Melioidosis in Brunei Darussalam.

Melioidosis continues to be a major health care problem in Brunei Darussalam. The age of patients, gender distribution, risk factors, and clinical presentations are similar to those reported from other countries in the region. The incidence of melioidosis was high during the wet months and in the Temburong district, which has the highest annual rainfall. In spite of adequate facilities for diagnosis and treatment, the mortality remains high (27%). Women and those presenting with septic shock had higher mortality. There is a case for making melioidosis a notifiable disease in Brunei Darussalam.

Thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathies in Brunei Darussalam.

One thousand consecutive Brunei Darussalam patients referred with low Hb, and/or low MCV and MCH (Hb < 12.5g/dl, MCV < 76fl, MCH < 27pg) were studied in the laboratory for underlying haemoglobinopathies. 30.0% of such patients were proved to have either beta-thalassaemia trait, beta-thalassaemia major, Hb AE, Hb EE, Hb E beta-thalassaemia or Hb H disease. In some, the haemoglobin abnormality was not identified precisely. Alpha-thalassaemia was suspected in an additional 4.3% of cases but confirmation study by globin-chain synthesis was not available. A prospective review of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Brunei.

Brunei has a small population and a unique medical setup: The number of laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LCs) performed in our institution represents the total number of cases performed in this country. A prospective analysis of all the LCs performed in Brunei is presented. All 220 LCs performed between February 1, 1992, and November 30, 1996, were prospectively recorded on a detailed protocol. Analyses were made with respect to preoperative patient demography, intraoperative complications, and postoperative morbidity and mortality. Symptomatic gallstone disease was found to be common among the

Non-fatal occupational accidents in Brunei Darussalam.

Globally, ILO estimates 374 million non-fatal and 380,500 fatal by occupational accidents annually. Slips, trips, falls and contact with objects are the leading mode of injury, with extremities being the most common body part involved. Occupational accidents are of major concern for high risk occupational groups such as migrant workers, or work areas e.g. construction, manufacturing, wholesale, and retail industries. This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of non-fatal occupational injuries and its trends among industry workers in Brunei Darussalam. A retrospective cross-sectional rev

Profiles of autoimmune hepatitis in Brunei Darussalam.

BACKGROUND: Although subjects with a positive history of immediate allergy to penicillin and negative skin test are traditionally considered to tolerate penicillin, current evidence indicates that they may develop an immediate reaction despite negative skin and serum specific IgE tests. It is thought that these patients require additional tests to confirm the diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To assess in a large group of patients with a history of immediate allergy to penicillins but with both skin test and CAP-FEIA-negative to classical and side chain penicillin determinants, the role of controlled adm

Public opinion on renal transplantation in Brunei Darussalam.

Brunei Darussalam is a small Muslim country with a high prevalence and incidence of kidney disease. At present, there is no local transplant program for patients on the renal replacement therapy program. In order to assess feasibility of a local transplant program, we decided to conduct a survey to assess public opinion on renal transplantation. The majority of the 300 respondents (78.7%) were willing to donate their kidneys if needed. Even after learning of the small theoretical risks of kidney failure, 72.33% of all respondents were still willing to proceed with transplantation. Respondents

A preliminary study in medical anthropology in Brunei, Borneo.

Nine rural village communities in the jungle of Brunei, Borneo were studied to ascertain possible effects of rapid social change on the health of the inhabitants. The social mores and religious beliefs of the rural tribes--Iban, Dusun, and Punan--have undergone but little change over many hundreds of years. During the past three decades, however, enormous social pressures for change have envolved from extraordinary economic prosperity of the region, due to the exploitation of large discoveries of oil and gas. Much of the money has been invested in health care, with the result that malaria, typ

Occupationally Acquired Plasmodium knowlesi Malaria in Brunei Darussalam.

Simian malaria is a zoonotic disease caused by Plasmodium knowlesi infection. The common natural reservoir of the parasite is the macaque monkey and the vector is the Anopheles mosquito. Human cases of P. knowlesi infection has been reported in all South East Asian countries in the last decade, and it is currently the most common type of malaria seen in Malaysia and Brunei. Between 2007-2017, 73 cases of P. knowlesi infection were notified and confirmed to the Ministry of Health in Brunei. Of these, 15 cases (21%) were documented as work-related, and 28 other cases (38%) were classified as pro

Gastrodiamicrochila (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae), a new species from Brunei Darussalam.

A new orchid species, Gastrodiamicrochila is described and illustrated. The species was found in a mixed dipterocarp forest in the Belait district, Brunei Darussalam, northern Borneo in 2024. It is distinct from most Gastrodia species in western Malesia by its small lip and column, and presence of the smooth cushion-like tissue on the inner side of lateral sepals. Gastrodiamicrochila is only the second species of Gastrodia recorded for Brunei Darussalam and the seventh known species for Borneo. A determination key for all Gastrodia species occurring in western Malesia is also provided.

End-stage kidney disease in Brunei Darussalam (2011-2020).

INTRODUCTION: The Brunei Dialysis and Transplant Registry (BDTR) recorded data on patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) from 2011 to 2020, mainly for planning of services and benchmarking of standards. We report the trends of epidemiologic and performance parameters, compare performances between modalities of Kidney Replacement Therapy and evaluate the survival of ESKD patients over the 10-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of data were analysed from the BDTR over the 10-year period. Epidemiological data, blood parameters and dialysis are key performance indicators. RES

Rising incidence of primary liver cancer in Brunei Darussalam.

BACKGROUND: Primary liver cancer (PLC) is the fifth most common malignancy worldwide and is still associated with high mortality. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma are the two most common PLCs, and their incidence varies across regions. Currently there are no published data available on the incidence of PLC in Brunei Darussalam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All proven PLCs between 2000 and 2009 were identified from the National Cancer Registry and reviewed. Metastatic diseases were excluded. A total of 123 cases (male 65.8%, female 34.2%) were identified and their data collected
