[Modern ideas about bulbourethral glands].

Bulbourethral glands are the accessory glands of the male reproductive system, the leading function of which is associated with ejaculation and includes both the neutralization of the acidic urine residues and environment of the female vagina, and friction reduction during the sexual intercourse. These glands play the role of immune barrier for urogenital infections, and also synthesize important autocrine and paracrine factors for the male urogenital system development. Glands pathologies usually have a subclinical course, however they can also lead to the functional disorders of the human ur

Imaging of the Bulbourethral (Cowper) Gland: Abnormalities and Differential Diagnosis.

Normal Cowper glands and ducts are imperceptible at imaging. However, abnormalities of the Cowper glands and ducts are increasingly seen owing to increasing use of cross-sectional imaging. In this article, the authors present a comprehensive review of the normal anatomy of the Cowper glands and ducts and the clinical and imaging findings of conditions that affect them in an effort to help lead to appropriate diagnosis and management. A Cowper duct syringocele is a congenital or acquired dilatation of the Cowper duct in the bulb of the corpus spongiosum. Retrograde urethrography is the standard

Somatic innervation contributes to the release of bulbourethral gland secretion in male rats.

BACKGROUND: In male rats, the bulbourethral glands (Bu-Gs) are the unique accessory sexual glands surrounded by striated musculature. However, until now the role of this musculature was unknown. OBJECTIVES: (i) To characterize the Bu-Gs striated muscular layer in male rats and determine its innervation and response to genital stimulation. (ii) To reveal the role of the Bu-Gs striated musculature in the release of glandular secretion. (iii) To elucidate the effect of bilateral ablation of the Bu-Gs on copulatory behavior and seminal fluid characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult Wistar m

Infertility in CFW/R1 mice associated with cystic dilatation of the bulbourethral gland.

A third of male inbred CFW/R1 mice in a breeding colony developed subcutaneous, bilateral, perineal masses determined to be cystic bulbourethral glands. The masses developed in mice between 4 and 15 months of age. After development of these perineal masses, diseased males were unable to produce offspring. Gross examination revealed the masses impinging on the scrotum and displacing the testes into the inguinal canal. The perineal masses were paired, membranous, translucent cysts, 6 to 10 mm3, attached to the bulbocavernosus muscle and connected to the pelvic urethra by way of a non-patent duct

Histomorphological and immunohistochemical findings in testes, bulbourethral glands and brain of immunologically castrated male piglets.

The aim of this study was the histological and immunohistochemical evaluation and comparison of testicular, bulbourethral and brain tissue in immunized and intact control boars. Fourteen male piglets, aged between 10 and 16 weeks, were vaccinated twice subcutaneously 4 to 5 weeks apart with Improvac, an anti-GnRH vaccine. The pigs were sacrificed 1 to 16 weeks following the second injection. Testicular weight was recorded and various tissue samples were collected and fixed in formalin and Bouin's fixative for histological examination. In addition, 2 boars were immunized five times and slaughte

Collection of seasonally spermatozoa-rich semen by electroejaculation of laboratory woodchucks (Marmota monax), with and without removal of bulbourethral glands.

Male woodchucks were subjected to electroejaculation during the early- or mid-breeding season by a commercial stimulator and rectal probe (1.3 x 13 cm, with longitudinal electrode strips on one side) with electrodes oriented ventrally. A study of the voltage and stimulation parameters at a probe depth of 4 to 9 cm suggested that a series of 15 to 75 3-sec pulses of 3 to 6 V each could result in ejaculation and collection of semen. Pulses of only 1 to 2 V frequently caused erection but not ejaculation. Trials conducted on 12 bulbourethral (Cowper's) gland-intact males (n = 18 trials) versus six

Morphometric profiling and EphB2/B4 and ephrin-B1 membrane protein expression analysis in vesicular, bulbourethral, and preputial glands in mice.

Objectives: Male accessory sex glands are essential components of the reproductive system, providing secretions that support sperm function, fertility, and androgen-dependent reproductive processes. Despite the widespread use of mice as experimental models, comprehensive biometrical, histomorphometrical, and molecular characterization of their accessory sex glands remains limited. The present study investigated the vesicular, bulbourethral, and preputial glands of adult male mice with particular emphasis on biometric parameters, histological organization, and the expression of EphB2, EphB4, an

Epithelial Bmp (Bone morphogenetic protein) signaling for bulbourethral gland development: a mouse model for congenital cystic dilation.

The bulbourethral gland (BUG) is a male-specific organ, which secretes part of the semen fluid. As the BUG is located in the deep pelvic floor, its developmental process is still unclear. Bone morphogenetic protein (Bmp) signaling plays pivotal roles in various organs. However, the function of Bmp signaling for BUG development is still unclear. The present study aimed to elucidate the role of Bmp signaling in the development of the BUG. We observed the prominent nuclear accumulation of phosphorylated (p) SMAD1/5/8, the downstream molecules of Bmp signaling, during BUG epithelial development. T

Rare Intramedullary Mature Teratoma of the Spinal Cord With Prostatic and Bulbourethral Gland Formation: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BackgroundSpinal teratomas are exceedingly rare germ cell tumors, accounting for .1%-.5% of all spinal cord tumors, with adult-onset tumors being even more uncommon. Mature teratomas consist of differentiated tissues derived from the 3 embryonic germ layers and may contain a wide variety of adult-type tissue components. Prostatic glandular tissue has been documented in only a very limited number of spinal teratoma specimens, whereas bulbourethral gland tissue has never been reported in this setting.Patient PresentationWe report a 60-year-old male patient who presented with a 7-month history of

Bulbourethral gland adenocarcinoma in a 25-year-old man without comorbidities: radical resection of proximal urethrae with Mitrofanoff-type appendicovesicostomy.

Adenocarcinoma of the paraurethral gland is a rare tumour with no published prevalence in male patients. This report presents a case of bulbourethral gland adenocarcinoma in a 25-year-old man without comorbidities. After resection of the proximal urethra, sphincter and prostate, Mitrofanoff-type appendicovesicostomy was performed. In this case, chemotherapy or radiation was not included in the treatment as the surgery was estimated to be radical. The patient achieved good surgical and quality of life results. This case shows that macroscopic haematuria should be examined even in young age grou

Comparative analysis of the male reproductive accessory glands of bats Noctilio albiventris (Noctilionidae) and Rhynchonycteris naso (Emballonuridae).

In eutherian mammals, the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) comprise the prostate, bulbourethral glands, ampullary glands, and the seminal vesicles. Their composition, anatomy and function vary widely between species. This study aimed to characterize histologically and compare the RAGs of bats. The RAGs of Noctilio albiventris (Noctilionidae) and Rhynchonycteris naso (Emballonuridae) were studied using anatomical and histological methods, and were reconstructed three dimensionally. The RAGs of N. albiventris and R. naso are composed of a compact glandular complex that surrounds the ure

Gene expression and immunolocalization of low-affinity neurotrophin receptor (p75) in rabbit male reproductive tract during sexual maturation.

This study reports the gene expression and immunolocalization of the low-affinity neurotrophin receptor, p75, in accessory glands (prostate and bulbourethral glands) and epididymis (caput and cauda) of male rabbits during sexual maturation. We showed that p75 was expressed in all tissues studied with similar mRNA levels during this period. However, it was differentially immunolocalized in bulbourethral glands and stereocilia of epididymis. These findings may be related with some remodeling processes in the accessory glands during sexual maturation, which could be associated with sperm maturati

Effect of Perineal Urethrostomy on the Length of the Urethra of the Cat: A Cadaveric Study.

UNLABELLED: Perineal urethrostomy in cats is indicated for urethral pathologies located distal to the bulbourethral glands. The description of the bulbourethral glands as the cranial landmark when performing a PU is based on the increased urethral diameter at this location, rather than on an anatomical limitation. This suggests that urethral pathologies cranial to the bulbourethral glands could potentially be treated with PU. At present, the extent to which the pelvic urethra can be mobilized is unknown. Characterization and quantification of the effect of PU on the pelvic urethra is required

Localization and expression of spermadhesin PSP-I/PSP-II subunits in the reproductive organs of the boar.

The epithelial localization and expression of the spermadhesin PSP-I and PSP-II subunits were determined in the testis, ductus epididymes (caput, corpus and cauda), seminal vesicles and bulbourethral glands of mature boars, using immunohistochemical, western blotting and RT-PCR methods. Immunohistochemistry showed positive labelling for PSP-I and PSP-II antibodies in the epithelium of seminal vesicles in all males tested. Positive immunolabelling, but with variable intensity, was also present in the epididymal epithelium (caput, corpus and cauda), although varying largely among segments and bo

Morphological analysis of the male reproductive accessory glands of the bat Artibeus lituratus (Phyllostomidae: Chiroptera).

Bats are distributed worldwide from tropical to temperate regions. Despite their wide geographical radiation and advances in studies using evolutionary approaches, aspects related to the reproduction of these animals remain poorly explored, especially those related to the male reproductive accessory glands (RAGs). Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the morphophysiology of the male RAGs in the bat Artibeus lituratus. The RAGs in A. lituratus are composed of a compact intra-abdominal glandular complex, consisting of the prostate with two prostatic regions (ventral and dorsal), plus Littr

Accessory sex glands of male mice have the ability to synthesize taurine via the cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase pathway.

Our previous study showed that cysteine sulfinate decarboxylase (CSD) is expressed in the testis, epididymis, and ductus deferens. However, the expression of CSD and taurine concentration in the male accessory sex glands remain unknown. Therefore, we conducted immunohistochemical analysis, semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and western blotting in order to examine CSD expression in the seminal vesicle; bulbourethral gland; and prostate gland, including the dorsolateral prostate, ventral prostate, and anterior prostate. We also analyzed the tissue taurin

Morphophysiology of the male reproductive accessory glands of the bat Pteronotus gymnonotus (Mormoopidae: Chiroptera).

Mormoopidae is an exclusive Neotropical family of bats, distributed from southern Mexico to northeastern Brazil. Possibly due to its endemic distribution and very low occurrence (rarity), descriptions of their reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) are still lacking. Thus, this study aims to characterize the male RAGs of Pteronotus gymnonotus (Mormoopidae: Chiroptera). Results demonstrate that the RAGs of P. gymnonotus is composed of a prostatic complex, comprising two regions (ventral and dorsal prostates); urethral (Littre) glands, a pair of bulbourethral and ampullary glands, with the absence
