The intraperitoneal injection of multiple doses of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUDR) into pregnant mice produced abnormalities limited to the hind limbs of the offspring. This effect is probably a result of a metabolic lesion. When injected into newborn mice, BUDR did not increase the incidence of tumors.

Proliferative activity of meningiomas was examined in 12 consecutive cases by administering bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) before surgical removal and by immunohistochemical staining of the removed tumours using anti-BrdU monoclonal antibody (anti-BrdU MAb) to detect BrdU-labelled tumour cells. In a series of 44 bronchial biopsies from patients suspected of having endobronchial lung carcinoma, the validity of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and Ki67 antigen as proliferative indicators was evaluated in ethanol fixed, paraffin embedded tissue. Replication of vaccinia and monkeypox viruses was impeded in the presence of 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) in RL-33 cells derived from rabbit lung tissue. The different degree of inhibition was found among strains of those viruses, in which it was evident that five strains (CV-1, Lister, IHD, Dairen-I and Ikeda) of vaccinia viruses resulted in more reduced yields of infectious virus than four strains (Sen-19, Orang Utan, Copenhagen and Sierra Leone) of monkeypox viruses. There was also strain variation in BUdR sensitivity within vaccinia viruses but not in the case of monkeypox viruses.

The immunohistochemical detection of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was used to study the cell proliferation in the developing rat pineal gland, from the appearance of pineal primordium in the embryonic day 15 (E15) until 30 days after birth.
