Photoprotective effect of Calluna vulgaris extract against UVB-induced phototoxicity in human immortalized keratinocytes.

There is an increasing interest in the use of natural antioxidants as photoprotective agents against skin damages produced by ultraviolet radiation. The aim of our study was to investigate the protective effect of a Calluna vulgaris extract in human keratinocytes (HaCaT) exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. HaCaT cells were treated with C. vulgaris extract 30 minutes prior to irradiation with UVB. The protective effect was evaluated by assessing cell viability using tetrasolium salt (MTT) assay; the generation of lipid peroxides was evaluated using malondialdehide assay (MDA); and DNA dam

Determination of polyphenols and in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull.

Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull belonging to Ericaceae family occurs mostly at sour habitats in subalpine regions in Europe. The species is cultivated in many countries, but it is known as medicinal plant because of polyphenols and aucubin as main compounds. In this work, the polyphenolic, flavonoid, and tannin content, as well as the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the aerial part, were evaluated. In phytochemical analyses, methanol extract showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid content, followed by ethanol, methanol/water, and aqueous extracts. In antimicrobial tests, chloroform, eth

Herbivory and Attenuated UV Radiation Affect Volatile Emissions of the Invasive Weed Calluna vulgaris.

Calluna vulgaris (heather) is an aggressive invasive weed on the Central Plateau, North Is., New Zealand (NZ), where it encounters different environmental factors compared to its native range in Europe, such as high ultraviolet radiation (UV) and a lack of specialist herbivores. The specialist herbivore Lochmaea suturalis (heather beetle) was introduced from the United Kingdom (UK) in 1996 as a biocontrol agent to manage this invasive weed. Like other plant invaders, a novel environment may be challenging for heather as it adjusts to its new conditions. This process of "adjustment" involves mo

Fire severity is more sensitive to low fuel moisture content on Calluna heathlands than on peat bogs.

Moorland habitats dominated by the dwarf shrub Calluna vulgaris provide important ecosystem services. Drought is projected to intensify throughout their range, potentially leading to increased fire severity as moisture is a key control on severity. We studied the effect of low fuel moisture content (FMC) on fire severity by using 2×2m rain-out shelters prior to completing 19 experimental fires in two sites in Scotland (UK): a dry heath with thin organic soils and a raised bog with deep, saturated peat, both dominated by Calluna vulgaris. Reduced FMC of the moss and litter (M/L) layer at both s

The feeding of heather (Calluna vulgaris) to Teladorsagia circumcincta infected lambs reduces parasitism but can detrimentally impact performance.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections impact small ruminant health, welfare, and production across farming systems. Rising anthelmintic resistance and regulation of synthetic drug use in organic farming is driving research and development of sustainable alternatives for GIN control. One alternative is the feeding of plants that contain secondary metabolites (PSMs) e.g., proanthocyanidins (PA, syn. condensed tannins) that have shown anthelmintic potential. However, PSMs can potentially impair performance, arising from reduced palatability and thus intake, digestibility or even toxicity eff

Effect of Zinc Precursors on the Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Applications of Green Synthesized ZnO Nanostructures Using Calluna vulgaris.

In this study, we report the environmentally friendly green synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures using Calluna vulgaris (C. vulgaris) leaves extract. The extract was used as a reductant and stabilizer in aqueous medium instead of chemicals and two different precursors, zinc acetate dihydrate and zinc nitrate hexahydrate, were used to synthesize ZnO-Acetate and ZnO-Nitrate nanostructures, respectively. The optical, structural, and morphological characteristics of the green synthesized ZnO nanostructures were investigated by UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and

Photochemoprotective effect of Calluna vulgaris extract on skin exposed to multiple doses of ultraviolet B in SKH-1 hairless mice.

UVB is a major cause of nonmelanoma skin cancer in humans. Photochemoprevention represents an important strategy in protecting the skin against the detrimental effects of ultraviolet B (UVB). We investigated the activity of Calluna vulgaris (Cv) delivered via a hydrogel on 3 main pathways (oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage) on skin exposed to multiple doses of UVB in SKH-1 mice. Fifty female mice were divided randomly into 5 groups: control, vehicle, UVB irradiated, Cv + UVB irradiated, and Cv + vehicle + UVB irradiated. The extract was applied topically on the skin in a dose of 4 mg

Chemopreventive effects of Calluna vulgaris and Vitis vinifera extracts on UVB-induced skin damage in SKH-1 hairless mice.

Solar ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a major cause of non-melanoma skin cancer in humans. Photochemoprevention with natural products represents a simple but very effective strategy in the management of cutaneous neoplasia. The study investigated the protective activity of Calluna vulgaris (Cv) and red grape seeds (Vitis vinifera L, Burgund Mare variety) (BM) extracts in vivo on UVB-induced deleterious effects in SKH-1 mice skin. Forty SKH-1 mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=10): control, UVB irradiated, Cv + UVB irradiated, BM+UVB irradiated. Both extracts were applied topically on th

Long-Term Drought Persistently Shifts Plant and Soil Microbial Communities but Has Limited Impact on CO2 Fluxes Under Subsequent Drought.

Droughts are increasing with climate change, affecting the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and limiting their capacity to mitigate rising atmospheric CO2 levels. However, there is still large uncertainty on the long-term impacts of drought on ecosystem carbon (C) cycling, and how this determines the effect of subsequent droughts. Here, we aimed to quantify how drought legacy affects the response of a heathland ecosystem to a subsequent drought for two life stages of Calluna vulgaris resulting from different mowing regimes. We imposed a subsequent drought in a long-term (20 years) drought

Reduced nitrogen has a greater effect than oxidised nitrogen on dry heathland vegetation.

We investigated the effects of different ratios of reduced (NH4+) versus oxidised (NO3(-)) nitrogen in deposition on heathland and species-rich grassland vegetation at high nitrogen deposition levels in large mesocosms filled with nutrient-poor soils to which different NH4+/NO3(-) ratios were applied. The response of the forbs, Antennaria dioica, Arnica montana, Gentiana pneumonanthe, Thymus serpyllum, the grasses Danthonia decumbens, Deschampsia flexuosa, Nardus stricta and the shrub Calluna vulgaris was recorded. The forb A. dioica and the grass D.decumbens preferred low NH4+/NO3(-) ratios a

Simulated climate change impact on summer dissolved organic carbon release from peat and surface vegetation: implications for drinking water treatment.

Uncertainty regarding changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) quantity and quality has created interest in managing peatlands for their ecosystem services such as drinking water provision. The evidence base for such interventions is, however, sometimes contradictory. We performed a laboratory climate manipulation using a factorial design on two dominant peatland vegetation types (Calluna vulgaris and Sphagnum Spp.) and a peat soil collected from a drinking water catchment in Exmoor National Park, UK. Temperature and rainfall were set to represent baseline and future conditions under the UKCP

Polyphenols and Sunburn.

Polyphenols are antioxidant molecules found in many foods such as green tea, chocolate, grape seeds, and wine. Polyphenols have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic properties. Growing evidence suggests that polyphenols may be used for the prevention of sunburns as polyphenols decrease the damaging effects of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on the skin. This review was conducted to examine the evidence for use of topically and orally ingested polyphenols in prevention of sunburns. The PubMed database was searched for studies that examined polyphenols and its

Metagenomics reveals fibre fermentation and AMR pathways in red grouse (Lagopus scotica) microbiota.

BACKGROUND: The avian caecal microbiota plays a vital role in host nutrition, enabling non-digestible, fibrous material to be converted into compounds that can be absorbed and used as an energy source by the host. The diet of adult red grouse (Lagopus scotica) is dominated by heather (Calluna vulgaris), which is particularly high in fibre. It is therefore likely that the caecal microbiota plays a key role in enabling grouse to thrive on this diet. In this study, we present the first characterisation of the caecal microbiota of red grouse using modern sequencing methods. RESULTS: We performed m

Alpine dwarf shrubs on green roofs: species-specific physiological responses to substrate depth and drought intensity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Green roofs can enhance urban biodiversity when local, functionally diverse species are used. However, extreme roof conditions require species selection based on plant eco-physiological characteristics. METHODS: This study evaluated the performance of four Alpine dwarf shrubs (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. vitis-idaea, Calluna vulgaris) in green roof plots with 10 and 30 cm substrate under natural conditions (temperate climate) and compared it with the drought-tolerant shrub Salvia officinalis as a reference. Seasonal and daily variations in leaf temper

Bioindication of radioactive contamination by honey bees in the Bryansk and Rostov regions: Foraging dynamics of 137Cs and 40K in the plant-bee-bee product pathway.

Although some studies have investigated the accumulation of radionuclides in honey, other bee products such as wax and bee bread remain insufficiently studied, particularly in terms of seasonal and intra-seasonal dynamics. Spatial patterns of contamination within the foraging area of honey bees, as well as the role of botanical composition of nectar sources, also remain poorly understood. This study examines the dynamics of 137Cs and 40K accumulation along the pathway plant-bee-bee product on radioactively contaminated territories in the Bryansk Region during different periods of the honey flo
