Factor structure of the expanded Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale.

This study investigated the factor structure of the expanded Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) on a sample of severe mentally ill homeless individuals. A confirmatory factor analysis using the Oblique Multiple Group method supported the typical five factor solution found in previous studies with the original BPRS. The five factors were labeled Thinking Disorder. Withdrawal. Anxiety-Depression, Hostility-Suspicion, and Activity. Alpha coefficients for four of the scales ranged from .73 to .81; however, the alpha coefficient for the Hostility-Suspicion scale was only .49.

Comparison of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Brief Symptom Inventory.

General psychopathology rating scales have multiple uses and have been used extensively. These rating scales may be found in several forms including an interview procedure and self-report. The advantages of self-report measures, as well as their possible deficits, were discussed. Because there are so many varying kinds of rating scales, criteria were set forth as to how to evaluate scales. An interview with a rating scale, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), and a self-report measure, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), were compared in this study. The BPRS has been widely used and has b

Meta-analysis of the brief psychiatric rating scale factor structure.

A meta-analysis (N=17,620; k=26) of factor analyses of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was conducted. Analysis of the 12 items from Overall et al.'s (J. E. Overall, L. E. Hollister, & P. Pichot, 1974) 4 subscales found support for his 4 subscales. Analysis of all 18 BPRS items found 4 components similar to those of Overall et al. In a 5-component solution, a 5th activation component emerged but was best supported among samples of schizophrenic patients. The first 4 components appear to form the core of the BPRS factor structure. Results of the meta-analysis suggest 5 subscales (with

Factor structure of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in unipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice patients with unipolar depression present with a variety of symptom clusters that may combine together in many different ways. However, only few factor analytic studies used general psychopathology scales to investigate the symptom structure of unipolar depression. METHODS: The study included 163 consecutive inpatients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of depressive disorder (ICD-10 codes F32 to F33). All patients were assessed with the 18-item version of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) within 3days from admission. Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rot

[Dimensional structure of the German version of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS)].

Since the early 1960s the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) has been one of the most frequently used standardized methods in international psychiatric research. The BPRS is used mainly for the rating of psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenic subjects. According to the results of factorial analyses, the original version of the BPRS is divided into five subscales, which have been preserved in the German translation. The validity of this original scale structure for the German BPRS version has not been investigated, however. A principal-components analysis of the 18 BPRS items carried o

The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) in geropsychiatric research: II. Representative profile patterns.

Cluster analysis methods were used to classify Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale profiles for a sample of 88 geropsychiatric patients. Five distinct profile patterns were found to represent adequately most differences in symptom and behavior characteristics of the aged patients. The five phenomenological types are described as agitated dementia, retarded dementia, anxious depression, withdrawn depression, and paranoid psychosis. The appropriateness of this nomenclature is examined with reference to clinical diagnosis, mental status examination, and drug treatment. Prototype profile patterns that

A confirmatory factor analysis of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in a homeless sample.

This study used a confirmatory factor analysis procedure, the Oblique Multiple Group Method (OMG), with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) on a sample of homeless individuals who had both a severe mental illness and a substance use disorder. The hypothesized five-factor model of Guy (1976) accounted for 93% of the possible variance, and all the appropriate scales had their highest loading on their respective hypothesized factor. In addition, the Guy model accounted for more variance than did an alternative model. The five factors were labelled: thinking disorder, anergia, anxiety-depres

Consistency of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale factor structure across a broad spectrum of schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) has been the workhorse of psychopathology assessment in studies of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders for over 40 years. Our goal was to evaluate the discriminant validity of the BPRS across the broad spectrum of persons with schizophrenia. SAMPLING AND METHODS: The total sample of 565 subjects with schizophrenia (84%) or schizoaffective disorder (16%) came from eight separate studies conducted under the aegis of the UCLA Clinical Research Center for Schizophrenia and Psychiatric Rehabilitation over a period of 15 years. The tot

Use of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale to measure success in a psychosocial day program.

This study contrasted six subscales of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) to determine their sensitivity to psychosocial treatment outcome. An expanded version of the BPRS was administered to 216 clients on admission to a day program. The subscale measuring hostility and suspiciousness discriminated at intake clients who were therapeutically discharged from clients who did not complete the program and predicted discharge status after the investigators controlled for the effects of demographic variables. Significant reductions in scores were obtained on five subscales for a subset of cli

Correlations between the MMPI and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients.

Though self-report measures and clinician-based ratings are extensively used to document psychopathology, there has been little work examining the relationship between these different types of measurement techniques. The current work examined the relationship between the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Correlations were calculated in an initial exploratory sample, and a set of relationships was selected for confirmation in a second sample. The BPRS items of hallucinator

Longitudinal Factor Structure of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale Among Incident Cases of Schizophrenia Attending a Nigerian Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia, from its early conceptualization, has been described in distinct clinical subtypes. However, these categories were found not to be stable phenotypes over time, hence the dimensional option, whereas at cross-sectional level, the dimensions of psychopathology have been replicated across studies; there is dearth of data on the longitudinal stability of the factor structure of the symptoms of schizophrenia in African populations. AIM: This study examined the longitudinal stability of the factor structure of the 18-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) across interv

The five-item Brief-Symptom Rating Scale as a suicide ideation screening instrument for psychiatric inpatients and community residents.

BACKGROUND: An efficient screening instrument which can be used in diverse settings to predict suicide in different populations is vital. The aim of this study was to use the five-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5) as a screening instrument for the prediction of suicide ideation in psychiatric, community and general medical settings. METHODS: Five hundred and one psychiatric, 1,040 community and 969 general medical participants were recruited. The community participants completed a structured telephone interview, and the other two groups completed the self-report BSRS-5 questionnaire.

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Expanded in veterans with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and severe mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbid severe mental illness (SMI) are often underserved and undertreated. Empirical validation of commonly used measures of psychiatric symptoms in clinical practice, such as the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Expanded (BPRS-E), is warranted in this vulnerable population. As such, this study sought to validate the factor structure and examine the psychometric properties of the BPRS-E among Veterans with comorbid PTSD and SMI. METHODS: The study sample included 126 Veterans with comorbid PTSD and SMI recruited for a larger

Meta-analytic exploration of the joint factors of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale - Expanded (BPRS-E) and the positive and negative symptoms scales (PANSS).

Previous meta-analyses of the BPRS-E and PANSS were combined to analyze the joint factors across 77 factor analyses from 68 studies of 32,896 individuals. The BPRS-E and PANSS share the 18 original BPRS items and each has additional unique items (6 BPRS-E and 12 PANSS). Based on the combined data across the BPRS-E and PANSS four separate sets of factor analyses were conducted using sample weighting (weighted and unweighted) and matrix type (similarity coefficients and reproduced correlations). Five factors: Positive Symptoms, Affect, Negative Symptoms, Disorganization and Activation-Mania were

Symptom structure of acute mania: a factor study of the 24-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in a national sample of patients hospitalized for a manic episode.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing interest in dimensional psychopathology and the use of symptom clusters in clinical research, factor analytic studies of mania are rare. Most studies included not only manic patients, but also patients with a mixed episode or other severe mental disorders. We aimed at further elucidating the symptom structure of manic states. METHODS: As part of a national survey of acute psychiatric inpatient care, all patients admitted to a random sample of Italian public and private facilities during an index period underwent a standardized assessment, including the 24-item B

Toxoplasmosis Is More Frequent in Schizophrenia Patients Than in the General Population in Mexico and Is Not Associated with More Severe Course of Schizophrenia Measured with the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale.

Toxoplasmosis is a disease, which was discovered in 1908, caused by the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii. T. gondii infects neuronal, glial, and muscle cells, and chronic infections are characterized by the presence of cysts, in the brain and muscle cells, formed by bradyzoites. T. gondii is capable of synthesizing L-DOPA, a precursor of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is key in the etiology of neuropsychological disorders such as schizophrenia. Previous studies have shown high levels of IgG Toxoplasma antibodies in schizophrenia patients. Many published studies show that

Jumping to conclusions correlates with negative symptoms, poor response inhibition, and impaired functioning in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The jumping to conclusions (JTC) bias is the tendency to make immediate decisions based on little information. There are few studies that have investigated the relationship between JTC and frontal lobe function. We examined the association between JTC and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: In total, 50 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and 50 healthy control individuals were administered the beads task. Individuals diagnosed with schizophren

Audio-digital recordings to assess ratings reliability in clinical trials of schizophrenia.

We examined ratings reliability in 5 clinical trials of subjects with schizophrenia experiencing an acute exacerbation of psychosis. Audio-digital recordings of site-based interviews of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) or Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were used to obtain blinded, site-independent scores to evaluate paired scoring concordance. High intraclass correlations were noted between 1810 paired site-based and site-independent PANSS scores (r = 0.801) and 1837 paired BPRS scores (r = 0.897) with high limits of agreement such that 93.9% of paired scores were within

Variations in the Hoffmann reflex recovery curve related to clinical manifestations of schizoaffective disorder.

Recovery curves of the Hoffmann reflex (H reflex) were measured in both legs of 10 unmedicated inpatients with schizoaffective disorder, depressed type. Neither recovery curve height of the right leg nor that of the left leg was significantly correlated with clinical psychopathology, although a consistent negative relation was noted between recovery curve height of the left leg and psychopathology. Right-left differences in recovery curve height significantly correlated with both Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression ratings of psychopathology, such that relat

Psychiatric side effects of acute high-dose corticosteroid therapy in neurological conditions.

It has been implied that high-dose corticosteroids (CSs) commonly cause psychiatric side effects. Here, we examined the rate and risk factors of psychiatric side effects during high-dose CS treatment in patients with neurological disorders. Patients treated with high-dose intravenous CSs for neurological disorders were evaluated for depression, mania, and psychosis using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale, and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale before CS treatment, immediately after, and 1 month following treatment.
