[Expression of the OKM5 antigen (CD36) in normal keratinocytes and inflamed mucosa].

In 62 oral mucosa biopsies of different localization and diagnoses, immunohistochemically investigated with the APAAP technique, the OKM5 expression on keratinocytes was connected with the epithelial keratinization. In parakeratotic epithelia, an obvious CD36 upregulation was detectable. Surprisingly, there was no correlation between neither the state of inflammation nor the diagnoses and the OKM5 keratinocyte expression; the oral localization by itself appeared to be responsible for the CD36 expression.

Anti-CD36 autoantibodies in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and other thrombotic disorders: identification of an 85 kD form of CD36 as a target antigen.

The presence of anti-CD36 antibodies in plasma of patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia without/with thrombosis (HIT/HITT) has been examined by immunoblots, and a monoclonal antibody capture assay, the platelet-associated IgG characterization assay (PAICA). Results with PAICA showed that 73% (8/11) of patients with TTP were positive, and 71% (10/14) by immunoblots. With ITP, 20% (6/30) were positive by PAICA and 19% (3/16) by immunoblots; HIT, 30% (3/10) were positive by PAICA and 60% (6/10) by i

Expression of CD36 (OKM5) antigen on epidermal cells in normal and diseased skin.

The expression of the CD36 (OKM5) antigen was studied with the PAP technique on sections of skin from healthy subjects and of normal and diseased skin from patients with various skin diseases. In specimens from healthy subjects the antigen was found on vascular and perivascular structures and in some cases it was seen on cells of the acrosyringium. A net-like pattern of CD36 was observed in the upper part of the stratum spinosum in skin lesions of patients with psoriasis, lichen planus, pityriasis rosea, morbilliform drug reactions, necrobiosis lipoidica, lichen amyloidosus, Darier's disease a

CD36 is differentially expressed on B cell subsets during development and in responses to antigen.

Of a number of mAbs made by immunization with sort-purified marginal zone (MZ) B cells, one was shown to recognize the mouse scavenger receptor CD36. Although CD36 is expressed by most resting MZ B cells and not by follicular and B1 B cells, it is rapidly induced on follicular B cells in vitro following TLR and CD40 stimulation. In response to T-independent and T-dependent Ag challenge, we found that CD36 was expressed on IgM+ plasma cells, but down-regulated on isotype-switched plasma cells in vivo. Although development, localization, and phenotype of MZ B cells in CD36-/- mice appeared norma

CD36 (OKM5) antigen expression on human mucosal epithelia is associated with keratinization type.

The glycoprotein CD36 functions as a thrombospondin receptor and is expressed on a variety of cell types, including platelets, monocyte/macrophages, and endothelial cells. In human skin, the presence of CD36 on keratinocytes was initially found in lesional areas of T-cell mediated inflammatory dermatoses. Controversy still exists on the interpretation of this expression as an inflammatory or differentiation-associated marker. So far, only limited data are available on CD36 expression in oral epithelia. The present immunohistochemical study was therefore performed to determine the presence of C

Improvement of Anti-CD36 Antibody Detection via Monoclonal Antibody Immobilization of Platelet Antigens Assay by Using Selected Monoclonal Antibodies.

Antibodies against human CD36 are responsible for several immune-mediated disorders. The detection of anti-CD36 antibodies using the standard monoclonal antibody (mAb) immobilization of platelet antigens (MAIPA) assay is hampered by a high frequency of false-negative results, most likely due to competitive inhibition of the mAb used as the capture antibody. We generated a panel of mouse mAbs against CD36 and seven hybridomas (GZ-3, GZ-13, GZ-70, GZ-143, GZ-413, GZ-507, and GZ-608), which were selected for MAIPA assays, as they reacted with mouse and human CD36. Fourteen anti-CD36 sera were ass

Folic acid protects against Toxoplasma gondii antigen-induced vascular injury via the CD36-autophagy-lysosomal axis.

Whether and how pathogen-derived antigens themselves drive vascular injury remains an unresolved question in infection biology and cardiovascular research. Using murine model and human pluripotent stem cell-derived vascular organoids (VOs), we demonstrate that Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection or exposure to its soluble tachyzoite antigens (STAg) compromises vascular integrity, leads to the impairment of endothelium, and heightens inflammation. Mechanistically, STAg upregulates the scavenger receptor CD36 on endothelial cells (ECs), reprogramming them toward a scavenger endothelial cell

Epitopic heterogeneity of the CD36 antigen expressed by normal and neoplastic endothelial cells. An immunohistochemical study with a novel monoclonal antibody 8C9.

Phenotypic and functional heterogeneity of endothelial cells (ECs) is being recognized with increasing frequency. Here we report a novel murine monoclonal antibody (MoAb), named 8C9, that detects a unique epitope on the leukocyte differentiation antigen CD36 (platelet glycoprotein IV or IIIb) expressed by both normal and neoplastic ECs. In immunohistochemical and flow-cytometric studies, 8C9-immunoreactivity was detected on capillary ECs, adipocytes, monocytes, platelets and a human monocytoid cell line U-937, which are known to express the CD36 antigen. Blocking experiments using U-937 cells

Fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia due to anti-CD36 antibodies: antibody evaluations by CD36-transfected cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Isoantibodies against CD36 (platelet glycoprotein 4), developed in Type I CD36-deficient mothers are frequently reported as the cause of fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia in the Asian population. Therefore, further detailed characterization of anti-CD36-mediated fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia is warranted. Here, we report the characterization of a patient with fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia in a Taiwanese family caused by anti-CD36 isoantibodies using a novel antigen-capture method. Toxoplasma gondii in CD36 -/- mice shows lethal infection and poor immunization with probable macrophage immune defects.

Experimental toxoplasmosis is an excellent model for adaptive immune response. Gamma-irradiated tachyzoites or soluble tachyzoite antigen extracts (STag) induce protection against experimental toxoplasmosis in mice. Scavenger receptors recognize irradiated proteins, promote their entry into cells, and lead to antigen presentation. CD36 is a specific scavenger receptor involved in intracellular transport of free fatty acid (FFA), cellular recycling, and intracellular trafficking in lipid rafts outside the lysosomal pathways. CD36 is also associated with an altered immune response, as CD36-/- mi

Myeloid CD36 deficiency alleviates hepatic fibrosis by promoting adaptive immunity of macrophages.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatic fibrosis presents a major global health challenge, yet effective preventive and therapeutic strategies remain limited. Hepatic macrophages, which play a dual role in fibrosis progression, are central to understanding its pathogenesis. This study aimed to elucidate how macrophage lipid metabolism mediated by CD36 regulates immune function and fibrosis development. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We demonstrated that macrophages engulf lipids secreted by hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) via the CD36 receptor, resulting in enhanced lipid peroxidation, ferroptosis, and diminished

Evidence that CD36 is expressed on red blood cells and constitutes a novel blood group system of clinical importance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Polymorphic molecules expressed on the surface of certain blood cells are traditionally categorized as blood groups and human platelet or neutrophil antigens. CD36 is widely considered a platelet antigen (Naka) and anti-CD36 can cause foetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) in CD36-negative pregnant women. CD36 is used as a marker of differentiation in early erythroid culture. During the experimental culture of CD34+ cells from random blood donors, we observed that one individual lacked CD36. We sought to investigate this observation further and determine

A case of platelet transfusion refractoriness due to anti-CD36 with a successful treatment outcome.

Antibodies (Abs) against antigens on platelets (PLTs), including glycoprotein IV (CD36), can cause PLT refractoriness. Transfusing PLTs to patients with anti-CD36 is challenging because of the rarity of CD36-negative (CD36-) donors and the possibility of additional HLA Abs. We report a case of PLT refractoriness due to anti-CD36 and HLA Abs. A 21-year-old man (group O, D+) with assumed drug-induced aplastic anemia received multiple PLT transfusions and developed severe PLT refractoriness. He was found to have anti-CD36 as well as HLA class I Abs, with a CD36- phenotype on both PLTs and monocyt
