An Update on Feline Calicivirus.

Research on naturally occurring hypothyroidism in adult cats is limited to 16 reported cases in the last three decades, highlighting the need for more comprehensive studies. This prospective multicenter study aimed to identify cases of spontaneous primary hypothyroidism (SPH) in adult cats presented over a one-year period . Staff members of two university hospitals and one private referral clinic screened for cats aged older than one year showing clinical signs suggestive of feline hypothyroidism including obstipation, obesity/weight gain, lethargy, goiter size, skin changes or mild azotemia.

Feline chlamydia and calicivirus infections.

Feline conjunctivitis is common and often presents a clinical challenge to the veterinarian. Chlamydia psittaci is an important pathogen and should always be considered when evaluating cats with conjunctivitis. FCV is an infrequent cause of conjunctivitis and only causes the disease in conjunction with other clinical signs of this infection, such as oral mucosal ulcers and upper respiratory tract disease.

Sites of persistence of feline calicivirus.

Various tissues were collected from eight cats persistently infected with feline calicivirus (FCV) strain 255 to determine the sites of viral persistence. Tissues were tested by virus isolation and an immunohistochemical technique in which infected cells were detected in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections using rabbit antiserum to FCV 255, a biotinylated second antibody and streptavidin-peroxidase. Virus was detected by one or both techniques in tonsillar tissues of each animal, and not in other samples. Infected cells were detected in samples from six of eight kittens, and in e

Modified-Live Feline Calicivirus Vaccination Elicits Cellular Immunity against a Current Feline Calicivirus Field Strain in an Experimental Feline Challenge Study.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common cat virus associated with oral ulcerations and virulent-systemic disease. Efficacious FCV vaccines protect against severe disease but not against infection. The high genetic diversity of FCV poses a challenge in vaccine design. Protection against FCV has been related to humoral and cellular immunity; the latter has not been studied in detail. This study investigates the cellular and humoral immune response of specified pathogen-free (SPF) cats after modified-live FCV F9 vaccinations and two heterologous FCV challenges by the analysis of lymphocyte subsets,

Identification of prevalent Feline Calicivirus strains and novel antiviral efficacy of CpG49 stimulus in Feline Calicivirus-infected cats.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly mutable and prevalent virus causing significant suffering in cats and currently lacking effective cures, while FCV studies mainly focus on prevention. To obtain an active therapeutic against FCV, we established a reliable FCV infection model using the prevalent FCV strain (FG24-1) isolated from clinical samples and evaluated the therapeutic effect of TLR9 agonist CpG49 (a CpG plasmid with well-immunostimulatory capacity) on this model. Our results showed that CpG49 elicited strong Th1-biased interferon (I and II) responses, thereby significantly inhibiting

Feline calicivirus and other respiratory pathogens in cats with Feline calicivirus-related symptoms and in clinically healthy cats in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Cats with feline calicivirus (FCV)-related symptoms are commonly presented to veterinary practitioners. Various clinical manifestations have been attributed to FCV, i.e. upper respiratory tract disease (URTD), oral ulcerations, gingivostomatitis, limping syndrome and virulent systemic disease. Additionally, healthy cats can shed FCV. The aims of this study were 1) to investigate the frequency of FCV in cats with FCV-related symptoms and in healthy cats in Switzerland, 2) to assess risk and protective factors for infection, such as signalment, housing conditions, vaccination, and co

An Outbreak of Limping Syndrome Associated with Feline Calicivirus.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common viral pathogen found in domestic cats. FCV is highly contagious and demonstrates a high genetic variability. Upper respiratory tract disease, oral ulcerations, salivation, and gingivitis-stomatitis have been regarded as typical clinical signs of FCV infection. Ulcerative dermatitis, abortion, severe pneumonia, enteritis, chronic stomatitis, and virulent systemic disease have been reported more sporadically. Limping syndrome has been also described either in naturally or experimentally FCV-infected cats. In this study, we monitored a small outbreak of FCV in

Antiviral effect of mefloquine on feline calicivirus in vitro.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is an important viral pathogen of domestic cats causing clinical signs ranging from mild to severe oral ulceration or upper respiratory tract disease through to a severe fatal systemic disease. Current therapeutic options are limited, with no direct acting antivirals available for treatment. This study screened a panel of 19 compounds for potential antiviral activity against FCV strain F9 and recent field isolates in vitro. Using a resazurin-based cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay, mefloquine demonstrated a marked inhibitory effect on FCV induced CPE, albeit wit

Pathogenicity of a strain of feline calicivirus for domestic kittens.

A strain of feline calicivirus, isolated from a cheetah exhibiting ulcerative glossitis and conjunctivitis, was administered by aerosol to 4 domestic cats and by contact to a fifth cat. Despite the limited number of animals available for the experiment, the pathogenicity of the virus strain for domestic cats was established. In aerosol-infected animals, clinical signs were referable to infection of both upper and lower respiratory tracts. The virus produced an interstitial pneumonia which, early in infection, was uncomplicated by secondary bronchopneumonia. The in-contact cat exhibited clinica

Isolation of feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus from domestic cats 1980 to 1989.

Isolation rates of feline herpesvirus (FHV) and feline calicivirus (FCV) from oropharyngeal swabs, taken from 6866 cats in 1980 to 1989 were studied retrospectively. FCV was isolated from 1364 (19.9 per cent) and FHV from 285 (4.2 per cent). The ratio of FCV:FHV isolations varied from 1.3:1 to 15:1 in individual years with an overall ratio of 4.8:1. Isolation of both viruses was fairly uniform for each year and there was no breed or sex disposition to either virus. Of 872 cats shedding FCV and 213 cats shedding FHV, of known age, 447 (51.3 per cent) with FCV and 140 (65.7 per cent) with FHV we

Feline calicivirus infection. ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

OVERVIEW: Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly variable virus. More severe, systemic forms of FCV infection have been observed recently. INFECTION: Sick, acutely infected or carrier cats shed FCV in oronasal and conjunctival secretions. Infection occurs mainly through direct contact. DISEASE SIGNS: The main clinical signs are oral ulcers, upper respiratory signs and a high fever. Feline calicivirus may be isolated from nearly all cats with chronic stomatitis or gingivitis. Cats with 'virulent systemic FCV disease' variably show pyrexia, cutaneous oedema, ulcerative lesions on the head and li

Acute arthritis of cats associated with feline calicivirus infection.

Twelve specific pathogen-free cats were infected either by intra-articular inoculation or by contact exposure to one of two strains of feline calicivirus (FCV), either F65, a field strain originating from an outbreak of lameness in a group of cats, or a vaccine strain. Following either route of exposure, both strains induced signs typical of FCV infection including oral and nasal ulceration, conjunctivitis and ocular discharge. These signs were of equal severity for both virus strains, but overall, following either route of infection, F65 induced more severe disease than the vaccine strain, wi

Experimentally induced feline calicivirus infection: clinical signs and lesions.

Sixty-six specific-pathogen-free cats were allotted to 10 groups and exposed by aerosol to 10 feline calicivirus (FCV) isolates. Viruses of different virulence were identified. The more virulent FCV caused pyrexia, depression, dyspnea, pneumonia, vesicles, or ulcers of the tongue and ulceration of the hard palate and nostrils. The FCV of low virulence caused similar lesions of the tongue, palate, and nostrils but little or no malaise, pyrexia, or pneumonia. Lesions produced by FCV usually were confined to the oral mucosa, tonsils, and lungs. Lesions in the nasal or trachea were associated with

Chronic gingivitis in a colony of cats infected with feline immunodeficiency virus and feline calicivirus.

The inadvertent introduction of feline calicivirus into a colony of 19 experimental cats, 13 of which were infected with feline immunodeficiency virus, resulted in the development of chronic gingivitis in nine animals. Of these, six were infected with both viruses, one with the immunodeficiency virus alone and two with the calicivirus alone. The gingivitis was generally more severe in the cats infected with both viruses, suggesting that feline immunodeficiency virus may make cats infected with calicivirus more susceptible to chronic gingivitis.

European molecular epidemiology and strain diversity of feline calicivirus.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) causes a variable syndrome of upper respiratory tract disease, mouth ulcers and lameness. A convenience-based prospective sample of oropharyngeal swabs (n=426) was obtained from five countries (France, Germany, Greece, Portugal and the UK). The prevalence of FCV by virus isolation was 22.2 per cent. Multivariable analysis found that animals presenting with lymphoplasmacytic gingivitis stomatitis complex were more likely to test positive for FCV infection. Furthermore, vaccinated cats up to 48 months of age were significantly less likely to be infected with FCV than unv
