Seedling diversity, development and evolution in Bromeliaceae Juss. (Poales).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Understanding post-seminal development is essential for species conservation and provides key insights into reproductive biology and macroevolution. Despite their remarkable structural diversity among monocots, seedlings remain an understudied developmental stage, although they are critical for juvenile sporophyte survival and establishment. In Bromeliaceae, one of the major adaptive radiations of monocots, knowledge of seedling development remains fragmented and taxonomically biased. This study comparatively characterizes the ontogeny and morphoanatomy of bromeliad seedli

Unravelling the conservation status of the genus Puya (Bromeliaceae) across the Neotropics.

Assessments of the conservation status of species included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) are crucial for prioritising global conservation action, particularly for the most threatened species. A notable example of an endangered plant group in the Neotropics is the genus Puya (Bromeliaceae), which comprises 229 species primarily distributed across the Andean region. Studies have shown that Puya species have been increasingly threatened by habitat transformation caused by human activities, including burning, agriculture, construction, quarrying, and

Antinociceptive effect of Nidularium procerum: a Bromeliaceae from the Brazilian coastal rain forest.

Nidularium procerum, a common plant of the Brazilian flora, has not yet been studied for its pharmacological properties. We report here that extracts of N. procerum show both analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Oral (p.o.) or intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of an aqueous crude extract from leaves of N. procerum (LAE) inhibited the writhing reaction induced by acetic acid (ED50 value = 0.2 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) in a dose-dependent manner. This analgesic property was confirmed in rats using two different models of bradykinin-induced hyperalgesia; there was 75% inhibition of pain

Anti-allergic properties of the bromeliaceae Nidularium procerum: inhibition of eosinophil activation and influx.

New therapeutic approaches for the treatment of allergic diseases can be aided by the development of agents capable of regulating eosinophilic leukocytes. Here, we evaluated the anti-allergic properties of a crude extract of the Brazilian bromeliaceae Nidularium procerum, focusing on its effects on allergic eosinophilia. By studying allergic pleurisy in actively sensitized C57Bl/6 mice, we observed that pretreatment with N. procerum (2 mg/kg; i.p.) reduced pleural eosinophil influx triggered by allergen challenge. N. procerum was also able to reduce lipid body numbers found within infiltrating

Evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity of Pseudananas macrodontes (Morr.) Harms (Bromeliaceae) fruit extract in rats.

Several species of the family Bromeliaceae are characterized by the production of proteases in unusual amounts, especially in fruits. Bromelain, an extract rich in cysteine endopeptidases obtained from Ananas comosus L., and a few other proteases have been used as anti-inflammatory agents for some years, but bromelain is still mainly being used as alternative and/or complementary therapy to the treatment with glucocorticoids, nonsteroidal antirheumatics, and immunomodulators. In this study, the anti-inflammatory action of a partially purified extract from Pseudananas macrodontes (Morr.) Harms

In vitro activity of pineapple extracts (Ananas comosus, Bromeliaceae) on Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

Measures to control the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, based only on chemical products are becoming unsustainable, mainly because of the development of resistance. The objective of this study was to test the effect of the aqueous extract of pineapple skin (AEPS) and bromelain extracted from the stem (Sigma-Aldrich®, B4882) on engorged females and larvae of R. (B.) microplus in vitro. These substances were diluted in water and evaluated at eight concentrations. Engorged females were collected and distributed in groups of 10, with three repetitions for each treatment. After im

Anti-inflammatory activity in the aqueous crude extract of the leaves of Nidularium procerum: A bromeliaceae from the Brazilian coastal rain forest.

Nidularium procerum LINDMAN, a common bromeliaceae from the Brazilian flora, remains poorly studied regarding its chemical and pharmacological properties. We have recently published that N. procerum has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. In the present work, we have investigated potential mechanisms involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of N. procerum aqueous extract on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-, platelet activating factor (PAF)- or formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP)-induced pleurisy models of inflammation. We found that the aqueous extract of N. procerum leaves (

Increased Multiplication Rates of Vriesea hieroglyphica (Carriere) E. Morren Through a Temporary Immersion System.

The main difficulty for the cultivation and conservation of bromeliad species is the reduced number of propagules and slow growth of many of the species, resulting in a low propagation efficiency. Bromeliad plants are hardy and relatively easy to cultivate, with a high ornamental and ecological importance. Aiming at efficient micropropagation rates of V. hieroglyphica, a highly valued bromeliad, with very low propagation efficiency, a temporary immersion system was used and compared to semisolid and liquid static medium. Cultures obtained from in vitro germinated seeds were used as explants, m

Conservation of Vriesea flammea L.B.Sm., an endemic Brazilian bromeliad: effects of nutrients and carbon source on plant development.

Bromeliaceae is restricted to the Neotropical region and has a high degree of endemism, which contributes to increased biodiversity because of the diverse morphological characteristics of individuals. In order to develop an in vitro conservation technology to obtain plants for reintroduction, seeds of Vriesea flammea L.B.Sm. were collected, sterilized and germinated in culture medium. The plants obtained were cultured for 180 days in MS medium with different concentrations of mineral nutrients (25 and 50% of nitrogenous salts and macronutrients), and different concentrations of sucrose (20, 30

The metabolic mechanisms of formaldehyde in the roots, stems and leaves of Dieffenbachia maculata.

Indoor formaldehyde primarily originates from building materials, furniture, artificial boards, and various adhesive coatings. Phytoremediation is a green and environmentally friendly method for removing formaldehyde. The existing researches on the removing formaldehyde by plants lacked exploration of Dieffenbachia maculata, which had a purification rate of formaldehyde of 43.7%. This study subjected the roots, stems and leaves of D. maculata to time-gradient treatments with formaldehyde isotopic solutions. The metabolites for assimilating formaldehyde in the roots, stems and leaves parts of D

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) display selective behaviors while foraging bromeliads (Puya spp.) in high elevation puna grasslands.

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) forage extensively on bromeliads (Puya spp.) across their range, although their selectivity for bromeliads is less understood. We report on foraging activity by Andean bears on two species of bromeliad, Puya leptostachya and Puya membranacea, in high elevation puna grasslands (3499-3806 m.a.s.l) within and near Manu National Park (MNP) in SE Peru. We established two ridgeline transects (inside and outside MNP) with perpendicular transects running downslope. We recorded whether bromeliad plants were foraged by Andean bears on four separate sampling occasions th

Attraction or Repelling Effects of Commercial Plant Essential Oils on the Synanthropic Cheiracanthium mildei (Araneae: Cheiracanthiidae).

The northern yellow sac spider Cheiracanthium mildei L. Koch, is expanding its range to Central Europe, especially to synanthropic habitats. The spiders become unwanted companions because of the unreasonable fear - arachnophobia, and estetic reason - silk retreats in corners, capturing dust. The most commonly used substances against spiders are pesticides, which are, however, toxic. In our work we tested the attraction or repellence of 15 essential oils (EO) from plants representing eight families to C. mildei. Our research has shown a significant repellent effect of EO from three plants, name

Differences in gastroprotective and mutagenic actions between polar and apolar extracts of Ananas ananassoides.

Several plants are used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Ananas ananassoides (Baker) L.B. Asthma caused by bromelain: an occupational allergy.

Bromelains consist of a group of proteolytic enzymes of Bromeliaceae. They are commonly used in pharmaceutical industries, food production and in diagnostic laboratories. Bromelains are known to cause IgE-mediated reactions of both the immediate type and the 'late phase reaction of immediate type reaction' with predominantly respiratory symptoms. We report four cases of occupational allergy to bromelain in workers of a blood grouping laboratory. These observations prompted us to investigate the sensitization rate to bromelain in all workers of the particular diagnostic laboratory who had conta

Acanthamoeba misidentification and multiple labels: redefining genotypes T16, T19, and T20 and proposal for Acanthamoeba micheli sp. nov. (genotype T19).

Acanthamoeba species are ubiquitous amoebae able to cause important infections in humans and other vertebrates. The full/near-full sequences (>2000 bp) of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA or 18S rDNA) are used to cluster Acanthamoeba as genotypes, labeled T1 to T20. Genotype T15 remains an exception, being described only partially on a 1500-bp fragment. Strains are thus usually identified based on their 18S identity matches with reference strains, often using shorter (<500 bp) diagnostic fragments of the gene. Nevertheless, short fragments (<1000 bp) have been used to propose gen
