This study describes 32 fungal endophytes isolated from different tissues of Brugmansia aurea Lagerh. Each fungal strain was authenticated based on internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these fungi are distributed in three classes, seven orders and 12 genera. The dichloromethane extracts of endophytic strains were screened for anticancer and antimicrobial activity. Anticancer activity of extracts against human cancer cell lines revealed that 50% strains are active with IC 50 < 10 μg/mL. While analysing antimicrobial potential against both Gram-positive a

Anticholinergic pharmacological agents are commonly misused because of their euphoric effects, increased energy, improved mood, and enhanced social interactions. Some herbal products with anticholinergic properties can also be abused for their psychoactive effects. One such ornamental plant is Brugmansia suaveolens, which contains alkaloids including atropine and scopolamine and can produce toxic effects. This case report describes a male patient with Brugmansia suaveolens abuse and coexisting multiple substance use disorders. The patient reported consuming a decoction of Brugmansia suaveolens

Brugmansia candida (syn. Datura candida) is a South American native plant that produces tropane alkaloids. Hyoscyamine, 6β-hydroxyhyoscyamine (anisodamine), and scopolamine are the most important ones due to their anticholinergic activity. These bioactive compounds have been historically and widely applied in medicine and their demand is continuous. Their chemical synthesis is costly and complex, and thereby, these alkaloids are industrially produced from natural producer plants. The production of these secondary metabolites by plant in vitro cultures such as hairy roots presents certain advan

Endophytic fungi are rich sources of structurally complex chemical scaffolds with interesting biological activities. However, their metabolome is still unknown, making them appealing for novel compound discovery. To maximize the number of secondary metabolites produced from a single microbial source, we used the "OSMAC (one strain-many compounds) approach." In potato dextrose medium, M. phaseolina produced phomeolic acid (1), ergosterol peroxide (2), and a volatile compound 1,4-benzene-diol. Incorporating an epigenetic modifier, sodium valproate, affected the metabolite profile of the fungus.

The study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of Brugmansia arborea L. flower extracts, solvent fractions, and isolated compounds. B. arborea L flowers were extracted with aqueous methanol, and concentrated extract was successively partitioned into EtOAc, n-BuOH, and H2O fractions. Repeated silica gel and octadecyl silica gel column chromatographies for EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions led to the isolation of a new phenylalkyl glycoside (6), along with five known ones. Several spectroscopic data led to the structure determination of one new phenylalky glycoside as brugmans

UNLABELLED: Angel's trumpets (Brugmansia spp.) are important medicinal and ornamental plants belonging to the Solanaceae family, domesticated in the Andean region of South America. Indigenous communities in the Colombian Andes have created unique medicinal cultivars exhibiting a variety of unusual shapes in leaves, and specific uses for ritual or medicinal procedures. These cultivars exhibit leaf symptoms typically associated with viral infections, including mosaic, vein chlorosis, and morphological deformities. Colombian datura virus (CDV) is one of the most studied viruses in Brugmansia, whi

A 5-year-old previously healthy boy presented with typical findings of Guillain-Barré syndrome and unilateral tonic pupil. He was placed on mechanical ventilation for 35 days for respiratory failure. Plasmapheresis and two courses of intravenous immunoglobulin therapy were given to the patient, and he experienced stepwise recovery from his illness. This case of acute motor axonal neuropathy type Guillain-Barré syndrome is novel in that the cause was established as ingestion of a toxic solanaceous plant, angel's trumpet (Brugmansia suaveolens; syn. Datura suaveolens). Understanding the signs an
