OBJECTIVE: Neurosarcoidosis affects 5%-10% of patients with sarcoidosis. CD4+ /CD8+ ratio in bronchoalveolar lavage is included in diagnostic routine for pulmonary sarcoidosis. Previously, it has been suggested that a cerebrospinal fluid CD4+ /CD8+ ratio ≥5 can be an aid in diagnosing neurosarcoidosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 66 cases where neurosarcoidosis was a differential diagnosis and hence subjected to the analysis of CSF CD4+ /CD8+ ratio by flow cytometry.

The Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA) is a widely used method for screening syphilis. We report our experience with six elderly (age 72.4 +/- 8.3 years) patients with syphilis, whose TPHA was negative. Their cardiolipin (RPR) and absorbed fluorescence treponemal tests (FTA-ABS) were positive. TPHA-negative patients with syphilis were compared with TPHA-positive syphilitics by immunological analysis. BACKGROUND: The relationship between oral lesions arising from HIV infection and CD4/CD8 cell ratios is of relevance in clinical assessment of immune suppression.
OBJECTIVE: To correlate the prevalence of oral manifestations arising from HIV infection and the levels of CD4/CD8 cell ratios.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.
SUBJECTS: Two hundred and seven HIV-infected patients in medical wards were recruited in the study.
RESULTS: Seventy eight (37.7%) were male and 129 (62.3%) female, with an age range of 18-73 years (mean=34.81 years).

BACKGROUND: The persistence of an inverted CD4/CD8 ratio has been extensively associated with the increased morbimortality of chronic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects. PURPOSE: Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic inflammatory disorder involving multiple organs, and ocular manifestation (represented by granulomatous uveitis) is one of the common features. All of the patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), whom we studied, exhibited abnormalities in lymphocyte subsets. We used two-color immunofluorescence flow cytometry to examine the lymphocyte subset alterations. WG group showed a decrease in the percentage of CD4+ cells and an increase of CD8+ cells. Within the NK cell family, functionally unidentified CD8+57+ cells were markedly increased in number. The disproportion of these lymphocyte subsets (CD4+ decreases, CD8+57+ increases) was similar to that seen in Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and AIDS related complex (ARC).
