Assembly and analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome of an endemic Camellia species of China, Camellia tachangensis.

BACKGROUND: Camellia tachangensis F. C. Zhang is an endemic Camellia species of the junction of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi Provinces in China. It is characterized by a primitive five-chambered ovary morphology and serves as the botanical source of the renowned "Pu'an Red Tea". Unfortunately, the populations of the species have declined due to the destruction of their habitats by human activities. The lack of mitochondrial genomic resources has hindered research into molecular breeding and phylogenetic evolution of C. tachangensis. RESULT: In this study, we had sequenced, assembled, and annot

Spontaneously Assembled Nano-aggregates in Clear Green Tea Infusions from Camellia ptilophylla and Camellia sinensis.

Tea nano-aggregates spontaneously assembled in clear tea infusions are considered as the precursors of tea cream, although their molecular basis remains obscure. Here, we characterized nano-aggregates in green tea infusions from Camellia ptilophylla, a peculiar tea variety with 6.0% of theobromine, and Camellia sinensis as the control for comparative purpose. Numerous negatively charged spherical colloidal particles of 50-100 nm in diameter were primarily found in both green tea infusions. Catechins, proteins, and carbohydrates were confirmed as the dominant components in green tea nano-aggreg

Camellia oil (Camellia oleifera Abel.) attenuates CCl4-induced liver fibrosis via suppressing hepatocyte apoptosis in mice.

Liver fibrosis is a common part of the pathological development of many chronic liver diseases. As liver fibrosis progresses, it may lead to cirrhosis, portal hypertension, liver decompensation, liver tumours, and death. Camellia oil (Camellia oleifera Abel.) is widely used as an edible oil in China. It has a wide range of biological activities and is used as a traditional medicine to treat conditions such as burns and stomach pains. However, whether camellia oil can ameliorate liver fibrosis remains unclear. We constructed a liver fibrosis model induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and then

Integrative taxonomic revision of three Camellia species from section Tuberculata (Camellia, Theaceae) by morphological, anatomical, palynological, and molecular evidence.

BACKGROUND: The section Tuberculata (Camellia L.) comprises 18 species, forming a monophyletic group with unique “tuberculate-wrinkled fruit pericarp” morphological characteristics. However, the interspecific relationships within this section remain poorly resolved. A notable taxonomic controversy involves Camellia lipingensis, C. zengii, and C. rhytidocarpa, which were previously considered conspecific. On the basis of extensive population surveys conducted in their type localities, we identified significant morphological disparities among these three taxa. To comprehensively clarify their ta

High temperature disrupts sporocyte development in Camellia meiocarpa.

High temperature has a significant impact on plant reproductive development, driving the formation of 2n gametes by interfering with the meiosis and cytokinesis of sporocytes. This study used Camellia meiocarpa as the material, integrating cytological and molecular biology approaches to reveal the cytological effects and regulatory mechanisms of high temperature on sporocyte development. The results showed that meiosis in microsporocyte and megasporocyte of C. meiocarpa exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity. High temperature markedly disrupted sporocyte development and induced abnor

Biosynthesis and Application of Catechins and Their Derivatives in Camellia sinensis.

Tea is one of the world's most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverages and is a rich source of bioactive compounds. The synthesis and accumulation of catechins, central flavonols in the secondary metabolism of the tea plant, not only define the bitterness and astringency of the tea infusion but also form the chemical cornerstone of its remarkable antioxidant activity, playing a key physiological role in the plant's abiotic stress tolerance. Catechin biosynthesis involves a complex enzymatic network in tea plants (Camellia sinensis). With the development of molecular biotechnology, the biosynth

Two new aryltetralin-type lignans from Camellia oleifera husk.

Two new aryltetralin-type lignans (1-2) were isolated from the dichloromethane fraction of 95% ethanol extract of Camellia oleifera fruit husk. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations of compounds 1-2 were determined by the comparison of measured ECD curves with the quantum chemical calculated ones. The new compounds were tested for their antioxidant activities and cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (Huh-7, H460 and MCF-7). While compounds 1 and 2 only showed slight DPPH radical scavenging activities with the IC50

Active food ingredients production from cold pressed processing residues of Camellia oleifera and Camellia sinensis seeds for regulation of blood pressure and vascular function.

Hypertension is one of the most common illnesses worldwide. Accurate control of blood pressure can help reduce the incidence of complications. Nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) is a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor that increases oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, activating the expression of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), which thickens the vessel wall and ultimately contributes to hypertension. Studies have shown that seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel and Camellia sinensis (L). O. Kuntze (Oolong tea) possesses antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory functio
