Investigating potential zoonotic viruses in animal reservoirs is crucial to anticipate viral emergence. Seals can represent large populations of coastal mammals with unknown consequences on the microbiological quality of their surrounding environment. To assess this, we conducted a metaviromics analysis of feces collected from two species of seals in the North-Western Atlantic (Saint-Pierre et Miquelon archipelago). We focused on the Caliciviridae family, which regroups several genera with viruses infecting humans and other mammals, including marine mammals, but none identified in seals (Phoci

Caliciviridae are important pathogens of humans and animals that cause significant and sometimes lethal diseases; however, despite substantial research efforts, specific antiviral treatments for Caliciviridae viruses are lacking. Sclareol is a labdane-type diterpenoid natural fragrance compound with a wide array of biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties. This study revealed that sclareol has a good antiviral effect against Feline calicivirus (FCV) (a surrogate for human norovirus). Our research revealed that sclareol strongly s

Noro- and Sapoviruses belong to the virus family Caliciviridae and are important causative agents of acute epidemic gastroenteritis in man. In many cases transmission of Noro- and Sapoviruses occurs via contaminated food or water and the respective diseases are therefore designated as food borne. Recently, the presence of Noro- and Sapoviruses in farm animals has attracted increasing attention. Clinical symptoms were observed after experimental infection of cattle and swine with members of the two virus groups. Thus far it is not known, whether virus transmission from animals to man does occur

Acute and chronic urticaria may be triggered by infection. Streptococci and Helicobacter pylori are the most frequent acute infectious causes. We present two cases in which we cultured Norovirus in the stool of patients with both acute and chronic urticaria. Noroviruses (genus Norovirus, family Caliciviridae) are a group of single stranded RNA, nonenveloped viruses which cause acute gastroenteritis in humans. Norovirus was recently approved as the official genus name for the group of viruses provisionally described as Norwalk-like viruses (NLV). Therapy is symptomatic. Noroviruses should be re

In this case study, a co-infection with coxsackievirus A5 (family Picornaviridae) and norovirus GII.4 (family Caliciviridae) was detected by RT-PCR in a faecal sample from a six-year-old girl with symptoms of severe acute encephalopathy subsequently diagnosed as the intermittent form of maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). The two co-infecting viruses, which had been detected previously, appeared to have triggered the underlying metabolic disorder. Here, we describe the genotyping of the viruses, as well as the chronological course, laboratory test results, and clinical presentation of this case,

Caliciviruses (Caliciviridae) and astroviruses (Astroviridae) are among the leading cause of non-bacterial foodborne disease and gastroenteritis in human. These non-enveloped RNA viruses infect a wide range of vertebrate species including rodents. Rodents are among the most important hosts of infectious diseases globally and are responsible for over 80 zoonotic pathogens that affect humans. Therefore, screening pathogens in rodents will be is necessary to prevent cross-species transmission to prevent zoonotic outbreaks. Norwalk virus and Noro virus are members of the Caliciviridae. These viruses are morphological similarity in each other and shows small round structure. These viruses also are well known as main pathogens of acute infectious gastroenteritis. Clinical features include an incubation period of 24 of 48 hours and illness period of 18 to 72 hours with vomiting and diarrhea in most patients and high secondary attack rates. Oral transmitted infection occurs contaminated water and foods. In our country, outbreak of Noro virus-related gastroenteritis are reported sometimes in hospital and nursing home

Recoviruses (rhesus enteric caliciviruses) are members of the Caliciviridae family. They are a valuable model for studying human caliciviruses such as noroviruses. It has been suggested that some recoviruses may infect humans, which necessitates detailed studies on the cell type tropism of recoviruses. For the recoviruses that have been cultured to date, successful growth has only been reported in monkey kidney cell lines, precluding their use to study virus interactions with human cells. We isolated and characterized a new recovirus, Recovirus Mo/TG30/2012, from monkey stool which grew effici

Human norovirus (HuNoV), the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States and acute gastroenteritis globally, replicates in the zebrafish embryo and larvae model. However, due to challenges in obtaining well-characterized HuNoV positive stool specimens for research, demonstrating replication of Tulane virus (TuV), a surrogate of HuNoV, in the zebrafish embryo and larvae model is valuable to study HuNoV infection mechanisms and subsequent prevention and control strategies. Three nL of TuV (9 log RNA copies/mL or 7 log PFU/mL) were microinjected into either fertilized zebrafish eggs (

Norovirus, belonging to the Caliciviridae family, is a non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. It is widely acknowledged as a significant etiological agent responsible for non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis and considered a major cause thereof. Norovirus is primarily tranmitted via fecal-oral route, but can also be transmitted via airborne routes. Clinical manifestations often include symptoms associated with acute gastroenteritis, like nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and others. Due to the specific pathogenic mechanism of the virus, and genomic diversity,

Noroviruses (NoVs) belong to the Caliciviridae family of viruses and are responsible for causing the majority of gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. In the past decade, research on NoV biology has intensified because of the discovery of murine NoV and subsequently the first cell culture system and small animal model for NoV replication and pathogenesis. In this review, we discuss the current literature on NoV biology, focusing particularly on NoV replication and the interaction between NoV and the host immune response. Understanding the NoV replication cycle and its interaction with cellular

Sapovirus (SaV) is a member of the Caliciviridae family, which causes acute gastroenteritis in humans and animals. Human sapoviruses (HuSaVs) are genetically and antigenically diverse, but the lack of a viral replication system and structural information has hampered the development of vaccines and therapeutics. Here, we successfully produced a self-assembled virus-like particle (VLP) from the HuSaV GI.6 VP1 protein, and the first atomic structure was determined using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at a 2.9-Å resolution. The atomic model of the VP1 protein revealed a unique

Acute infectious gastroenteritis is an important illness worldwide, especially on children, with viruses accounting for approximately 70% of the acute cases. A high number of these cases have an unknown etiological agent and the rise of next generation sequencing technologies has opened new opportunities for viral pathogen detection and discovery. Viral metagenomics in routine clinical settings has the potential to identify unexpected or novel variants of viral pathogens that cause gastroenteritis. In this study, 124 samples from acute gastroenteritis patients from 2012-2014 previously tested

Surveillance using molecular diagnostic methods developed in the past decade shows that human caliciviruses, particularly the Noroviruses, are the most important cause of pediatric acute gastroenteritis, next to rotavirus. Noroviruses also cause severe gastroenteritis in children, requiring hospitalization. The Sapovirus, a morphologically and genetically distinct genus of calicivirus, cause mainly milder endemic pediatric gastroenteritis. Noroviruses and Sapoviruses are genetically and antigenetically diverse, and multiple genetic types cocirculate in the same community. Human caliciviruses s

Numerous viruses of human or animal origin can spread in the environment and infect people via water and food, mostly through ingestion and occasionally through skin contact. These viruses are released into the environment by various routes including water run-offs and aerosols. Furthermore, zoonotic viruses may infect humans exposed to contaminated surface waters. Foodstuffs of animal origin can be contaminated, and their consumption may cause human infection if the viruses are not inactivated during food processing. Molecular epidemiology and surveillance of environmental samples are necessa

The progress of sequencing technologies has facilitated metagenomics projects on environmental samples like sewage water. The present study concerned the analysis of sewage samples collected from 3 locations in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. The analysis focused on RNA viruses known to infect humans and identified viruses from 10 families. The proportion of human virus species in the sewage samples was relatively stable with an average of 17%. Thirty virus species known to infect humans were identified and they belonged to 6 families: Picornaviridae (12), Astroviridae (11), Reoviri

The family Caliciviridae encompasses a diverse group of non-enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses that are significant pathogens in veterinary medicine. This narrative review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the clinical, molecular, and epidemiological features of the three calicivirus genera identified in bovine hosts: Norovirus, Nebovirus, and Vesivirus. Bovine noroviruses and neboviruses are neglected enteric pathogens, frequently detected in association with neonatal calf diarrhea and often present in co-infections with other enteric agents. Acute Viral Gastroenteritis: Viruses Other Than Norovirus Abstract. Norovirus is the leading cause of acute viral gastroenteritis. Norovirus is highly contagious, thus outbreaks of norovirus in hospitals and long-term care facilities are feared. Usually, stool samples of patients with a potentially viral gastroenteritis are first checked for the presence of norovirus. In recent years, sapovirus and astrovirus were increasingly reported as cause of acute gastroenteritis. Outbreaks of acute viral gastroenteritis caused by sapovirus or astrovirus are hardly distinguishable from those caused by no

UNLABELLED: Soon after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, the Betacoronavirus SARS-CoV-2 infection of several mink farms breeding American minks ( Neovison vison ) for fur was detected in several countries of Europe. The risk of a new reservoir formation and of a reverse zoonosis from minks was then a major concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the four French mink farms for the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 at the end of 2020. The investigations took place during the slaughtering period thus facilitating different types of sampling (swabs and blood). In one of the f
