Patterns of nodal metastases, biological behaviour and prognosis of canine mast cell tumours of the pinna: A multi-institutional retrospective study.

Canine cutaneous mast cell tumours (cMCTs) of the pinna have been associated with an aggressive biological behaviour, although data remain scarce. The knowledge acquired over the past years on histologic gradings, and the value of lymph node (LN) staging, may help in better characterizing this anatomical presentation. The first aim was to describe the frequency, location, and histologic appearance of LN metastases in cMCT of the pinna. A second aim was to evaluate prognosis. Medical records of dogs with cMCT of the pinna, that underwent tumour and sentinel (SLN) or regional LN (RLN) excision,

Cutaneous mastocytosis in 8 young dogs and review of literature.

Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is a rare condition in young dogs characterized by multicentric cutaneous proliferation of neoplastic mast cells. Clinical data from 8 dogs that met inclusion criteria (age of onset less than 1.5 years, greater than 3 lesions) were obtained via a standardized survey. Biopsy samples were classified by the Kiupel/Patnaik grading systems and analyzed for c-KIT mutations. The median age of onset was 6 months (range: 2-17 months). Dogs had 5 to more than 50 lesions characterized as nodules, plaques, and papules. Seven dogs were pruritic. Clinical staging in 2 dogs did no

Endothelial-cell-mediated mechanism of coronary microvascular dysfunction leading to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Although the prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is growing worldwide, its complex pathophysiology has yet to be fully elucidated, and multiple hypotheses have all failed to produce a viable target for therapeutic action or provide effective treatment. Cardiac remodeling has long been considered an important mechanism of HFpEF. Strong evidence has been reported over the past years that coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), manifesting as structural and functional abnormalities of coronary microvasculature, also contributes to the evolution of HFpEF. However

Characterization of the central motor conduction time in a large cohort of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is the most common subtype of hereditary ataxia. Few studies reported the CMCT features in SCA3, but with inconsistent findings. So far, CMCT in SCA3 remains largely unknown. METHODS: This study included 86 SCA3 patients and 80 healthy controls. Motor-evoked potentials were recorded bilaterally from upper and lower limbs muscles by TMS using a double-cone coil attached to CCY-IA magnetic stimulator. CMCT was determined using F wave and paravertebral magnetic stimulation (PMS). The statistical analyses were performed using R software. RESULTS

Cyclodextrin-grafted chitosan hydrogels for controlled drug delivery.

A series of β-cyclodextrin-grafted carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels (CD-g-CMCs) were prepared from carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and carboxymethyl β-chitosan (CMCD) using a water-soluble carbodiimide as a crosslinker in the presence of N-hydroxysuccinimide. Details of the hydrogel structures were determined via FTIR and solid-state NMR spectroscopic analyses. Increasing the feed ratio of CMCD to CMC in the reaction mixture led to an increase in CD grafting within the gel networks comprising CMC; this was confirmed by SEM observations and rheological analysis of the swollen hydrogels. The prepar

Primary preputial reconstruction following surgical excision of cutaneous mast cell tumours without penile amputation in eight dogs.

CASE HISTORY: Medical records from a single referral hospital (Davies Veterinary Specialists, Hitchin, UK) were reviewed to identify dogs (n = 8) with preputial cutaneous mast cell tumours (CMCT) that underwent surgical excision and primary preputial reconstruction, preserving the penis and urethra, after clients declined alternatives such as penile amputation and urethrostomy, from June 2017-June 2022. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Tumours had a median diameter of 21.5 (min 15, max 30) mm, were located cranioventrally (3/8), caudoventrally (1/8), laterally (2/8) and dorsally (2/8) relative to the prepu

Cortical excitability changes in patients of vascular parkinsonism with cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular parkinsonism (VaP), type of lower body parkinsonism, occurs in relation to ischemic cerebrovascular disease. It can be associated with cognitive impairment. We aimed to study the cortical excitability changes in these patients using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). METHODS: We included 20 patients with VaP and 22 healthy controls (HC). All subjects underwent TMS over left motor cortex with recording of resting motor threshold (RMT), central motor conduction time (CMCT), short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), intracortical facilitation (ICF), contralater

An efficient route for the synthesis of a Tin(II) substituted carbodiimide from a diazo compound.

The reaction of beta-diketiminate substituted tin(II) chloride, LSnCl (1; L = HC{(CMe)(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)N)}(2)), with the lithium salt of trimethylsilyl diazomethane (LiC(N(2))SiMe(3)) is described. In the course of the reaction, the exclusive formation of tin(II) substituted carbodiimide LSnNCNSiMe(3) (2) is observed in good yield. This reaction occurs at room temperature without any side products. Furthermore, we reacted diiron nonacarbonyl, Fe(2)(CO)(9), with compound 2 to confirm the carbodiimide skeleton (N=C=N) without rearrangement. The latter reaction leads to the tin(II) coordinate i

Diagnostic and prognostic significance of preoperative evoked potential tests in degenerative cervical myelopathy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Decompression surgery is a treatment option for patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). Surgical decisions primarily depend on clinical symptoms and radiological examinations. The diagnostic and prognostic significance of evoked potential tests for surgical outcomes in patients with DCM has not been thoroughly examined. PURPOSE: To identify the diagnostic and prognostic significance of preoperative evoked potential tests in patients with DCM who underwent decompression surgery. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective observational study. PATIENT SAMPLE: One

Abnormal cortical excitability in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 12.

BACKGROUND: Spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 (SCA-12) is an uncommon autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia characterized by action tremors in the upper limbs, dysarthria, head tremor, and gait ataxia. We aimed to evaluate the motor cortical excitability in patients with SCA-12 using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). METHODS: The study was done in the department of Neurology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. Nine patients with SCA-12 (2 females) and 10 healthy controls (2 females) were included in the study. TMS was performed in all the sub

CT features of cutaneous and subcutaneous canine mast cell tumors and utility of conventional and indirect lymphography to detect clinically unknown mast cell tumors and to map the sentinel lymph nodes.

Computed tomography is frequently used to stage canine mast cell tumors (MCTs). The aims of this prospective, observational study were to describe the CT features of MCTs, to evaluate the performance of CT in detecting additional or incidental MCTs, to distinguish between cutaneous (cMCT) or subcutaneous (scMCT) MCTs, and to identify one or multiple sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) by indirect CT lymphography (ICTL). Seventy-two dogs affected by 111 MCTs were included. The recorded parameters were: shape, size, attenuation (Hounsfield units [HU]), location (cutaneous or subcutaneous), and presence

The Role of Magnetic Transcranial Stimulation in the Diagnosis and Post-Surgical Follow-Up of Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) consists of spinal cord damage due to its compression through the cervical spine. The leading cause is degenerative. The diagnosis is clinical, and the therapeutic approach is usually surgical. Confirmation of the diagnostic suspicion is done by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, this test lacks functional information of the spinal cord, the abnormality of which may precede involvement in neuroimaging. Neurophysiological examination using somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) allows for an evaluation o

Cross-linking between cytochrome c3 and flavodoxin from Desulfovibrio gigas.

Tetraheme cytochrome c3 (13 kDa) and flavodoxin (16 kDa), are small electron transfer proteins that have been used to mimic, in vitro, part of the electron-transfer chain that operates between substract electron donors and respiratory electron acceptors partners in Desulfovibrio species (Palma, N., Moura, I., LeGall, J., Van Beeumen, J., Wampler, J., Moura, J. J. G. (1994) Biochemistry 33, 6394-6407). The electron transfer between these two proteins is believed to occur through the formation of a specific complex where electrostatic interaction is the main driving force (Stewart, D., LeGall, J
