The C-reactive protein.

C-reactive protein (CRP) was identified in 1930 and was subsequently considered to be an "acute phase protein," an early indicator of infectious or inflammatory conditions. Since its discovery, CRP has been studied as a screening device for inflammation, a marker for disease activity, and as a diagnostic adjunct. Improved methods of quantifying CRP have led to increased application to clinical medicine. In the emergency department (ED), CRP must be interpreted in the clinical context; no single value can be used to rule in or rule out a specific diagnosis. We conclude that CRP has limited util

C-reactive protein and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein: an update for clinicians.

The measurement of C-reactive protein (CRP) using both standard and high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) assays is becoming common in clinical practice. This article addresses the causes of CRP elevation and the use of different CRP assays in internal medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, and oncology. We focus on the recent medical literature on the use of hs-CRP in cardiovascular disease risk stratification and management, including updated screening guidelines on the use of hs-CRP, such as those issued in 2009 by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. PentraSorb C-Reactive Protein: Characterization of the Selective C-Reactive Protein Adsorber Resin.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is well known as a general marker of inflammation. It furthermore represents a reliable risk factor for cardiac events and mediates tissue damage in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). It has been demonstrated that selective CRP depletion by extracorporeal apheresis in a porcine AMI model had beneficial effects on the infarcted area and the cardiac output. We therefore developed a novel adsorber for CRP apheresis from human plasma (PentraSorb CRP). It is intended for use in the clinic as therapy for patients suffering from AMI or other acute inflammatory diseases with e

Serum C-reactive protein and C-reactive protein derived markers in diabetic microvascular complications.

Chronic low-grade inflammation is a major contributor to both the onset and advancement of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and its associated microvascular complications, including diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, and peripheral neuropathy. This review aims to overview the roles of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), C-reactive protein (CRP), CRP-to-lymphocyte count ratio (CLR), and the CRP-to-albumin ratio (CAR) as biomarkers for assessing systemic inflammation and predicting the development and severity of diabetic chronic microvascular complications. Elevated levels of CRP and

C-reactive protein and ageing.

Increasing evidence shows that C-reactive protein (CRP) is not only an inflammatory biomarker but also an important risk factor associated with ageing-related diseases including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and kidney disease. Recent studies have demonstrated that CRP is pathogenic in a number of diseases including hypertensive cardiovascular and kidney complications, diabetic nephropathy, and acute and chronic kidney diseases. It is well known that CRP binds its receptor, CD32/CD64, to induce the process of inflammation by activating the NF-κB signalling pathway. I

C-reactive protein in dogs.

Serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) in dogs with various diseases or undergoing various procedures were measured by specific immunoassay. In 20 healthy dogs from various sources, values were all less than 5 mg/L, but in 22 healthy dogs from a single source, values ranged from less than 5 mg/L in 14 dogs and from 8 to 67 mg/L in 8 dogs. Increased concentrations of serum CRP were attained 24 hours after injection of casein (n = 9; median 188 mg/L), ovariohysterectomy (n = 11; median, 144 mg/L), or elective, nonacute orthopedic surgery (n = 10; median, 83 mg/L). C-reactive protein-mediated dementia.

Loss of memory is the main feature of dementia, accompanied by personality changes. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent type of dementia globally and a major contributor to disability and mortality in older individuals. Most notably, the neurological damage caused by AD is irreversible, but the current market still lacks effective medications for the treatment of dementia. Numerous research studies have indicated that the inflammatory response is significantly involved in the development of cognitive impairment, and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in healthy people increase

C-reactive protein and nutrition.

High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a proven method to better predict the cardiovascular risk and target therapeutic interventions. Serum concentrations of hsCRP were measured in an adult apparently healthy population aged 19-75 years of different nutrition: a vegetarian group (lacto- and lacto-ovo-vegetarians who consumed plant food, dairy products and eggs) and a group of non-vegetarians (general population) on traditional mixed diet. The average hsCRP concentration was significantly reduced in the vegetarian group (0.72 +/- 0.07 vs 1.62 +/- 0.12 mg/l) with no risk values >3 mg/l

C-reactive protein in measles.

Seventy-two children with early measles (1st-3rd day of rash), presenting at two centres in Santiago, Chile, were classified as having mild ('ordinary measles', n = 50), or moderate to severe measles ('primarily severe measles', n = 22). The level of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was determined by nephelometry from a finger prick sample. The mean CRP value in ordinary measles, 19 mg/l, was significantly lower (P less than 0.001) than in primarily severe measles where the mean CRP was 65 mg/l. During late measles (5th-8th day of rash), the mean CRP was 19 mg/l if the child recovered uneventful

C-reactive protein in pediatrics.

CRP levels have been found to be helpful in differential diagnosis and in following the clinical course and response to treatment of various disorders. Of particular interest is their value in the diagnosis of serious bacterial infections in neonates, such as meningitis, septicemia, and osteomyelitis. While no individual has been reported to be deficient in CRP, it is possible that abnormalities of CRP synthesis and function will be found. As increasing knowledge of the role of CRP accumulates, it is conceivable that CRP may acquire some therapeutic value. Increasing availability of rapid quan

Inflammation, C-reactive protein, and atherothrombosis.

Atherothrombosis of the coronary and cerebral vessels is understood to be a disorder of inflammation and innate immunity, as well as a disorder of lipid accumulation. From a vascular biology perspective, the processes of cellular adhesion, monocyte and macrophage attachment, and transmigration of immune cells across the endothelium are crucial steps in early atherogenesis and in the later stages of mature plaque rupture, particularly the transition of unstable plaque at the time of acute thrombosis. There is abundant clinical evidence demonstrating that many biomarkers of inflammation are elev

C-reactive protein: a critical review.

We have reviewed the literature to determine the value of C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of conditions. CRP levels are of value in 6 clinical situations: (a) monitoring the response to antibiotic treatment in patients with known bacterial infections, (b) in obstetric patients with premature rupture of membranes, a rise in CRP can give early warning of intrauterine infections, (c) differentiation between active disease and infections in patients with systemic lupus and ulcerative colitis where the level of response to active disease has bee

C-reactive protein and bacterial meningitis.

We have studied prospectively the C-reactive protein values in the cerebrospinal fluid of 54 patients with bacterial meningitis, tuberculous meningitis, and severe malarial infection and convulsions without infections of the central nervous system. CSF CRP above 1 mg/l was observed in 23 out of 28 patients with bacterial meningitis (sensitivity of 82%). The specificity was 73% at the 1 mg/l level. Five out of 19 patients with severe malarial infection had CSF CRP levels above 1 mg/l. Two patients with TB meningitis were also studied. Both of them had CSF CRP above 1 mg/l. Five patients with fe

Therapeutic Lowering of C-Reactive Protein.

In the blood of healthy individuals C-reactive protein (CRP) is typically quite scarce, whereas its blood concentration can rise robustly and rapidly in response to tissue damage and inflammation associated with trauma and infectious and non-infectious diseases. Consequently, CRP plasma or serum levels are routinely monitored in inpatients to gauge the severity of their initial illness and injury and their subsequent response to therapy and return to health. Its clinical utility as a faithful barometer of inflammation notwithstanding, it is often wrongly concluded that the biological actions o

C-reactive protein (CRP)-lowering agents.

C-reactive protein (CRP) plays a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. It is a marker and predictor of cardiovascular disease. CRP possesses numerous cardiovascular effects (clotting, generation of oxygen radicals, increase in the expression of adhesion molecules and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, plaque destabilization) that could result in cardiovascular disease. This review describes the effects of various cardiovascular drugs on the levels of CRP in health and disease. Cyclooxygenase inhibitors (aspirin, rofecoxib, celecoxib), platelet aggregation inhibitors (clopidogrel,

Serum and CSF levels of CRP were measured by radial immunoassay in 99 subjects consisting of 20 controls, 34 pyogenic meningitis (PM), 21 tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and 24 viral encephalitis (VE). There was significant difference in the CRP levels (p less than 0.01) depending on the type of disease in both serum and CSF. The initial serum and CSF levels of CRP in patients with TBM was intermediate between those of PM and VE and were found to be significantly (p less than 0.001) low when compared with three days post treatment levels in children with PM. Both serum and CSF-CRP levels were sig
