[Burn-out risk in health workers at Alzheimer's units].

On the basis of their personal experience, the Authors try to identify the salient aspects of the occupational stress and of the consequent burn-out syndrome in the health personnel of the Alzheimer Units of Lombardy. In these structures, the initial motivations, the emotional involvement, and the effort required by the job make the staff at high risk. The syndrome generally evolves through four stages (idealistic enthusiasm, stagnation, frustration, apathy) and may easily become a collective problem, with worsening of the quality of care and dispersion of economical resources. The occupationa

[Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (Lyell syndrome): a pathology for burn units].

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome) is a rare but very serious dermatological lesion, characterized by the sudden onset of high fever, signs of systemic toxicity and intense mucocutaneous exfoliation. Its pathophysiology is not yet well determined, although it is almost consensual the presence of an immunological basis. It appears usually as an answer to the taking of a given drug, and, in spite of being self-limited in the absence of complications, if not well managed it is associated with great morbidity and a high mortality, due, in most cases, to the developing of sepsis. Possible risk factors associated with burn wound colonization in burn units of Gaza strip hospitals, Palestine.

The epidemiological pattern and risk factors of burns and burn infections varies widely in different parts of the world. This study aims to determine the epidemiologic pattern of burn injuries and possible risk factors associated with burn infections in burn units of Gaza strip hospitals. A total of 118 patients were included in the study. The data collected included: patient age and gender, the causes, site, degree, and TBSA of the burns, as well as surgical operations, length of hospital stay, and microbiological profile of samples collected from patients, the environment, and from health ca

Identification of cutaneous functional units related to burn scar contracture development.

The development of burn scar contractures is due in part to the replacement of naturally pliable skin with an inadequate quantity and quality of extensible scar tissue. Predilected skin surface areas associated with limb range of motion (ROM) have a tendency to develop burn scar contractures that prevent full joint ROM leading to deformity, impairment, and disability. Previous study has documented forearm skin movement associated with wrist extension. The purpose of this study was to expand the identification of skin movement associated with ROM to all joint surface areas that have a tendency

Seasonal impact in burn profiles in a dedicated burn unit.

INTRODUCTION: The number of burns in Portugal remains considerably large and therefore constitutes a major public health problem. There is a shortage of studies describing the epidemiological and clinical impact of seasonality on burn centre admissions, particularly in high income countries. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included all patients (>18 years old) with acute burns admitted to a specialized Burn Center in Lisbon (Hospital São José) between 20 of September 2010 and 19 of September 2017 (7 years). Clinical data was obtained from electronic medical records. The patients were cat

Self-inflicted burns in the Irish National Burns Unit.

We carried out a review of self-inflicted burns presenting to the National Burns Unit in the Republic of Ireland. 87 self-inflicted burns were identified over a 12-year period accounting for 4.2% of total Burns Unit admissions. Patient demographics were identified. The majority of patients had a history of mental illness and deliberate self harm. We also examined the motivation behind the self-immolation, the total body surface area involved and the mortality rates.

Association Between Cutaneous Functional Units and Impairment Ratings After Burn Injury.

Burn injuries can cause lasting functional impairment, often requiring formal impairment ratings for workers' compensation cases. Cutaneous functional units (CFUs), which represent skin areas involved in single-joint motion, may better capture functional impact than TBSA, yet they are not included in current impairment rating guidelines. This study evaluated relationships between initial TBSA, initial CFUs, final scar CFUs, and impairment ratings, hypothesizing that scar burden measured by CFUs would be strongly associated with impairment. A retrospective review was conducted for 78 burn patie

Staphylococcal sepsis in a burns unit.

An outbreak of staphylococcal sepsis in a burns unit occurred between January 1976 and May 1978. Many patients and members of staff had boils, and a number of patients also developed septicaemia. Most of the boils in the early period of the trial and a large proportion of boils in patients during the later period yielded Staphylococcus aureus resistant to penicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin only (PTE), and were shown to be of phage type 95 in the early period while strains were phage typed. From blood cultures, most strains in the early period were of resistance pattern PTE and phage typ

Burn Injury Cutaneous Functional Units: Allocating Occupational Therapy Resources and Influencing Practice.

Burn injury severity is currently determined by estimating the total body surface area (TBSA) burned, but this method fails to capture the severity of subsequent functional consequences. Alternatively, cutaneous functional units (CFUs)--skin segments that accommodate for movement and commonly become contracted--can be used to more accurately estimate burn severity based on functional consequences. Bilateral hands account for 81.3% of the body's CFUs, though only account for 5% of TBSA. However, hand burn survivors can have worse physical outcomes (ie, contractures, deformities) after burn inju

Accuracy of burn size estimation in referred patients: A comparison between referring units and a Swedish National Burn Centre.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate estimation of burned total body surface area (TBSA%) is critical for fluid resuscitation, surgical planning, and referral decisions. International studies report frequent overestimation by non-experts, but Swedish data are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at Linköping Burn Centre, one of two national burn centres in Sweden. Between April 2024 and April 2025, real-time TBSA% estimates by referring physicians (non-experts) were compared with specialist assessments using the Lund & Browder chart. Bland-Altman plots and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests asses

Psychological impact of burns on children treated in a severe burns unit.

The aims of this study were to analyse the types of incident which cause children's burns, to investigate emotional reactions and associated behaviour afterward and to ascertain post-admission sequelae. A total of 83 young people took part, aged 1-17 years, with a mean 12% (range 1.5-47%, S.D. 8.0) total body surface area burned. According to the results from the psychometric scales and questionnaire used, most burns were the result of domestic incidents. Older children scored higher in anxiety. The most common behavioural reactions observed (attachment, wish to go back home) reflect the parti

Treatment of toxic epidermal necrolysis by burn units: another market or another threat?

A survey of burn care facilities in the United States has provided information regarding the treatment of toxic epidermal necrolysis and related diseases in burn units. The survey suggests that a disproportionate share (12% to 15%) of the projected number of cases of toxic epidermal necrolysis that occur annually are being transferred to the 2% of United States hospitals that have burn units. Because of the potential for a complex hospital course and extended length of stay, treatment of these patients in a prospective payment system poses a significant fiscal threat to hospitals with burn uni
