[Bioavailability of dietary calcium].

Dietary calcium (Ca) is fundamental to the bone's health. Both the purport and the element bioavailability in the food need to be considered. The purpose of this work was to summarize the factors involved in Ca absorption and point out the sources with higher bioavailability. Ca is mostly absorbed in the jejunum and low pH seems to favor its absorption, which is higher during growth, gestation/lactation and Ca and phosphorus (P) deficiency, and lower with aging. The richest and best-absorbed Ca source is cow's milk and its derivatives. Other foods show high Ca concentrations but variable bioav

The bioavailability of dietary calcium.

This update focuses on the bioavailability of dietary calcium for humans. Fundamentals of calcium metabolism, intestinal absorption, urinary excretion and balance are recalled. Dietary factors, especially lactose and other milk components, influencing calcium bioavailability at intestinal and renal levels are reviewed. A critical examination of all the methods used for evaluating calcium bioavailability is made. This includes in vitro assays, classical and isotopic balances, urinary excretion, isotope labeling in the urine, plasma and bones, long term evaluation of bone mineralization and the

[Children's requirements for dietary calcium].

Childrens' need for calcium is uncertain, and as a consequence there are large differences in the official recommendations for calcium intake. A low calcium intake is not followed by acute complications. A very low calcium intake (less than 200 mg/d) combined with a high intake of fibre and phytate can cause osteomalacia, as in rickets. Several studies support that calcium intake during growth is positively associated to bone mineralisation, and to peak bone mass, which is associated to the risk of developing osteoporosis. At present, we know very little about childrens' ability to adapt to a

Intestinal mitochondrial calcium uptake during adaptation to dietary calcium restriction.

In order to evaluate the role of mitochondrial calcium uptake in intestinal calcium absorption, the effect of adaptation to dietary calcium deficiency on the in vitro uptake of calcium by isolated duodenal mitochondria was studied. Experiments were performed utilizing 28-day-old cockerels which had received a diet adequate in vitamin D3 and phosphate and containing either 0.08% or 1.20% calcium. Mitochondrial 45Ca uptake from chicks deprived of dietary calcium was not significantly different from controls. These results suggest that increased calcium uptake by intestinal mitochondria is not cr

Rickets due to dietary calcium deficiency.

Three children, aged 15-18 months were referred because of clinical, radiological and biochemical manifestations of rickets. Serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3) values were within the normal range but 1,25-dihydroxychole-calciferol (1,25-diOH-D3) levels were markedly elevated. All signs and symptoms could be explained by dietary calcium deficiency. They all received the commercial Soya-drink - not adapted for infants - as their main source of nutrition for at least 6 months. Soya-drink has an extremely low calcium content. It should be remembered that defective calcium intake causes sev

Dietary calcium intake - a critical reappraisal.

The clinical implications of calcium deficiency include rickets, poor bone mass accrual as well as abnormal foetal programming during pregnancy, poor peak bone mass due to poor accrual in childhood and adolescence, postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteoporosis of the elderly. Serum calcium is maintained within a narrow normal range, chiefly by resorption from the skeleton and alteration of urinary calcium loss and absorption from gut. Absorption is dependent on vitamin D sufficiency, presence of calcium binders in diet (such as phosphate, oxalate and phytate), age group and physiological state.

Dietary protein affects intestinal calcium absorption.

BACKGROUND: Changes in dietary protein in adults are associated with changes in urinary calcium excretion. The mechanisms underlying this effect are not completely understood, but alterations in intestinal absorption of calcium are not thought to be involved. OBJECTIVE: We reexamined this mechanism by evaluating the effect of 2 amounts of dietary protein (low: 0.7 g/kg; and high: 2.1 g/kg) on fractional calcium absorption in 7 healthy, young women. DESIGN: The experiment consisted of 2 wk of a well-balanced diet containing moderate amounts of calcium, sodium, and protein followed by 5 d of a

Calcium metabolism in postmenopausal osteoporosis: the influence of dietary calcium and net absorbed calcium.

A group of 85 females aged 48-77 years with postmenopausal crush fracture osteoporosis were investigated using a 7 day combined calcium balance and calcium tracer kinetic turnover study to assess the influence of dietary calcium and net absorbed calcium on bone metabolism. During the study, patients were on their habitual diet, as determined by a prestudy registration. Dietary calcium was measured after double serving of all the meals. All urine and feces were collected and analyzed for calcium content. Bone mineralization rate and bone resorption rate were determined by applying the continuou

Dietary calcium and metacarpal growth in ewes.

The effects of excess dietary calcium on bone growth were quantified in 44 ewes fed ad libitum diets that contained one of four levels of dietary calcium (0.37, 0.56, 1.13 and 1.80%) and 0.42% phosphorus. Animals were slaughtered at one of six ages, circulating concentrations of hormones and minerals were measured and bone morphometry was evaluated. None of the diets impaired normal bone growth of the metacarpal as evaluated by overall length, cortical index and growth plate width. Circulating plasma concentrations of calcium and gastrin increased as dietary calcium levels increased, but all v

The role of dietary calcium in bone health.

Approximately 99% of body Ca is found in bone, where it serves a key structural role as a component of hydroxyapatite. Dietary requirements for Ca are determined by the needs for bone development and maintenance, which vary throughout the life stage, with greater needs during the periods of rapid growth in childhood and adolescence, during pregnancy and lactation, and in later life. There is considerable disagreement between expert groups on the daily Ca intake levels that should be recommended, reflecting the uncertainty in the data for establishing Ca requirements. Inadequate dietary Ca in e

The role of dietary calcium in disease prevention.

Of the leading causes of death among adults in developed nations (coronary heart disease, cancer and stroke) most are influenced by diet. Dietary intake is also associated with diseases causing significant morbidity, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Although nutritional epidemiology is inexact as a science, certain reproducible studies have implicated links from nutrient availability in the body to chronic disease. Dietary calcium is one nutrient that has been the focus of multiple studies in an effort to discover its preventive effects. It has been implicated in the

Dietary calcium intake in postmenopausal Chinese women.

Dietary calcium intake has been shown to vary both between and within populations. The aim of this study was to compare two methods of assessment of dietary calcium in the local population of postmenopausal Chinese women. The intake was measured using 24h dietary recall as well as a food frequency questionnaire. There was a high correlation in the measurement of calcium intake between these methods. The mean daily intake in postmenopausal women not taking calcium supplementation was 397.6 mg assessed using 24 h recall, and 390.9 mg according to the food frequency questionnaire. There was no ev

Optimal dietary calcium intake in primary hyperparathyroidism.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dietary calcium intake in primary hyperparathyroidism is associated with differences in bone mineral density and biochemical parameters, and to determine whether these observations are related to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Dietary calcium intake was determined from diet records in 71 unselected patients enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal study on the natural history of primary hyperparathyroidism. Subjects were placed into one of three dietary calcium groups based on their mean dietary calcium intake: very low

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) increase caecal calcium absorption at increasing dietary calcium levels.

Hindgut fermenting herbivores from different vertebrate taxa, including tortoises, and among mammals some afrotheria, perissodactyla incl. equids, several rodents as well as lagomorphs absorb more calcium (Ca) from the digesta than they require, and excrete the surplus via urine. Both proximate and ultimate causes are elusive. It was suggested that this mechanism might ensure phosphorus availability for the hindgut microbiome by removing potentially complex-building Ca from the digesta. Here we use Ussing chamber experiments to show that rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) maintained on four diffe

Calcium and magnesium utilization in rats: effect of dietary butterfat and calcium and of age.

This factorial study was designed to examine the effect of short- and long-term ingestion of dietary calcium (0.25% and 1.0%) and butterfat (5% and 20%) and treatment with dimethylhydrazine (DMH) in rats. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus absorption and, to a lesser extent, total diet digestibility decreased as the rats aged from 2 to 8 mo. Increased ingestion of butterfat had no effect on apparent absorption of calcium among young rats but tended to decrease calcium absorption in mature rats. The weak effect (P less than 0.05) of butterfat on calcium absorption reflected the small amount of c

Determination of fractional absorption of dietary calcium in humans.

Four dual-isotopic label methods for determining true fractional absorption of dietary calcium were compared in 23 subjects. The ratio of the integrals of oral label in a 24-h pooled urine to intravenous label in the same urine is called alpha 24h and was taken as the standard against which the others were compared. alpha Spot is the ratio of the fraction of oral label to the fraction of intravenous label in a single urine specimen; alpha Lag is the ratio of the level of oral label in blood 4 h after administration to the level of intravenous label in blood 2 h after administration. alpha Dec

Utilization of dietary calcium by iron-deficient rats.

Iron deficiency causes cytological and enzymic changes in the gastrointestinal mucosa of animals and man that can be expected to impair the digestion and absorption of other nutrients. In experiment 1, healthy, weanling, female rats were grouped into pair-mates and pair-fed either an iron-deficient or an iron-supplemented diet for 19 weeks. In experiment 2, iron-deficient offspring reared by iron-deficient females were grouped into pair-mates and pair-fed either an iron-deficient or an iron-supplemented diet for 15 weeks. In experiment 1, apparent absorption of calcium was significantly depres
