Comparison of postmortem butane distribution between two fatal butane poisoning cases.

Fatal accidents during butane abuse frequently occur in Japan and in many countries around the world. Although analytical data about butane concentration in postmortem samples is being accumulated, when using the data to determine the cause of death, careful interpretation is required because the gas is easily diffused. Two fatal butane poisoning cases were encountered, and butane quantification of autopsy samples obtained from left and right heart blood, femoral blood, kidney, liver, lung, brain and fatty tissues was performed. In both cases, butane concentration in the left heart blood was l

Quantitative determination of n-butane metabolites in three cases of butane sniffing death.

Butane is an addictive volatile substance like toluene. We report three forensic autopsy cases of sudden death that occurred while sniffing n-butane and isobutane from portable gas cartridges. n-Butane and isobutane were detected in all three cases. In cases 1-3, n-butane concentrations in heart blood were 54.3, 25.5, and 30.7μg/mL, respectively. These concentrations were considered fatal according to the previous reports. In addition, n-butane metabolites (2-butanol and 2-butanone) were detected in cases 1 and 3 but not in case 2. Blood levels of 2-butanol and 2-butanone were 6.5 and 1.8μg/mL

Photocatalytic Reconstruction of Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes to Oxygenated Bicycles.

Saturated benzene bioisosteres alleviate the constraints of aromatic planarity; however, oxygen-containing variants remain underdeveloped with limited positional diversity. Here we report a visible-light-driven oxygenation of bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes that encodes ring-open-close programmability to construct unique oxygenated bicycles, 5-oxa-2-oxobicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes (5-oxa-2-oxo-BCHex), bearing new exit vectors. Pyridine N-oxides act as oxene surrogates, effecting selective cleavage of the bridge C-C bond to generate β,γ-unsaturated 1,2-diketones that rapidly undergo a photoinduced intramolecula

Butane intoxication--three case reports.

Three cases of butane intoxication with fatal outcome are described. Butane was applied as a gaseous spray from the lighter refill can. With the exception of non-specific signs of asphyxiation such as tiny subepicardial and subpleural haemorrhages and lung oedema, haemorrhagic microruptures of the myocardial fibres were found. The authors have no plausible explanation regarding this development. Any mechanical damage of the myocardium can clearly be excluded.

Iridium-Catalyzed Enantioselective C(sp3)-H Borylation of Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes.

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) have attracted considerable interest in organic synthesis due to their versatile reactivity. However, the asymmetric synthesis of these strained systems remains a formidable challenge. We herein report an iridium-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3)-H borylation of BCBs, providing access to a range of optically active borylated BCBs with high enantioselectivities. We also demonstrated synthetic applications by downstream transformations, particularly in the stereoselective preparation of optically active multisubstituted cyclobutenes.

Regiodivergent Lewis acid catalysis of bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes with 2-naphthols.

Enhancing drug efficacy often involves increasing the proportion of sp3-hybridized carbons. Three-dimensional polycyclic frameworks, such as bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) and bicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes (BCHs), serve as excellent benzene bioisosteres, improving bioavailability and reducing toxicity while retaining biological activity. However, synthetic routes to 2D/3D-ring-fused BCHs via dearomatization are scarce, previously limited to cycloadditions of bicyclobutanes (BCBs) with indoles, bicyclic aza-arenes, or naphthalenes. Herein, we achieve Lewis acid-catalyzed dearomatization of BCBs with 2-n

Sudden death due to butane abuse - An overview.

Volatile Solvents Abuse (VSA) poses major health risks, especially for young people and those living in precarious socio-economic conditions. Such substances can in fact bring about psychoactive effects such as euphoria, and even lead to sudden death from cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory depression, myocardial infarction, laryngospasm, encephalopathy, and rhabdomyolysis. The present case report is centered around a 23-year-old man who died in prison due to inhalation of a cooker gas mixture (n-butane, propane, and isobutane) inside a plastic bag. External examination and autopsy showed non-spe

Neuropsychological, neuroimaging and autopsy findings of butane encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Butane is an aliphatic hydrocarbon used in various commercial products. While numerous reports of sudden cardiac-related deaths from butane inhalation have been described, butane-associated acute encephalopathy has rarely been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old man presented with cognitive dysfunction after butane gas inhalation. Neuropsychological test results showed impairments in verbal and visual memory, and frontal executive function. Diffusion weighted MRI revealed symmetric high-signal changes in the bilateral hippocampus and globus pallidus. FDG-PET demonstrated de

[Case report of butane intoxication with fatal outcome].

Forensic medical examiners know numerous cases of non-occupational intoxication (e.g. suicide, drug intoxication, household poisoning) but rarely encounter cases of occupational poisoning with household gases. Collection of forensic chemical facts testifying to the presence of saturated hydrocarbons in blood and other tissues is a challenging task. It hampers evaluation of their toxic effect on human brain for the purpose of forensic medical examination. A method is proposed for the analysis of biological materials allowing for the detection of natural alkanes, such as butane, along with recom

How fluorination collapses inversion barriers and increases electrophilicity in bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes.

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butane (BCB) is a highly strained framework whose reactivity arises from the predominant p-character of its central C-C bond. Using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, we show that progressive fluorination reduces BCB inversion barriers markedly from ∼64 kcal mol-1 in BCB to ∼3.6 kcal mol-1 in the perfluorinated analogue. NBO decomposition reveals that bridgehead substitution (C1/C3) maximizes hyperconjugative stabilization via interactions but introduces significant steric penalties, whereas C2/C4 substitution offers a more favorable balance

Modulating endergonic triplet photosensitization for cycloadditions between bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes and alkenes.

While energy transfer photocatalysis has recently been used in the synthesis of multisubstituted polycyclic alkanes as benzene bioisosteres, the use of highly reactive noble-metal and organo-photocatalysts often leads to rapid generation of diradical intermediates, triggering polymerization side reactions and limiting functional-group tolerance. Here we show that heteroleptic copper(I)-BINAP complexes containing bidentate (pyrazolyl)pyridine ligands act as effective triplet photosensitizers for cycloadditions between bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes and alkenes. These copper catalysts, with their extende

Complications following butane inhalation and flash fire.

Solvent inhalation is a well-documented form of drug abuse that can cause euphoria and hallucinations. Sudden death involving a volatile substance is most commonly caused by cardiac arrythmias, asphyxia, direct drug effects, and trauma. The victim in this paper suffered superficial partial thickness (12% total body surface area) burns from a flash fire that occurred when lighting a match after inhaling butane in an enclosed vehicle. The victim was admitted to the hospital for 2 days of observation but did not develop any respiratory symptoms under 2 days following her release. The victim died

Ru Single-Atom Anchored Zeolite for Selective Upcycling of Polyolefins Into Butanes.

Precisely upcycling polyolefins into specific compounds remains a formidable challenge in sustainable chemistry. Here, we report a spatially confined relay catalysis strategy enabled by Ru single-atom-anchored MOR zeolite (Ru1@MOR), which achieves a maximum C4 alkane selectivity of 63.4% and a production rate of 4516.4 mmol gRu -1 h-1 in the hydrocracking of low-density polyethylene, outperforming reported catalysts to date. Combined AC HAADF-STEM, solid‑state NMR, and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that isolated Ru1 sites are coordinatively situated on the inner surface o

HFIP-Promoted Strain-Release-Driven Functionalization of Azabicyclo[1.1.0]butanes with Heterocyclobutane Trichloroacetimidates.

We report the activation of oxetanyl, azetidinyl, and thietanyl trichloroacetimidates with 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), which rapidly couple with azabicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (ABB), following the Schmidt glycosylation strategy. The developed protocol is operationally simple, enabling easy access to a library of medicinally relevant 3,3-functionalized oxetanes, azetidines, and thietanes with N1/C3-functionalized ABB. The practicality of the strategy was demonstrated with more than 50 examples, including gram-scale synthesis. Control experiments revealed that both the trichloroacetimida

Acceleration of butane vapor nucleation by carbon dioxide gas.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is known to strongly accelerate nucleation of other gas phase components, such as water and toluene. The acceleration was attributed to the formation of transient heteromolecular dimers and referred to as the chaperon mechanism. In this work, we investigate this phenomenon for butane-CO2 gas mixtures with mass spectrometry in the post-nozzle flow of a Laval expansion at a temperature of 51 K and a pressure of 40 Pa. At moderate CO2 and butane concentrations, we observed an acceleration of butane nucleation by the chaperon mechanism, albeit only by a factor of about two

On the Synthesis of Chocolate Flavonoids (Propanols, Butanals) in the Interstellar Medium.

Complex organic molecules are ubiquitous in star- and planet-forming regions as well as on comets such as on 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, but their origins have remained largely unexplained until now. Here, we report the first laboratory detection of distinct C3 H8 O (propanol, methyl ethyl ether) and C4 H8 O (n-butanal, i-butanal) isomers formed within interstellar analog ices through interaction with ionizing radiation. This study reveals that complex organics with propyl (C3 H7 ) and butyl (C4 H9 ) groups can be synthesized easily in deep space and may act as key evolutionary tracers of a cos

Two cases of acute propane/butane poisoning in prison.

Hydrocarbon inhalation is seldom chosen as a means to commit suicide. This practice is exclusively a prerogative of the prison population; it is, however, only exceptionally found in this environment. The two cases of lethal inhalation of propane/butane gas observed by us over a very short time occurred in this context. Toxicologic analyses were performed by means of gas chromatography (head space) and revealed a propane/butane mixture in all specimens (heart blood, bile, and urine) except vitreous humor. Although fatal arrhythmia posthydrocarbon gas abuse is well known, the concentrations of

Explosive burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas.

Explosion burns during abusive inhalation of butane gas rarely occurred in the past, but recently it has become a social problem among groups of teenagers. This cause constitutes 1.6% of admissions due to flame burn at the burn unit of Hallym Medical Center. A retrospective review during a five-year period identified 48 patients. The male to female ratio was 3:1. The mean age of patients was 16 years and 8 months. The places where the accidents occurred were commonly bedrooms or motel rooms. There were nine group settings of 27 patients at the time of the accident. Inhalation injury (n = 12) w

Autoerotic accident by inhalation of propane-butane gas mixture.

We present a case of an accidental autoerotic death involving the inhalation of a propane-butane gas mixture, also known as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). A 19-year-old male was found dead in supine position in his bed in a residential accommodation one day after he was last seen alive. On a personal computer at the end of the bed, a pornographic movie was still running. On his left shoulder, an empty rubber balloon and on the bedside 2 empty "Kisag-Gas" cartridges were found.
