A bromine compound existing in blood.

Since a bromine compound with REM-sleep-inducing and anti-choline esterase activities have been isolated from human cerebrospinal fluid, and was identified as 1-methylheptyl gamma-bromoacetoacetate, the compound was chemically synthesized. It was found that this compound was composed with three forms, i.e., a keto-form, an enol-form that changed gradually from keto-form by tautomerism, and a stable six-membered ring form (= cyclic r-Br) converted from enol form, when it was chemically synthesized. In addition, it was found that the six-membered ring form of this bromine compound was present in

Chemical pneumonitis due to exposure to bromine compounds.

A 60-year-old laboratory technician developed pulmonary infiltrates consistent with chemical pneumonitis following accidental exposure to a mixture of hydrogen bromide and phosphorus tribromide. A protracted clinical course ensued consistent with bronchiolitis obliterans. These problems may have been avoided if the potential for subsequent damage had been realized at the time of the initial exposure. Health personnel must be aware of the potentially delayed effects of accidental exposures to respiratory irritants.

Recent developments in the analysis of brominated flame retardants and brominated natural compounds.

This article reviews recent literature on the analysis of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and brominated natural compounds (BNCs). The main literature sources are reviews from the last five years and research articles reporting new analytical developments published between 2003 and 2006. Sample pretreatment, extraction, clean-up and fractionation, injection techniques, chromatographic separation, detection methods, quality control and method validation are discussed. Only few new techniques, such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) or pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), have been investi

Natural production of organic bromine compounds in Berlin Lakes.

Berlin surface waters are characterized by elevated concentrations of organic bound bromine (up to 35 microg/L) in late summer. Organic bromine compounds in lakes are of significant importance because human life is closely connected to fresh water. Apart from recreational use, fresh water is frequently used for the production of drinking water, e.g., after bank filtration. Therefore the source, particularly the mechanism responsible for the formation is studied. Field studies indicate that the organic bromine compounds, measured as adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr), are autochthonous. Staggere

Burns caused by bromine and some of its compounds.

Our experience with infrequent and unfamiliar types of injury caused by various compounds of bromine are described and discussed. While bromine containing compounds share some of the characteristics of other common causes of chemical burns, they also have a specific, exclusive mode of affecting the skin. The delay in the appearance of clinical signs and symptoms is an important factor to be considered by those who treat injuries caused by bromine or some of its compounds, or by those who may be the first to see persons who are injured by these agents. As most of the injuries occur at work (92

Search for stratospheric bromine reservoir species: theoretical study of the photostability of mono-, tri-, and pentacoordinated bromine compounds.

Previous work has shown that pentacoordinated bromine compounds have their lowest excited electronic states shifted to the blue relative to monocoordinated bromine molecules, and that this shift may be large enough to render them photostable in the lower stratosphere. Our earlier work has also shown that certain pentacoordinated bromine compounds are thermodynamically stable relative to their mono- or tricoordinated isomers, suggesting that if a bromine stratospheric reservoir species exists, it may be a pentacoordinated compound. In this study we have examined the singlet and triplet excited

Organic bromine compounds produced in sea ice in Antarctic winter.

During polar springtime, active bromine drives ozone, a greenhouse gas, to near-zero levels. Bromine production and emission in the polar regions have so far been assumed to require sunlight. Here, we report measurements of bromocarbons in sea ice, snow, and air during the Antarctic winter that reveal an unexpected new source of organic bromine to the atmosphere during periods of no sunlight. The results show that Antarctic winter sea ice provides 10 times more bromocarbons to the atmosphere than Southern Ocean waters, and substantially more than summer sea ice. The inclusion of these measurem

Airborne measurements of organic bromine compounds in the Pacific tropical tropopause layer.

Very short-lived brominated substances (VSLBr) are an important source of stratospheric bromine, an effective ozone destruction catalyst. However, the accurate estimation of the organic and inorganic partitioning of bromine and the input to the stratosphere remains uncertain. Here, we report near-tropopause measurements of organic brominated substances found over the tropical Pacific during the NASA Airborne Tropical Tropopause Experiment campaigns. We combine aircraft observations and a chemistry-climate model to quantify the total bromine loading injected to the stratosphere. Surprisingly, d

Occurrence and source of brominated organic compounds in surface waters.

Monitoring of organic halogen compounds, measured as adsorbable organically bound bromine (AOBr), in an eutrophic lake, which is influenced by treated waste water, revealed repeatedly high concentrations of organobromine compounds in late summer, whereas five times lower values were measured during the rest of the year. It was possible to reproduce the in situ observed AOBr increase in the laboratory. Batch experiments were performed with lake water from two different lakes and an algae culture. It could be shown that the AOBr production is not limited to strong waste water influenced lakes. F

Untargeted Screening and Distribution of Organo-Bromine Compounds in Sediments of Lake Michigan.

Previously unreported natural and synthetic organo-bromine compounds (NSOBCs) have been found to contribute more than 99% of total organic bromine (TOB) in environmental matrices. We recently developed a novel untargeted method (data-independent precursor isolation and characteristic fragment, DIPIC-Frag) and identified ∼2000 NSOBCs in two sediments from Lake Michigan. In this study, this method was used to investigate the distributions of these NSOBCs in 23 surficial samples and 24 segments of a sediment core from Lake Michigan. NSOBCs were detected in all 23 surficial samples and exhibited 1

X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies on model compounds for biological iodine and bromine.

X-ray absorption spectra of a number of organic iodine and bromine compounds of biological relevance, as well as of a series of iodine compounds with different oxidation states, have been measured. The iodine K-edge spectra (XANES) are found to be relatively featureless but the position of the edge is found to be sensitive to formal valence (among other factors), and the edge shape to the number of bound O atoms. EXAFS spectra of organohalogen compounds (both iodine and bromine) can be used to discriminate between aliphatic and aromatic compounds. There are differences both in the distances fr

Multigenerational Effects and Demographic Responses of Zebrafish ( Danio rerio) Exposed to Organo-Bromine Compounds.

Long-term exposure to toxic chemicals often has deleterious effects on aquatic organisms. In order to support appropriate environmental management of chemicals, a mathematical model was developed to characterize the effects of chemicals on multigenerational population dynamics in aquatic animals. To parametrize the model, we conducted a multigenerational laboratory toxicity test in zebrafish ( Danio rerio) exposed to 2-bromo-4,6-dinitroaniline (BDNA). Long-term exposure to BDNA considerably reduced the fecundity of adult zebrafish (F0 and F1) and caused deformities in the offspring (F2). Life

Determination of iodine and bromine compounds in foodstuffs by CE-inductively coupled plasma MS.

A CE-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (CE-ICP-MS) method for iodine and bromine speciation analysis is described. Samples containing ionic iodine (I(-) and IO(3)(-)) and bromine (Br(-) and BrO(3)(-)) species are subjected to electrophoretic separation before injection into the microconcentric nebulizer (CEI-100). The separation has been achieved in a 50 cm length x 75 microm id fused-silica capillary. The electrophoretic buffer used is 10 mmol/L Tris (pH 8.0), while the applied voltage is set at -8 kV. Detection limits are 1 and 20-50 ng/mL for various I and Br compounds, respecti

Sono-bromination of aromatic compounds based on the ultrasonic advanced oxidation processes.

A novel, mild "sono-halogenation" of various aromatic compounds with potassium halide was investigated under ultrasound in a biphasic carbon tetrachloride/water medium. The feasibility study was first undertaken with the potassium bromide and then extended to chloride and iodide analogues. This methodology could be considered as a new expansion of the ultrasonic advanced oxidation processes (UAOPs) into a synthetic aspect as the developed methodology is linked to the sonolytic disappearance of carbon tetrachloride. Advantages of the present method are not only that the manipulation of the brom
