The evolution of myiasis in blowflies (Calliphoridae).

Blowflies (Calliphoridae) are characterised by the ability of their larvae to develop in animal flesh. Where the host is a living vertebrate, such parasitism by dipterous larvae is known as myiasis. However, the evolutionary origins of the myiasis habit in the Calliphoridae, a family which includes the blowflies and screwworm flies, remain unclear. Species associated with an ectoparasitic lifestyle can be divided generally into three groups based on their larval feeding habits: saprophagy, facultative ectoparasitism, and obligate parasitism, and it has been proposed that this functional divisi

Review of Chrysomya rufifacies (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

The taxonomy, distribution, bionomics, and medical and veterinary importance of C. rufifacies are reviewed and summarized. Late instars are beneficial as predators of the maggots of pathogen-transmitting and myiasis-producing flies, but strains from parts of Australia, India, and Hawaii are harmful as secondary myiasis agents. The effects of invasions, possible competition, and displacement of native calliphorids are discussed. The developmental duration of the immature stadia at different temperatures are reviewed. The primary literature (274 papers) dealing with this fly is given and cross-r

A detector dog for screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

A male German wirehaired pointer, Canis familiaris L., was trained to search for and locate screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel); pupae; and animals infested with screwworms. The command, "find it" led to the detection of a screwworm-infested animal and the command "search" led to the detection of screwworm pupae. After approximately 5 mo of training, the dog could detect screwworm-infested animals. After 3 mo more of training, the dog could detect screwworm pupae. Through 7 August 1989, the dog had a success rate of 100% (265 tests) with training dummies and 94.7% (18 successes for 1

Cryopreservation of embryos of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Embryos of Lucilia (Phaenicia) sericata (Meigen) (Diptera Calliphoridae), the green blowfly, were successfully cryopreserved by vitrification in liquid nitrogen and stored for 8 yr. Embryos incubated at 19 degrees C for 17 h after oviposition were found to be the most appropriate stage to cryopreserve. Removal of the embryonic surface water was done using 2-propanol before the alkane treatment to permeabilize the embryo. Exposure to 2-propanol for > 10 s caused necrotic tissue damage in the embryos. Among the alkanes used, hexane was found to be a superior permeabilizing solvent compared with

Bacterial Volatiles Attract Gravid Secondary Screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Bovine blood inoculated and incubated with bacteria was tested to determine if secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.), would be attracted to the incubated substrate for oviposition. Five species of bacteria, Klebsiella oxytoca (Flugge), Proteus mirabilis Hauser, Proteus vulgaris Hauser, Providencia rettgeri Hadley, Elkins and Caldwell, and Providencia stuartii Ewing, previously isolated from animal wounds infested by primary screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), were used. Incubated substrates were tested in a two-choice cage bioassay to study landing response and ovipositi

Gelled diet for screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) mass production.

A rearing system based on a diet gelled with Water-Lock G-400, a synthetic superabsorbent (poly(2-propenamide-co-2-propenoic acid, sodium salt)) (WL), was compared with the standard rearing system (liquid diet suspended in acetate fibers) for the mass production of screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). The WL rearing system yielded 2% heavier pupae, 32% higher egg to pupa survival, and required 54% less diet and 88% less labor than the standard rearing system. Other advantages of the WL system include reduced susceptibility to suboptimal environmental conditions and labor practices a

New world screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae): past, present and future.

The New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is one of the most important parasites of livestock and wildlife in the Americas. Research conducted during the last 100 yr has formed the foundation of the most successful insect control program in the world: the NWS eradication program. The program eradicated NWS from North and Central America and established a biological barrier at the Isthmus of Panama in 2004 using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Except for a brief incursion in the Florida Keys in 2016, the last case of NWS in the United States was in 1982. Since the e

An artificial diet for rearing Cochliomyia macellaria (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Larvae of the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.), feed on carrion and may sometimes cause animal myiasis. They have been reared in the laboratory on various animal tissues to study their growth and development because of their importance in forensic science. We use secondary screwworms in our laboratory for preliminary experiments as a model for the primary screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), which has been eradicated from the United States. C. macellaria larvae reared on animal tissues produced a putrid odor, an unfavorable condition in the laboratory, and variable pu

Cutaneous myiasis by Calliphoridae dipterans in dogs from Chad.

Cutaneous myiasis caused by various Calliphoridae dipteran species is prevalent worldwide and is of particular veterinary and public health concern. Recently, in a scientific exploration of the Guinea Worm Eradication Program to Chad, Africa, we observed that dogs with mutilated ears, based on local awareness, were caused by cutaneous myiasis. In this study, we analyzed epidemiological, morphological, and molecular data on cutaneous myiasis in dogs from Chad. From September to October 2022, dogs (n = 1,562) from 56 villages situated along the Chari River were physically inspected for cutaneous

Phylogenetic radiation of the greenbottle flies (Diptera, Calliphoridae, Luciliinae).

The subfamily Luciliinae is diverse and geographically widespread. Its four currently recognised genera (Dyscritomyia Grimshaw, 1901, Hemipyrellia Townsend, 1918, Hypopygiopsis Townsend 1916 and Lucilia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) contain species that range from saprophages to obligate parasites, but their pattern of phylogenetic diversification is unclear. The 28S rRNA, COI and Period genes of 14 species of Lucilia and Hemipyrellia were partially sequenced and analysed together with sequences of 11 further species from public databases. The molecular data confirmed molecular paraphyly in three s

Diversity of Calliphoridae (Diptera) in Brazil's Tinguá Biological Reserve.

The Calliphoridae are flies of great ecological, medical and sanitary importance because they are decomposers of organic matter, mechanical vectors of pathogenic agents, and causers of myiasis. This paper attempts to ascertain the diversity of Calliphoridae in the Tinguá Biological Reserve and correlate meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity of the air, and precipitation) with the occurrence of these flies. The study was conducted at a site in the Tinguá Biological Reserve, located in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four traps were set up using ch

Evolutionary profile of the family Calliphoridae, with notes on the origin of myiasis.

The family Calliphoridae is a group of heterogenous calyptrate flies with a worldwide distribution including species of ecological, veterinary, medical, and forensic importance. Notorious for their parasitic habits, the larvae of many blowflies are characterised - like some other dipteran larvae - by their ability to develop in animal flesh. When parasitism affects a living host, it is termed "myiasis". This has led the Calliphoridae to be considered as a pivotal family in its relationship with a man. Nevertheless, even after more than 50 years of research, the phylogenetic relationships among

Description of the puparium of Protocalliphora nourtevai (Insecta: Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Avian blowflies are obligatory blood-sucking parasite larvae that typically pupariate in bird nests. The empty puparia are diagnostically important, as they are usually the only evidence for the presence of these parasites in nests. Compared to the Nearctic region, very little is known about puparia of Palearctic species. Here, we provide the first description of puparia of Protocalliphora nourtevai from nests of 2 bird species, namely, Phoenicurus phoenicurus and Phoenicurus ochruros from Finland. Puparia possessed irregular pronounced folds in the hyper-, meso-, and hypostigmatal region, and

A rare case of gingival myiasis caused by diptera (Calliphoridae).

Myiasis was first described by Hope in 1840. Since then, many cases of myiasis affecting different human organs have been reported. Oral myiasis is very rare in healthy persons but occurs mainly in the tropics and associated with inadequate public and personal hygiene. In this case report, we present clinical findings gingival myiasis. The patient was 26-year-old farmer and his chief complaint was discomfort and swelling in his maxillary gingiva. The patient's medical and family histories were non-contributory and oral hygiene was not acceptable. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic c

A review on the occurrence of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Brazil.

Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel, 1858), the New World screwworm, causes primary myiasis in wild and domestic animals in tropical and subtropical regions of Brazil. Although this species is considered to occur throughout the country, organized information about its recorded distribution has not been available until now. This article aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the historical and current data published on both immature (myiasis) and adult stages of C. hominivorax in Brazil. A total of 174 articles were found; of these, 141 articles reported myiasis cases in cattle (146 records),

Myiasis by Cordylobia anthropophaga (Calliphoridae) in rodents from Cape Verde.

PURPOSE: The tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is widely distributed in continental tropical and subtropical Africa, being the most common cause of furuncular myiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of the present work was to analyze the role of rodents as possible reservoirs of C. anthropophaga in Cape Verde, considering the zoonotic character of this fly species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 peridomestic rodents were studied in Santiago island. For the obtained larvae, morphological and molecular characters were analyzed. RESULTS: Cordylobia anthropophag

Effectiveness of wound cleansing treatments on maggot (Diptera, Calliphoridae) mortality.

Myiasis is defined as an infestation of the organs and/or tissues of human and other animals by fly maggots. Fly species that normally breed in meat or carrion (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae) may become involved in cutaneous myiasis by colonizing preexisting wounds. Reports of human wound myiasis contracted in hospitals and nursing homes, especially when patients are chronically ill or bed-ridden, are not uncommon across North America and often result in cases of neglect and civil litigation. Based on a case history dealing with this latter situation and circumstances surrounding the t
