Campylobacter hyointestinalis: an opportunistic enteropathogen?

A new case of Campylobacter hyointestinalis-associated diarrhea in a human is reported. The medical history of the patient was significant for immunodeficiency because of an evolutive chronic myeloid leukemia. The diarrhea rapidly stopped after administration of oral erythromycin. No other enteropathogenic agent was found by routine examination of stools. Although neither serology nor autopsy was available, this observation appears to be suggestive of the possible enteropathogenicity of C. hyointestinalis for patients at risk.

Transmission of Campylobacter hyointestinalis from a pig to a human.

We report on a case of human gastroenteritis caused by the pathogen Campylobacter hyointestinalis. Recurrent watery diarrhea and intermittent vomiting were the most significant symptoms of the previously healthy patient. Whole-cell protein electrophoresis and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to identify this Campylobacter species. Investigation of the patient's surroundings led to the recovery of a second C. hyointestinalis strain originating from porcine feces. Subsequent typing of the human and the porcine isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed similar macrorestriction profi

Updating the genomic taxonomy and epidemiology of Campylobacter hyointestinalis.

Campylobacter hyointestinalis is a member of an emerging group of zoonotic Campylobacter spp. that are increasingly identified in both gastric and non-gastric disease in humans. Here, we discovered C. hyointestinalis in three separate classes of New Zealand ruminant livestock; cattle, sheep and deer. To investigate the relevance of these findings we performed a systematic literature review on global C. hyointestinalis epidemiology and used comparative genomics to better understand and classify members of the species. We found that C. hyointestinalis subspecies hyointestinalis has an open pange

Comparison of culture-based methods for detecting Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter hyointestinalis in dairy cattle feces.

Campylobacter is the most commonly reported cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Although cattle are recognized as a potential reservoir for several Campylobacter spp., most detection standards primarily target thermotolerant species, notably Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, possibly underestimating the prevalence of others. This study evaluated the performance of different culture-based methods for detecting Campylobacter spp. in fecal samples collected rectally from dairy cows in a single commercial research herd across four time points. Six combinations of analyses were

Campylobacter hyointestinalis-associated enteritis in Moluccan rusa deer (Cervus timorensis subsp. Moluccensis).

A morphological and bacteriological study on a Campylobacter hyointestinalis-associated enteritis in adult Moluccan rusa deer is described. Necropsied deer were 2 to 2.5 years of age and had been scouring for 1 to 2 months. There was distension of the ileum and excessive corrugation of the mucosa. Microscopic lesions in the small intestine were confined to the ileum. Stunting and fusion of villi, patchy erosion of epithelium and a predominantly neutrophilic infiltrate were features. The inflammatory reaction in caecum and colon was much less severe. Light and scanning electron-microscopical ex

CAMPYLOBACTER HYOINTESTINALIS ISOLATION FROM HOWLER (ALOUATTA CARAYA) AND SPIDER MONKEYS (ATELES FUSCICEPS ROBUSTUS) AT A ZOOLOGIC FACILITY IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS.

Campylobacter hyointestinalis was initially isolated from an asymptomatic black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) in a routine fecal culture examination. Fecal cultures from other individuals in this group and an adjacently housed black-headed spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps robustus) group recovered C. hyointestinalis from all but one of the individuals sampled (1.1 spider monkeys and 2.1 howler monkeys). Concurrently, one spider monkey presented with acute onset severe rectal prolapse and diarrhea. Whole-genome sequencing results of C. hyointestinalis isolates from all individuals were homolog

Zoonotic Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. carried by wild boars in a metropolitan area: occurrence, antimicrobial susceptibility and public health relevance.

Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. are the most reported zoonotic agents in Europe. They can be transmitted from wildlife to humans, and wild boars (Sus scrofa) can harbour them. In the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (MAB, NE Spain) wild boars are found in urbanized areas. To assess the potential public health risk of this increasing wild boar population, we collected stool samples from 130 wild boars from the MAB (June 2015 - February 2016), to determine the Campylobacter and Salmonella occurrence and the antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates. We also investigated the genetic diver

Enteric campylobacter infection in gnotobiotic calves and lambs.

Gnotobiotic calves and lambs were infected orally with Campylobacter jejuni, C coli or C hyointestinalis to assess pathogenicity. All animals were successfully colonised and excreted mucoid faeces but showed no other clinical signs. Campylobacters colonised the large intestine better than the small intestine, in which bacterial numbers decreased with time after infection. Campylobacters were found occasionally in the lumen of crypts in close proximity to epithelial cells and included in a mucus-like material. Lesions were mostly in the large intestine in calves whereas in lambs they were prese

Molecular identification of Helicobacter DNA in human gastric adenocarcinoma tissues using Helicobacter species-specific 16S rRNA PCR amplification and pyrosequencing analysis.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a microaerophilic gram-negative bacterium known to be associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric adenocarcinoma. In the present study, the presence of Helicobacter DNA was investigated using a Helicobacter species-specific 16S rRNA PCR amplification and pyrosequencing analysis in 51 resected gastric adenocarcinomas. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissues of resected gastric adenocarcinomas. PCR primers were designed to amplify the 133-bp PCR fragment in highly conserved regions of the 16S rRNA gene. The sequence of the PCR products

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Cattle in Mongolia.

Poultry and cattle are the major reservoirs of Campylobacter infection in humans. However, no information is available on Campylobacter spp. in cattle in Mongolia. Thus, this study aimed to assess their prevalence and antimicrobial resistance. Between 2019 and 2023, rectal swabs were collected from cattle on dairy farms around Ulaanbaatar city and in total, 35 Campylobacter spp., including 23 C. jejuni, 7 C. hyointestinalis, 4 C. fetus, and 1 C. lari, were isolated. Multilocus sequence typing of C. jejuni cattle isolates revealed substantial genetic diversity and identified 7 sequence types (S

Morphology and immunoperoxidase studies of intestinal adenomatosis in the blue fox, Alopex lagopus.

In a blue fox farm about 300 of 400 weanling pups were affected with diarrhoea and prolapse of the rectum. About 40 pups died in an emaciated state after a few days of disease. Eight pups were submitted for examination. Pathological findings were restricted to the caecum, proximal colon and rectum, with occasional extension to the ileum. Affected areas revealed a thick and rigid intestinal wall, a narrow lumen and a thickened, wrinkled and sometimes ulcerated mucosa. Histologically, the mucosa showed long tortuous crypts outlined by a high pseudostratified epithelium which lacked goblet cells.

Campylobacter magnus sp. nov., isolated from caecal contents of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

During the 2021 European Food Safety Authority coordinated harmonized monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter species in Slovenia, five Campylobacter-like strains were cultured from caeca of a total of 104 domestic pigs that could not be identified using the standard-prescribed biochemical tests or MALDI-TOF MS. The isolates were obtained using the standard ISO 10272 procedure for the isolation of thermotolerant Campylobacter with prolonged cultivation time. Small Campylobacter-like colonies were observed on mCCDA and CASA agar plates after 2-4 days of incubation; dark-field mi

Variation in the limit-of-detection of the ProSpecT Campylobacter microplate enzyme immunoassay in stools spiked with emerging Campylobacter species.

Campylobacter enteritis in humans is primarily associated with C. jejuni/coli infection. The impact of other Campylobacter spp. is likely to be underestimated due to the bias of culture methods towards Campylobacter jejuni/coli diagnosis. Stool antigen tests are becoming increasingly popular and appear generally less species-specific. A review of independent studies of the ProSpecT® Campylobacter Microplate enzyme immunoassay (EIA) developed for C. jejuni/coli showed comparable diagnostic results to culture methods but the examination of non-jejuni/coli Campylobacter spp. was limited and the l

[Detection of Campylobacter species by using polymerase chain reaction and nonradioactive labeled DNA probe].

We have detected Campylobacter species which are now recognized as major pathogens of acute diarrheal disease in humans using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a nonradioactive labeled DNA probe. Diagnosis of Campylobacter enteritis without doing culture from stool samples is of great benefit in the laboratory. Two oligonucleotide primers (20 mer) complementary to a unique sequence of the DNA encoding ribosomal RNA (rRNA) of Campylobacter jejuni for PCR were synthesized by solid-phase phosphoamidite method. Amplified target DNA of 275 base pairs could be resolved on ethidium bromide-stained
