Obesogenic environments: exploring the built and food environments.

Obesity is a significant health and social problem which has reached pandemic levels. The obesogenicity of an environment has been defined as 'the sum of influences that the surroundings, opportunities, or conditions of life have on promoting obesity in individuals or populations'. Prevention and treatment of obesity has focused on pharmacological, educational and behavioural interventions, with limited overall success. A novel and a longer-term approach would be to investigate the environments that promote high energy intake and sedentary behaviour; this has not yet been fully understood. The

Obesity and the Built Environment: A Reappraisal.

The built environment (BE) has been viewed as an important determinant of health. Numerous studies have linked BE exposure, captured using a variety of methods, to diet quality and to area prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. First-generation studies defined the neighborhood BE as the area around the home. Second-generation studies turned from home-centric to person-centric BE measures, capturing an individual's movements in space and time. Those studies made effective uses of global positioning system tracking devices and mobile phones, sometimes coupled with accelerom

Effects of 5D built environment and non-built-environment factors on injury crash risk: An interpretable machine learning analysis.

To identify the key determinants of traffic injury risk and clarify the relative roles of built environment factors and crash-context factors, this study develops a traffic injury risk identification framework that integrates 5D built environment variables with non-5D factors, using traffic crash data collected in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, from 2017 to 2019. After data cleaning, screening, and spatial matching, a total of 9,743 valid samples were obtained, and injury occurrence in a crash was defined as a binary dependent variable. On this basis, three feature sets were constructed, inc

Aging, frailty, and design of built environments.

Before developing agriculture, herding or metallurgy, humans occupied most of the world. Multiple socioculturally-based responses supported their migration, including building shelters and constructing niches to limit environmental stressors. Sheltered settings provided social support and security during stressful times, along with opportunities for injured, aging, and frail members to survive. Modern built environments are designed for similar purposes, to support human growth, development, reproduction, and maintenance. However, extended survival in modern settings has costs. With age, muscl

The role of the built environment in the disablement process.

The Disablement Process model explicates the transition from health conditions to disability and specifically emphasizes the role of intervening factors that speed up or slow down the pathway between pathology and disability. We used hierarchical Poisson regression analyses with data on older adults from central North Carolina to examine the role of the built environment as a modifying factor in the pathway between lower extremity functional limitations and activities of daily living. We found that, despite declining physical function, older adults report greater independence in instrumental a

Built environment associations with health behaviors among hispanics.

BACKGROUND: Few studies of the built environment and physical activity or other health behaviors have examined minority populations specifically. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between the built environment and multiple health behaviors and outcomes among Hispanic adults. METHODS: Community partners distributed surveys (n = 189) in 3 communities in southwest Kansas. Logistic regression was used to examine relationships between neighborhood perceptions and 4 outcomes. RESULTS: Meeting physical activity recommendations was associated with the presence of sidewalks and a

Dynamic Accounting of Carbon Uptake in the Built Environment.

Transforming building materials from net life-cycle CO2e emitters to carbon sinks is a key pathway towards decarbonizing the industrial sector. Current life-cycle assessments of materials (particularly "low-carbon" materials) often focus on cradle-to-gate emissions, which can exclude emissions and uptake (i.e., fluxes) later in the materials' life-cycle. Further, conventional CO2e emission characterization disregards the dynamic effects of the timing of emissions and uptake on cumulative radiative forcing from processes like manufacturing, biomass growth, and the decadal carbon storage in long

The influence of the built environment on adverse birth outcomes.

Adverse birth outcomes are associated with neonatal morbidity and mortality, and higher risk for coronary heart disease, non-insulin-dependent diabetes and hypertension in adulthood. Although there has been considerable research investigating the association between maternal and environmental factors on adverse birth outcomes, one risk factor, not fully understood, is the influence of the built environment. A search of MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane was conducted to find articles assessing the influence of the built environment on preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and small-for-gesta

Bike Share Usage and the Built Environment: A Review.

Bike share engages riders in physical activity, beneficial to health. In addition, it promotes green mobility and contributes to carbon neutrality. An understanding of the association between bike share usage and the built environment is essential for system operation/management and urban/transportation planning. Limited reviews of the existing literature exist now. Therefore, we review previous studies to decipher the complex relationship between bike share usage and the built environment. We focus on a few built environment dimensions (e.g., land use, transportation system, and urban design)

Built environment disparities are amplified during extreme weather recovery.

Extreme weather events such as hurricanes and floods cause increasing damage to communities, leading to substantial economic losses and displacement of populations1-6. Previous research suggests that there are disparities in the resilience capacity of neighbourhoods, predicting a recovery mechanism of either segmented withdrawal or reinforcement across different neighbourhood groups7-12. Assessing these hypotheses and investigating if-and to what extent-neighbourhood built environments recover at scale has been difficult because previous measures have relied on aggregated survey data1,7,9-14.

The effects of economic development and built environment on diabetes in CHINA.

BACKGROUND: With rapid economy growth, the prevalence of obesity, and related chronic diseases, has increased greatly. Although this has been widely recognized, little attention has been paid to the influence of built environment and economic growth, particularly for developing countries. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the potential relationship between the prevalence of diabetes and the built environment while considering the effects of socioeconomic change in China. METHODS: Three nationally representative samples are constructed and employed mainly based on various source

Surveillance of legionellosis and Legionella bacteria in the built environment in Singapore.

During the period 1986 to 1996, a total of 258 sporadic cases of community-acquired legionellosis was reported, giving a mean annual morbidity rate of 0.9 per 100,000 population. Majority of the cases (91.5%) was serologically diagnosed by the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test against Legionella pneumophila based on single sera with a titre of > or = 1:1024. The others were confirmed by a four-fold increase in IFA titre to a minimum of 1:128 (7.4%) and by culture (1.1%). Cases were reported predominantly among males, ethnic Indians, the elderly and those with concurrent medical conditio

A participatory virtual audit of the built environment for age-friendliness.

BACKGROUND: Geospatial studies that consider the relationships between the built environment and health typically rely on researcher-led 'objective' measurement of geospatial attributes of the built environment. Some studies can fail to find expected associations between environments and health outcomes where the geospatial measures do not reflect the experiences or perceptions of people themselves. We took a participatory approach to work with older adults with a concern for falling to assess the built environment in order that we could understand how their assessments relate to researcher as

The role of the natural and built environment in cycling duration in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Cycling for transportation has the potential to contribute to an increase in people's physical activity levels. A growing body of evidence links the natural and the built environment to cycling. Whereas previous studies were mostly done within one city or one region, the present study covers the whole of the Netherlands, allowing an investigation of whether associations between environmental characteristics and cycling are context-specific. The study examines the extent to which objectively measured natural and built environment characteristics contribute to cycling duration in the

Lyme Disease Transmission Risk: Seasonal Variation in the Built Environment.

Seasonal variation in spatial distribution and pathogen prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) influences human population risk of Lyme disease in peri-urban built environments. Parks, gardens, playgrounds, school campuses and neighborhoods represent a significant risk for Lyme disease transmission. From June 2012 through May 2014, ticks were collected using 1 m² corduroy cloths dragged over low-lying vegetation parallel to walkways with high human foot traffic. DNA was extracted from ticks, purified and presence of B. burgdorferi assessed by polymerase cha

Built-environment correlates of physical activity in youth with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Higher levels of physical activity (PA) among youth with multiple sclerosis (MS) associate with lower levels of disease activity, and better psychosocial outcomes. Yet, youth with MS remain inactive. Built-environment features may explain low PA and inform intervention design. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined associations between built-environment features and PA levels among youth with MS. METHODS: Youth (⩽18 years) with MS completed the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) for overall PA and a health contribution score (HCS; moderate & vigorous PA) i
