CD-ROM prototype applications within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been actively involved in examining the benefits of Compact Disc Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) to its operations. Approximately twenty VA titles either have been produced or are scheduled for production by Summer of 1991. Both textual and database CDs have been prototyped. Several of the CDs have been integrated directly into the VA's MUMPS-based hospital information systems. Titles which contain patient information employ the Data Encryption Standard (DES) for sensitive information. A related project involves the installation of a system which allows co

The multimedia CD ROM: an innovative teaching tool for endoscopic sinus surgery.

The recent explosive growth in the use of endoscopic techniques in the performance of surgical procedures has created an important need for educational materials on this subject. However, limitations of currently available teaching tools frustrate the user and hamper the teaching and spread of these procedures. To improve on currently available methods, we developed a CD ROM video atlas of techniques in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The multimedia CD ROM video atlas combines the best features of the surgical atlas with conventional videotapes. The component steps of procedures in ESS are pre

Feasibility and acceptability of CD-ROM-based cognitive-behavioural treatment for binge-eating disorder.

We compared preliminary feasibility and acceptability of CD-ROM-delivered CBT for overweight individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED) to 10 weekly group CBT sessions (Group) and to a waiting list control (WL). Attrition was numerically greater in the Group than the CD-ROM condition; although only Group differed significantly from WL in dropout rates. Those in the CD-ROM condition reported continued use of their CD-ROM after treatment. Also, the majority of WL participants elected to receive CD-ROM over Group treatment at the end of the waiting period. Preliminarily, no significant differen

Development and evaluation of an interactive tobacco cessation CD-ROM educational program for dental students.

Dentists and dental hygienists can be effective in providing advice and brief counseling to tobacco-using patients. However, lack of training in effective interventions is a barrier to incorporating tobacco cessation interventions into routine practice. After we developed and evaluated an interactive CD-ROM tobacco cessation training program, we evaluated the effect of using the program on the knowledge level and attitudes of forty-seven third-year dental students and thirty dental hygiene students and also obtained their opinions of program quality and utility. Significant change was observed

Development and testing of a CD-ROM based tutorial for nursing students: getting ready for HIPAA.

The purpose of this study was to develop and test a CD-ROM tutorial for nursing students to educate them on how the rules and regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) affect them as they engage in patient care activities in hospitals. The project was completed in two parts, the first of which was production of a stand-alone, audio lecture, image and text self-instruction on CD-ROM to distribute to students as they began their clinical experience. The second part compared the effectiveness of learning the HIPAA content via CD-ROM to a text-directed, self st

Evaluation of the "Sunny Days, Healthy Ways" sun safety CD-ROM program for children in grades 4 and 5.

Computer-based sun safety instruction has many advantages that may be attractive to health educators in schools. An educational multimedia computer program on sun safety was produced on CD-ROM for children in grades 4 and 5, which was based on the "Sunny Days, Healthy Ways" sun safety curriculum (SDHW). Its effects on children's sun safety knowledge, attitudes and behaviour were evaluated with 162 students in 8 fourth and fifth grade classes in a randomized pretest-posttest 2 x 2 factorial design. Children interacting with the CD-ROM program showed significant improvements in knowledge (p = 0.

Auscultation of the heart: a trial of classroom teaching versus computer-based independent learning.

Declining skills in auscultation of the heart prompted an evaluation of teaching methods for medical students. A comparison of classroom teaching and computer-aided independent learning of auscultation was carried out with two groups of approximately 20 second-year medical students. Both groups used approximately 20 recorded normal and abnormal heart sounds and murmurs, chosen to illustrate learning issues. For the classroom group a cardiologist presented each case through multiple stethophones and led the discussion. The individual study group used a new CD-ROM collection of cases and recordi

Effect of Kinetic Control Training and McKenzie's Approach on Pain and Mobility in Cervical Derangement Syndrome: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical derangement syndrome (CDS), a form of mechanical neck pain, arises from poor posture, repetitive stress, and segmental dysfunction, resulting in discomfort, restricted cervical mobility, and reduced functional capacity. The study focuses on changes associated with CDS, particularly range of motion (ROM), pain, and functional disability. The study aims to find the effect of kinetic control training (KCT) and the McKenzie approach on CDS. The McKenzie approach emphasizes symptom centralization through repeated directional movements, while KCT focuses on restoring movement ef
