Campylobacter lari Vertebral Osteomyelitis.

We report a case of Campylobacter lari vertebral osteomyelitis with iliopsoas abscess. This is the first case report of vertebral osteomyelitis due to C. lari, which was identified from a vertebral biopsy sample collected using CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy in a patient without obvious episodes of immunodeficiency. Cultureing using the HK semisolid medium aided in pathogen ideutification. It is important to make every possible effort to identify the causative pathogen in vertebral osteomyelitis.

Bloodstream infection caused by Campylobacter lari.

We describe a case of bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by Campylobacter lari in a 58-year-old man diagnosed with lumbar pyogenic spondylitis. Anaerobic blood cultures, taken on the day of admission and on hospital day 4, were positive after 30 h of incubation, although no bacteria were detected by Gram staining. After subculture on 5 % sheep blood agar for 2 days at 35 °C in a 5 % CO2 environment, capnophilic, curved, gram-negative bacteria were recovered. The bacteria were identified as C. lari using a combination of phenotypic identification methods and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Th

Purulent pleurisy caused by Campylobacter lari.

An 80-year-old debilitated patient developed purulent pleurisy caused by a Campylobacter lari isolate. The patient underwent surgical drainage and received antibiotic therapy with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and ofloxacin. Antibiotic susceptibility data showed that the isolate was fully sensitive to clarithromycin, tetracycline, aminoglycosides. and ciprofloxacin. Imipenem and amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid were the most active beta-lactam agents.

Development of species-specific DNA probes for Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, and Campylobacter lari by polymerase chain reaction fingerprinting.

The application of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fingerprinting assays enables discrimination between species and strains of microorganisms. PCR primers aiming at arbitrary sequences in combination with primers directed against the repetitive extragenic palindrome (REP) or enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) motifs generate isolate-specific DNA banding patterns. Analysis of these PCR fingerprints obtained for 33 isolates of Campylobacter jejuni, 30 isolates of Campylobacter coli, and 8 isolates of Campylobacter lari revealed that besides generation of isolate-specific frag

Genetic Diversity and Resistome Analysis of Campylobacter lari Isolated from Gulls in Croatia.

Campylobacter lari is a thermotolerant bacterium that sporadically causes gastrointestinal diseases in humans and can be found in wildlife and the environment. C. lari is an understudied species, especially in wild birds such as gulls. Gulls are potentially good carriers of pathogens due to their opportunistic behavior and tendency to gather in large flocks. During winter and their breeding period, 1753 gulls were captured, and cloacal swabs were taken to be tested for the presence of C. lari. From isolated bacteria, the DNA was sequenced, and sequence types (ST) were determined. Sixty-four sw

[Campylobacter lari bacteremia during treatment of pure red cell aplasia following major ABO-mismatched hematopoietic stem cell transplantation].

Campylobacter lari is a rare cause of bacteremia in Campylobacter spp. Clinical course and symptoms vary by report, and no standard approaches to antimicrobial selection and duration of treatment have been established. A 68-year-old man who underwent haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from a major ABO-incompatible donor with post-transplant cyclophosphamide for myelodysplastic syndromes developed pure red cell anemia and post-transfusion iron overload. On day 360, the patient developed fever and spiral-shaped gram-negative bacteria were detected by blood culture. The

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the consensus detection of human pathogenic Campylobacter species.

Most rapid identification methods for Campylobacter are designed to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli). A growing number of thermosensitive Campylobacter species are now gaining recognition as emerging human pathogens. Methods are lacking for the rapid screening of these emerging species. Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that allows for the rapid and cost-effective detection of bacteria. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of thermotolerant Campylobacter strains isolated from food animals in Ethiopia.

Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. are frequent causes of diarrhoea in humans worldwide mostly originating from poultry. It has been suggested that extensive veterinary use of antibiotics is largely responsible for resistance in human isolates. During a 4-month period from January to April 2004, 192 Campylobacter spp. were isolated from fecal samples of 485 healthy food animals. The in vitro susceptibility to 12 antibiotics was determined by the agar disk diffusion method. Among the 192 Campylobacter spp. isolated, 135 (70.3%) were identified to be C. jejuni, 51 (26.6%) were C. coli and 6 (3.1%

Antibiotic resistance profile of Campylobacter species recovered from some freshwater milieu in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Freshwater is a major source of human waterborne infections caused by Campylobacter species. The extensive use of antibiotics is capable of causing the emergence and spread of Campylobacter strains that are resistant to the antibiotics, making campylobacteriosis more difficult to treat and persistent in the environment. This study evaluated the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Campylobacter species in freshwater from the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one freshwater samples were collected, yielding 302 presumptive Campylobacter

Prevalence and risk factors for thermotolerant species of Campylobacter in poultry meat at retail in Europe.

The thermotolerant species Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter lari and Campylobacter upsaliensis are the causative agents of the human illness called campylobacteriosis. This infection represents a threat for the health of consumers in Europe. It is well known that poultry meat is an important food vehicle of Campylobacter infection. As emerged from the reported scientific literature published between 2006 and 2016, poultry meat sold at retail level in Europe represents an important source of the pathogen. The contamination level of poultry meat sold at retail can vary dep
