Phytotoxicity and Phytotoxic Substances in Calamus tenuis Roxb.

Calamus tenuis is a shrub species distributed across South Asia. It grows well in diversified habitats and tends to dominate plants in the surrounding environment. The phytotoxicity of C. tenuis and the action of its phytochemicals against other plant species could explain its dominant behavior. Compounds with phytotoxic activity are in high demand as prospective sources of ecofriendly bioherbicides. Therefore, we investigated the phytotoxicity of C. tenuis. Aqueous methanol extracts of this plant species significantly limited the growth of four test plant species, two monocots (barnyard grass

Bioactive sesquiterpenoids from the rhizomes of Acorus calamus.

Eight new sesquiterpenes (1-8) and one new norsesquiterpene (9) named calamusins A-I were isolated from the ethanol extract of Acorus calamus rhizomes. The absolute configuration of compound 8 was determined by comparing its experimental and calculated ECD spectra. The absolute configurations of the other compounds were determined from their CD spectra. Furthermore, in in vitro assays, compounds 3, 4, 7, and 9 (10 μM) exhibited weak hepatoprotective activities against APAP-induced HepG2 cell damage.

Major constituents and antimicrobial activity of Korean herb Acorus calamus.

The constituents and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from Acorus calamus were analysed. Methyl isoeugenol and cyclohexanone were identified as the major constituents of the essential oil. The essential oil was tested for antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeast, and has shown strong antibiotic activities against most of the tested microbes, except Escherichia coli. The hexane extract has shown a similar pattern of antimicrobial activity as the essential oil. Methyl isoeugenol, the most abundant constituent in the essential oil, has also shown similar antimicrobial activity

Physiological and Transcriptomic Analysis of Shading Stress Responses in Calamus viminalis Seedlings.

Light critically limits rattan seedling establishment. To elucidate adaptive mechanisms of Calamus viminalis under varied light, we conducted a 360-day pot experiment with four shading levels (0%, 20%, 50%, 75%), integrating morphological, physiological, antioxidant, and RNA-seq analyses. Moderate shading (20%) maximized seedling height (46.97 cm) and ground diameter (12.46 mm), increased net photosynthetic rate by 57.92% versus full light, and raised soluble protein/sugar while minimizing MDA and proline-indicating the lowest oxidative damage. Severe shading (75%) suppressed carbon fixation,

Central nervous system studies on an ethanol extract of Acorus calamus rhizomes.

An ethanol extract of Acorus calamus rhizomes was screened for CNS effects using a battery of 20 tests in rats and mice. The extract exhibited a large number of actions similar to alpha-asarone (an active principle of A. calamus) but differed from the latter in several other respects including the responses to electroshock, apomorphine- and isolation-induced aggressive behaviour, amphetamine toxicity in aggregated mice, behavioural despair syndrome in forced swimming, etc. These differences could be due to chemical substances yet to be isolated from the plant extract.

Interaction of hydroalcoholic extract of Acorus calamus Linn. with sodium valproate and carbamazepine.

Anticonvulsant property of Acorus calamus is known. Since combination therapy can lower the dose of individual drug and dose related toxicities, in this study, the effect of co-administration of hydroalcoholic extract of A. calamus (HAEAC) on conventional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), sodium valproate and carbamazepine was determined using pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures model in rats. On combining the subanticonvulsant doses of HAEAC with sodium valproate and carbamazepine, greater protection as compared to either drug alone was observed. This was not related to change in levels of the AEDs

Molecular cloning and characterization of caffeic acid O-methyltransferase from Acorus calamus.

Volatile phenylpropenes, including α- and β-asarone, are characteristic aromas of sweet flag (Acorus calamus) and have been used as ingredients in pharmaceutical applications. However, studies on the biosynthetic enzymes involved in the production of volatile phenylpropenes in A. calamus remain limited. In this study, we analyzed volatile phenylpropenes, including α- and β-asarone, in the A. calamus plants. Using RNA-sequencing analysis, we identified a gene encoding S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent O-methyltransferase (AcCOMT), which converts caffeic acid to ferulic acid via the methylation
