Thermotolerance in Mucorales (Mucoromycotina) is one of the factors to be opportunistic pathogens, causing mucormycosis. Among thermotolerant mucoralean fungi, Burkholderiaceae-related endobacteria (BRE) are rarely found and the known range of hosts is limited to Rhizopus spp. The phylogenetic divergence of BRE has recently expanded in other fungal groups such as Mortierellaceae spp. (Mortierellomycotina); however, it remains unexplored in Mucorales. Here, we found a thermotolerant mucoralean fungus obtained from a litter sample collected from Haha-jima Island in the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands,

Burkholderia mallei and Burkholderia pseudomallei, the etiologic agents responsible for glanders and melioidosis, respectively, are genetically and phenotypically similar and are category B biothreat agents. We used an in silico approach to compare the B. mallei ATCC 23344 and B. pseudomallei K96243 genomes to identify nucleotide sequences unique to B. mallei. Five distinct B. mallei DNA sequences and/or genes were identified and evaluated for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay development. Genomic DNAs from a collection of 31 B. mallei and 34 B. pseudomallei isolates, obtained from various

BACKGROUND: Conventional methods of agricultural pest control and crop fertilisation are unsustainable. To meet growing demand, we must find ecologically responsible means to control disease and promote crop yields. The root-associated microbiome can aid plants with disease suppression, abiotic stress relief, and nutrient bioavailability. The aim of the present work was to profile the community of bacteria, fungi, and archaea associated with the wheat rhizosphere and root endosphere in different conditions. We also aimed to use 13CO2 stable isotope probing (SIP) to identify microbes within the

Asthma, a chronic bronchial disorder prevalent in children/adolescents, is exacerbated under environmental conditions like dust storms. The current study investigated heavy metal levels, airborne bacteria, and serum IL-4/IL-8 in asthmatics during before/after dust storms in Iraq's Al-Anbar, Baghdad, and Kirkuk provinces. Airborne heavy metals were quantified by ICP-MS, serum cytokines by ELISA, and bacterial communities via metagenomics. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism (p < 0.05 significant). ICP-MS revealed considerably elevated post-storm concentrations of As, Ag, B,

BACKGROUND: The generalist and facultative symbioses are more common in nature and usually precede obligate and specialized ones. Although bacterial-fungal interactions are probably not an exception, little is known about the role that facultative bacterial-fungal symbioses may play in adaptation to occupying specific niches and changing environmental conditions. While Mucoromycota fungi are known to form close relationships with endohyphal bacteria, examples of more facultative interactions have been recently reported in this lineage as well. One example of facultative, yet endohyphal interac

Bacterial endosymbionts can provide benefits for their eukaryotic hosts, but it is often unclear if endosymbionts benefit from these relationships. The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum associates with three species of Paraburkholderia endosymbionts, including P. agricolaris and P. hayleyella. These endosymbionts can be costly to the host but are beneficial in certain contexts because they allow D. discoideum to carry prey bacteria through the dispersal stage. In experiments where no other species are present, P. hayleyella benefits from D. discoideum while P. agricolaris does not. Howeve

High arsenic concentration in groundwater is a severe environmental problem affecting human health, particularly in countries of South and South-East Asia. The Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) distributed within India and Bangladesh is a major arsenic-affected region where groundwater is the primary source of drinking water. Previous studies have indicated that members of the bacterial class Betaproteobacteria constitute a major fraction of the microbial community in many of the aquifers within this region. Bacteria belonging to this class are known to be involved in redox cycling of arsenic as well a

Nowadays, in the agricultural and agro-industrial sectors, there is increasing attention on the wine industry. The environmental impact of wine production, particularly in terms of residues generation, is a growing concern. Among generated residues, wine lees, rich in organic matter, phenols compounds, and with low pH, pose environmental challenges due to their disposal requirements. Despite their usage for biogas production and extraction of compounds, such as antioxidants, tartaric acid and ethanol, their potential in bioplastic production, specifically polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), remains

This study employed metabolomics to systematically investigate the dynamic changes of metabolites during the Probiotics-enzyme composite fermentation of corn stover. The results showed that the early fermentation stage was primarily driven by indigenous microorganisms. As fermentation progressed, the abundances of Firmicutes and Bacillus gradually increased, becoming the core functional microbiota, and their metabolic activities significantly lowered the feed pH. Additionally, Burkholderiaceae and Rhizobiaceae played pivotal roles in enhancing the crude protein content, while microorganisms su

Two Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile and short rod strains, designated 4D117T and ZD32-2T, were isolated from the forest soils. Strains 4D117T and ZD32-2T grew optimally at pH 4.0-6.5, 20-33 °C and pH 4.5-7.0, 33 °C, respectively, and both at 0.5% (w/v) NaCl concentration. Strains 4D117T and ZD32-2T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with P. acidiphila 7Q-K02T (99.1%) and P. ferrariae NBRC 106233T (98.7%), respectively. The genome size and G + C contents of strains 4D117T and ZD32-2T were 9,002,095 bp, 62.9% and 6,974,420 bp, 61.7%, respectively. The dDDH and ANI values b

The purpose of this review is to discuss the scientific literature on waterborne healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) published from 1990 to 2012. The review focuses on aquatic bacteria and describes both outbreaks and single cases in relation to patient characteristics, the settings and contaminated sources. An overview of diagnostic methods and environmental investigations is summarized in order to provide guidance for future case investigations. Lastly, on the basis of the prevention and control measures adopted, information and recommendations are given. A total of 125 reports were inc

Bacterial colonization of the cystic fibrosis (CF) airways is polymicrobial and several emerging microorganisms with a potential pathogenic role may be present. We report a case of three siblings with CF colonized by Pandoraea over a period of 10 years. Isolates identified as various non-fermentative Gram-negative bacilli from sputum cultures were successfully re-identified as Pandoraea vervacti (P. vervacti) by a combination of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization - time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and 16S rRNA and gyrB sequencing. Furthermore, the transcript expression

The use of sulfonamides (SAs) leads to residual environmental pollution. Bacteria play a crucial role in the degradation of SAs, and microbial consortium offers advantages over single bacterium. However, the complexity of the degradation processes and interaction mechanisms within such consortia remains a mystery. Here, a consortium named ACJ, comprising Leucobacter sp. HA-1, Bacillus sp. HC-1, and Gordonia sp. HAEJ-1, isolated from activated sludge in the wastewater treatment facilities of pharmaceutical plants, was identified as capable of degrading various SAs. Here, a pure culture of Leuco

Pitchers are the unique structures of carnivorous plants used for the trapping of insects and other small invertebrates. The digestion of captured prey here is assisted by the bacteria, which have been associated with pitchers. These bacterial communities can therefore expect to have a variety of plant beneficial functions. In this study, the bacterial isolate NhPBG1 from the pitcher of Nepenthes hamblack was screened for activity against Pythium aphanidermatum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, and Colletotrichum accutatum and was found to have the inhibitory activity towards all the te

BACKGROUND: The Malayan pangolin (Manis javanica) is a placental mammal and is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Most previous attempts to breed pangolins in captivity have met with little success because of dietary issues, infections, and other complications, although a previous study reported breeding pangolins in captivity to the third generation. In our previous pangolin genome sequencing data analysis, we obtained a considerable amount of bacterial DNA from a pregnant female Malayan pangolin (named "UM3"), which was likely infected by Paraburkhold

Seeds harbor microbial communities that contribute to enhancing the plant stress resilience. Using 16S rRNA gene profiling, this study characterized the bacterial microbiota of dry and pre-germinated seeds, and three compartments (soil, root, and leaf) from seedlings of wasabi ( Eutrema japonicum ). The seed-associated communities exhibited distinct characteristics in terms of the diversity metrics. SourceTracker analysis together with shared amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) between dry and pre-germinated seeds suggests that the seed microbiota may be partially transmitted to the seedling tis

Bacterial endosymbionts have been detected in some groups of plant-parasitic nematodes, but few cases have been reported compared to other groups in the phylum Nematoda, such as animal-parasitic or free-living nematodes. This study was performed on a wide variety of plant-parasitic nematode families and species from different host plants and nematode populations. A total of 124 nematode populations (previously identified morphologically and molecularly) were screened for the presence of potential bacterial endosymbionts using the partial 16S rRNA gene and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FI
