH2 oxidation (before menaquinone) and at the levels of cytochromes b and c. Up to 40% out of the total oxygen is consumed in the NADH2-dependent alternative oxidative pathway in the presence of 5.10(-3) M cyanide or after the near UV treatment. This bypass differs from the main electron flow with a lower P/O ratio. Exogenous NADH2 catalyses the univalent reduction of oxygen through superoxide production in

Brevibacteria able to decrease phosphate concentration in the medium are of interest for the study of the role of bacteria in the phosphorus cycle and for development of biotechnology of phosphate removal from waste. Brevibacterium casei, Brevibacterium linens, and Brevibacterium epidermidis grown in media with initial phosphorus concentrations of 1-11 mM were shown to decrease its concentration by 90%. The composition of the incubation medium required for B. casei to carry out this process was established. This process occurs in the absence of glucose but requires the presence of Mg2+, NH4+,

Peritonitis is an important complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), affecting up to 40% of patients at some point of their PD treatment. Here, we describe a case of PD-associated peritonitis due to an unusual pathogen, Brevibacterium casei. The patient was treated with intraperitoneal antibiotics, successfully preserving the PD catheter. To the best of our knowledge, only four cases of peritonitis due to B. casei have been previously documented worldwide, with catheter preservation achieved in just one other case.

We describe a newborn infant with hydrocephalus and a ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection caused by Brevibacterium casei. Essential for correct diagnosis was rapid species identification by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight, after initial report of coryneform bacteria. The patient responded well to vancomycin and rifampicin for 15 days. The shunt was not removed. Repeated cerebrospinal fluid cultures up to 4 months after therapy remained negative.

The kinetic properties of two cholesterol oxidases, one from Brevibacterium sterolicum (BCO) the other from Streptomyces hygroscopicus (SCO) were investigated. BCO works via a ping-pong mechanism, whereas the catalytic pathway of SCO is sequential. The turnover numbers at infinite cholesterol and oxygen concentrations are 202 s-1 and 105 s-1 for SCO and BCO, respectively. The rates of flavin reduction extrapolated to saturating substrate concentration, under anaerobic conditions, are 235 s-1 for BCO and 232 s-1 for SCO (in the presence of 1% Thesit and 10% 2-propanol). With reduced SCO the rat

The Brevibacterium genus is a group of nonmotile, catalase-positive, and aerobic bacteria that form part of the skin flora. Brevibacterium species are an emerging opportunistic bacteria with an unknown pathogenic potential; hence, further research is needed. Most Brevibacterium bacteremia cases have been treated successfully with vancomycin, but there is still no consensus on the duration of treatment or the removal of the infected hardware. We describe a unique case of Brevibacterium luteolum bacteremia in a geriatric male patient undergoing chemotherapy for acute promyelocytic leukemia.

This case emphasizes the significance of recognizing and managing Brevibacterium species. Here, we present a unique case of Brevibacterium species isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a 60-year-old female with recently diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and small cell carcinoma of the lung. Management involved a two-week course of intravenous vancomycin. Brevibacterium species are infrequently encountered in clinical practice. Sharing this case report aims to enhance the limited understanding of Brevibacterium species infections and encourages discussion among healthcare professi

Brevibacteria are part of the normal flora of the skin and adjacent structures, but have been increasingly encountered in humans as opportunistic pathogens and have been isolated from various clinical specimens, generally causing infections in immuno-compromised patients. We present a case of a port-a-cath-related bacteraemia caused by Brevibacterium casei in a woman with a prior history of bilateral breast cancer. The clinical outcome was favourable.

Biological struvite (bio-struvite) production through biomineralization has been suggested as an alternative to chemically derived struvite production to recover phosphorus from wastewater streams. In this study, statistical experimental design techniques were used to find the optimal growth rate (μ) of Brevibacterium antiquum in sludge liquors. Acetate, oleic acid, NaCl, NH4-N, and Ca2+ were shown to affect the growth rate of B. antiquum. The growth rate reached 3.44 1/d when the bacteria were supplemented with 3.0% w/v NaCl and 1124 mg chemical oxygen demand/L as acetate. However, NaCl was f

Brevibacterium casei, previously considered as non-pathogenic to human host is now drawing attention due to its association with frequent infections in immunocompromised patients suffering from leukemia and HIV. Despite growing incidence of B. casei infections, limited number of genomes have been sequenced to date, this restricts our understanding on ge-nomic heterogeneity and the evolution of pathogenic B.casei strains. Here, we sequenced the whole genome of B. casei HOS 100 strain isolated from a tuberculosis patient. The genome size was 3.8 Mb and G + C content 67.94%. Present study estimat

The growth of the culture and biosynthesis of lysin were studied in Brevibacterium flavum 22 LD cultivated in a chemostat. During cultivation the flow rate of the medium and the partial pressure of oxygen dissolved in the medium were varied. The maximum yield of lysine, calculated in respect to the sucrose consumed, (Yp = g lysine . HCl/g sucrose) was registered when cyanide-resistant oxygen consumption was the least. A change of the cultivation conditions provoked a decrease of Yp value and a simultaneous increase in cyanide-resistant respiration. Possible reasons of the phenomena observed ar

Quinuclidine derivatives are promising pharmaceutical agents. Herein, we screened for microorganisms capable of converting 3-formylquinuclidine and found that Brevibacterium aurantiacum NBRC 12171 converted 3-formylquinuclidine into quinuclidin-3-ylmethanamine. Through enzyme purification and the heterologous expression of candidate genes, the L-alanine-3-formylquinuclidine aminotransferase gene was identified. Using purified recombinant L-alanine-3-formylquinuclidine aminotransferase, we identified L-alanine as an amino donor for the conversion of 3-formylquinuclidine to quinuclidin-3-ylmetha

Despite its low virulence potential and a commensal lifestyle as a member of the human skin microbiota, Brevibacterium casei has been increasingly reported as an opportunistic pathogen, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of the S51 strain isolated from a bloodstream infection. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of the draft genome sequence of the B. casei strain isolated from the clinical infection. The strain was identified using phenotypic and molecular methods and subsequently sequenced using the next-generation

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis remains the leading infectious complication of the technique and a major cause of catheter loss and transfer to haemodialysis. Although it is usually caused by common Gram-positive organisms, rare pathogens such as Brevibacterium casei are occasionally implicated. These coryneform bacteria are easily mistaken for skin contaminants, since they are part of the commensal flora, and may require molecular methods for identification. They are typically resistant not only to first-line beta-lactams but also to third-generation cephalosporins, clindamyci
