Exposure to heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury is of immediate environmental concern. The present study was aimed at establishing a direct relationship between heavy metal poisoning and thyroid dysfunction. Cadmium and mercury treatment at LD50 levels resulted in severe thyrotoxicosis in the rabbit. Within 24 h of intramuscular administration of cadmium chloride 15 mg.kg-1 body weight (bw) and mercury chloride 20 mg.kg-1 bw, thyroid peroxidase activity increased significantly over the control with a concomitant rise in the triiodothyronine (T3) titre. On the other hand, there was a remar

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of cadmium toxicity on rat embryogenesis when exposed to other heavy metal citrates. Despite the variety of scientific publications discussing the influence of cadmium on mammalian postnatal development, the effect of this metal on embryogenesis has not yet been sufficiently studied. In this experimental study, cadmium chloride was administered to experimental pregnant female Wistar rats at a daily dose of 1.0 mg/kg. Rats were allocated at random into groups receiving either cadmium chloride alone or additional zinc citrate, cerium citrate,

Cadmium is a known industrial and environmental pollutant. It causes hepatotoxicity upon acute administration. Features of cadmium-induced acute hepatoxicity encompass necrosis, apoptosis, peliosis and inflammatory infiltration. Gadolinium chloride (GdCl3) may prevent cadmium-induced hepatotoxicity by suppressing Kupffer cells. The effect of GdCl3 pretreatment on a model of acute cadmium-induced liver injury was investigated. Male Wistar rats 4-5 months old were injected intraperitoneally with normal saline followed by cadmium chloride (CdCl2; 6.5 mg/kg) or GdCl3 (10 mg/kg) followed by CdCl2 (

Due to anthropogenic activities, heavy metals still represent a threat for various trophic levels. If aquatic animals are exposed to heavy metals, we can obviously observe considerable toxicity. It is well known that organisms treated with heavy metals synthesize low molecular mass compounds rich in cysteine. In this work the effects of cadmium chloride (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 mg/L) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was investigated. We determined cadmium content in tissue of muscle, liver and kidney by atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization and content of metallothion

Cadmium (Cd), a known food pollutant, has been demonstrated in numerous studies to induce neurological damage. The pathogenic mechanisms of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) and cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) are generally attributed to the induction of oxidative stress and apoptosis. Nevertheless, the extent to which these two cadmium compounds exhibit differential concentration-dependent neurotoxic effects, as well as the specific underlying mechanisms involved, remain to be elucidated. In this study, the differential neurotoxic effects and underlying mechanisms were explored in PC12 cells which were treate

Three groups of rats (B-D) were given various daily doses of CdCl2 (0.5-2 mg Cd/kg) continuously or in intervals during time periods of 1-8 weeks. Another group of animals (A) were kept untreated. At the end of the period, selected subgroups of groups A-D were given a single subcutaneous injection of 109Cd-metallothionein (109CdMT) 0.05 or 0.4 mg Cd/kg ("challenge dose"). Subsequently, urinary creatinine, protein, Cd, 109Cd and MT and kidney cortex Cd, 109Cd and MT were determined. In group A (no long term pretreatment), an increased proteinuria was observed after the rats had received the low

This study assessed the effect of quercetin (QE) on cadmium chloride (CdCl2) - induced testicular toxicity, as well as the effect of withdrawal of CdCl2 treatment on same. Thirty male Wistar rats aged 10 weeks old and weighing 270-300g were assigned into 5 groups and used for this study. Rats in groups 1-4 were administered vehicle, CdCl2 (5mg/kg bwt), CdCl2+QE (5mg/kg bwt and 20mg/kg bwt, respectively) or QE (20mg/kg bwt) orally for 4 weeks. Group 5 rats received CdCl2, with 4 weeks recovery period. Results showed that cadmium accumulated in serum, testis and epididymis, decreased body weight

Acute exposure to inorganic cadmium produces hepatotoxicity, but no renal injury. In contrast, chronic exposure to Cd produces nephrotoxic effects. However, a single injection of cadmium bound to metallothionein (CdMT) can produce nephrotoxicity similar to that seen with chronic exposure to Cd. It is generally thought that CdMT is nephrotoxic because more CdMT than CdCl2 distributes to the kidney. To test this hypothesis, the toxic effects and distribution of Cd were compared after iv injection of CdMT and CdCl2 to mice. CdMT increased urinary excretion of glucose, and protein indicating renal

The effect of cadmium chloride on the integrity of the endothelium of isolated bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) corneas was examined by spectrophotometric analysis of corneal uptake of the vital stain Janus green and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The uptake of Janus green by the endothelium was dose related between 1.0 and 100.0 microM CdCl2. The effect of cadmium was significantly attenuated by the calcium channel blocker SKF 96365 and was augmented by the calcium ionophore A23187, indicating that cadmium influx through calcium channels is an important determinant of its cellular effect.

Low molecular weight cadmium-binding proteins were studed in lung tissue from rabbits exposed to aerosols of CdCl2. Lungs obtained from animals exposed by inhalation to aerosols of 800 or 1600 micrograms/m3 CdCl2 for 2-hr periods/day, every other day for a 5-day period, were found to contain at least three low molecular weight cadmium-binding proteins, two of which were similar electrophoretically and spectrally to rabbit liver metallothionein. The third protein(s), which accounted for the majority of the cadmium in the soluble fraction of the tissue, did not bind to an anionic exchange gel an

Three feeding studies were conducted with young mice to compare the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) occurring in oyster tissue to that of cadmium chloride (CdCl2). In the first experiment, 5 or 20 ppm dietary Cd as CdCl2 depressed blood hematocrit and hemoglobin concentrations, which were further depressed by the addition of up to 3% oyster to the diet. In the second experiment, 1.5 or 3.0 ppm dietary Cd as CdCl2 did not influence hematopoiesis after 14 days exposure. The percent of the Cd dose retained in the kidney was inversely related to dosage level, directly related in the liver and femur and u

It has previously been reported that cadmium (Cd) induces renal lesions only after sequestration by endogenous metallothionein (MT), and not in the form of simple salts. However, in this report we detail findings of acute CdCl2-induced renal lesions in the Syrian hamster, which appear to be species specific as neither rats nor mice showed such lesions. Adult rats and mice of different strains and Syrian hamsters (Cr:RGH) were given Cd doses ranging from 30-50 mumol/kg, sc, and examined histologically for renal lesions between 2 hr and 7 days later. Hamsters developed necrosis of the proximal r

Water-soluble and extractable cadmium (Cd) govern Cd bioavailability. However, cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdSnp) bioavailability remains unclear. Pot experiments investigated how organic materials (1 % wheat straw and pine needles) and sulfate (30 mg S/kg) affect Cd bioavailability and accumulation in rice in CdCl₂- and CdSnp-treated soils. Sulfate addition alone immobilized Cd through sulfate-reducing bacteria-mediated Cd-precipitation in CdCl₂-treated soil, thereby reducing Cd accumulation in brown rice. However, it promoted CdSnp dissolution and Cd transfer, increasing Cd accumulation i

Cadmium is a heavy metal and a non-biodegradable environmental contaminant, and its omnipresence ensures its recurrent exposure to humans and animals. Its intake by chicks leads to fatal implications. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) because of its bio-accumulative nature is an emerging threat to the poultry industry as well as to the humans which consumes these cadmium-intoxicated chickens. In the current study, the target was to elucidate the toxic effects of CdCl2on body weight, hematological, and biochemical parameters as well as its bioaccumulation in different organs of broiler chicks. The decreases of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal blood flow (RBF) after acute administration of cadmium have been reported. The recent studies about renal failure induced by heavy metals revealed that the decrease of glomerular ultrafiltration coefficient is an important contributing factor in the onset of acute renal failure and that the changes of renal hemodynamics are less prominent factors. To clarify whether the changes of renal hemodynamics contribute to the decrease of GFR caused by cadmium, we evaluated the changes of renal hemodynamics and inulin clearance after acute intr

OBJECTIVE: Heavy metals and environmental pollutants, such as cadmium chloride, congenital disorders, and certain diseases, can lead to infertility in men. In this study, the effects of lupeol (an active pentacyclic triterpenoid with antioxidant properties) on testicular injuries induced by cadmium chloride were investigated in male rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lupeol was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich, and the experiment included 40 male Wistar rats divided into 8 groups (healthy control, healthy rats treated with 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of lupeol, cadmium chloride, and three groups that receiv
