The susceptibility and resistance of Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus and Bulinus (Bulinus) truncatus rohlfsi to two strains of Schistosoma haematobium in Ghana.

The author presents the results of some laboratory experiments carried out to determine the susceptibility of the snail vectors of bilharziasis in Ghana to local strains of Schistosoma haematobium, isolated from children living in two districts near Accra: the Ke district, where Bulinus (Bulinus) truncatus rohlfsi is the important snail vector, and the Pokoasi district, where Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus is the exclusive intermediate host. Each strain was found to be virtually specific in its ability to develop in one or other of the vector species. The "Ke strain" developed readily in B. (B.)

Differentiation of Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus forskalii Snails in West Africa Using Morphometric Analysis.

PURPOSE: Accurate identification of medically important intermediate host and vector species is crucial for understanding disease transmission and control. Identifying Bulinus snails which act as intermediate host species for the transmission of schistosomiasis is typically undertaken using conchological and genital morphology as well as molecular methods. METHODS: Here, a landmark-based morphometric analysis of shell morphology was undertaken to determine its utility to distinguish the closely related and morphologically similar sister species Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus forskalii. Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus umbilicatus Snail Infestations by the Schistosoma haematobium Group in Niakhar, Senegal.

Thorough knowledge of the dynamics of Bulinus spp. infestation could help to control the spread of schistosomiasis. This study describes the spatio-temporal dynamics of B. senegalensis and B. umbilicatus infestation by the Schistosoma haematobium group of blood flukes in Niakhar, Senegal. Molecular identification of the S. haematobium group was performed by real-time PCR, targeting the Dra 1 gene in 810 samples of Bulinus spp. collected during the schistosomiasis transmission season in 2013. In addition to Dra 1 PCR, a rapid diagnostic-PCR was performed on a sub-group of 43 snails to discrimin

Differentiation between Bulinus truncatus and Bulinus hexaploidus by morphological characters, chromosomal study and compatibility with Schistosoma haematobium.

Schistosomiasis is a snail-born, neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by blood flukes (trematode worms) of the genusSchistosoma. It is the second most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease after malaria. Urogenital schistosomiasis is caused by Schistosoma haematobium which is transmitted by snail intermediate host of the genus Bulinus. This genus is a model system for the study of polyploidy in animals. This study aims to investigate ploidy levels existing among the Bulinus species and their compatibility with S. haematobium. The specimens were collected from two governorates in E

Divergent Effects of Schistosoma haematobium Exposure on Intermediate-Host Snail Species Bulinus nasutus and Bulinus globosus from Coastal Kenya.

AbstractSchistosoma haematobium infection causes urogenital schistosomiasis, a chronic inflammatory disease that is highly prevalent in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Bulinid snails are the obligate intermediate hosts in the transmission of this parasite. In the present study, Bulinus globosus and Bulinus nasutus snails from coastal Kenya were raised in the laboratory and exposed to miracidia derived from sympatric S. haematobium specimens to assess the species-specific impact of parasite contact and infection. The snails' subsequent patterns of survival, cercarial shedding, and reproductio

The spatial and seasonal distribution of Bulinus truncatus, Bulinus forskalii and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the intermediate host snails of schistosomiasis, in N'Djamena, Chad.

There is a paucity of epidemiological and malacological data pertaining to schistosomiasis in Chad. In view of a recently articulated elimination agenda, a deeper understanding of the spatio-temporal distribution of schistosomiasis intermediate host snails is pivotal. We conducted cross-sectional malacological surveys during the dry season (April/May 2013) and after the short rainy season (October 2013) in N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. Snails were identified at the genus and species level using morphological keys and molecular DNA barcoding approaches. Those belonging to Bulinus and Biomphal

Distribution and ecology of Bulinus truncatus in Khuzestan, Iran.

The results of a 5-year study on the distribution and ecology of Bulinus truncatus in Khuzestan, south-western Iran, are described. Live snails were found in 4 foci, namely, the main focus, the upper Karun River, the lower Karkheh River, and the Bala Rud watershed; in addition, dead snails were found in 3 other foci. The patchy distribution of snails was related to the presence of surface waters and to their chemical composition.Monthly observations on the population dynamics of the snails and on the role of the snails in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium and S. bovis were carried ou

Potential of Lanistes varicus in limiting the population of Bulinus truncatus.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of the Ampullariid, Lanistes varicus to prey on egg masses and juveniles of Bulinus truncatus snails, an intermediate host of urogenital schistosomiasis in West Africa. RESULTS: Lanistes varicus was found to feed voraciously on egg masses and juveniles of Bulinus truncatus, consuming all egg masses (20 -25) exposed to it within 24 h. Also, 95-100% of 1-2 days old B. truncatus snails exposed to a single L. varicus snail was consumed within 4 days. The presence of L. varicus snails greatly increased mortality in B. truncatus with mortality increasing with inc

Biological studies on the snail, Bulinus truncatus, in Central Iraq.

This paper presents some results of field and laboratory studies on Bulinus truncatus, the snail intermediate host of urinary bilharziasis in Iraq, made in 1958 as part of the work of the WHO Bilharziasis Control Project in that country.Observations on the linear distribution and size composition of Bulinus populations in the canals of central Iraq indicate that molluscicides might most suitably be applied in May before the entire snail population reaches breeding size, or early in November when most snails are juveniles. However, laboratory experiments appear to show that isolation of individ

Exploring the Adaptation of Bulinus senegalensis and Bulinus umbilicatus to the Dry and Rainy Season in Ephemeral Pond in Niakhar (Senegal), an Area of Seasonal Transmission of Urogenital Schistosomiasis.

Bulinus snails surviving drought play a key role in the seasonal transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis, although our knowledge of their adaptation to dry season is still limited. We investigated the survival dynamic and infestation by the Schistosoma haematobium of Bulinus snails during the dry and rainy seasons in a single pond in an area of seasonal schistosomiasis transmission in Senegal. During the rainy season, 98 (94.23%) B. senegalensis and six (5.76%) B. umbilicatus were collected, respectively. In the dry season, B. umbilicatus outnumbered B. senegalensis, but all five (100%) B.

Effect of temperature on the Bulinus globosus - Schistosoma haematobium system.

BACKGROUND: Given that increase in temperature may alter host-parasite relationships, the anticipated rise in temperature due to global warming might change transmission patterns of certain diseases. However, the extent to which this will happen is not well understood. METHODS: Using a host-parasite system involving Bulinus globosus and Schistosoma haematobium, we assessed the effect of temperature on snail fecundity, growth, survival and parasite development under laboratory conditions. RESULTS: Our results show that temperature may have a non-linear effect on snail fecundity and snail grow

Trematode infection affects shell shape and size in Bulinus tropicus.

Trematodes can increase intraspecific variation in the phenotype of their intermediate snail host. However, the extent of such phenotypic changes remains unclear. We investigated the influence of trematode infection on the shell morphology of Bulinus tropicus, a common host of medically important trematodes. We focused on a snail population from crater lake Kasenda (Uganda). We sampled a single homogeneous littoral habitat to minimize the influence of environmental variation on shell phenotype, and barcoded snails to document snail genotypic variation. Among the 257 adult snails analysed, 99 t

[Transcriptomic responses of Bulinus globosus to extreme temperature and drought stress].

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of extreme temperature and drought stress on the survival of Bulinus globosus, so as to provide the theoretical evidence for the genomic research of Bulinus in absence of reference genes. METHODS: B. globosus snail samples were collected from Kiwani Shehia in Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania, and offspring snails were obtained through laboratory breeding and reproduction. A total of 120 10-week-old B. globosus snails from the same generation were selected and randomly assigned into four groups, including the high-temperature drought (HD) group, normal temperat

[Bulinus truncatus, Planorbarius metidjensis and endemic bilharziosis in the southwestern Morocco].

Since Planorbarius metidjensis was recently found to be an experimental intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium in the South-West of Morocco, a study on planorbid and B. truncatus was carried out from 1997 to 2005. Eleven planorbid populations were identified in 1997 in the Agadir province, all living at high altitude (from 340 to 1380 m). In contrast, most of the seven bulinid populations inhabited low-lying zones. Three annual generations of P. metidjensis (April-July June-September, and August-March) were noted in two populations (living in perennial bodies of water) in Imouzzer so tha

Comparative karyology of the freshwater snails Bulinus tropicus and B. natalensis.

Species of the subgenus Bulinus s.s. occur in a polyploid series which is of interest because of the rarity of polyploidy in animal species and because there appears to be a relation between ploidy level and ability to transmit Schistosoma haematobium, a parasite of major public health importance. We describe a technique for the preparation of standard karyotypes using cell suspensions from colchicine-treated embryos. The results for two diploid species, B. tropicus (Krauss) and B. natalensis (Küster), are presented. Both karyotypes consist of 15 metacentric and 3 submetacentric chromosomes. H

Population genetics of the Schistosoma snail host Bulinus truncatus in Egypt.

The tropical freshwater snail Bulinus truncatus serves as an important intermediate host of several human and cattle Schistosoma species in many African regions. Despite some ecological and malacological studies, there is no information on the genetic diversity of B. truncatus in Egypt. Here, we sampled 70-100 snails in ten localities in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta. Per locality, we sequenced 10 snails at a partial fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1) and we genotyped 25-30 snails at six microsatellite markers. A total of nine mitochondrial haplotypes were detected, of
