Campylobacter rectus (formerly Wolinella recta) in periodontitis lesions was studied relative to age and sex distribution, relationship to disease-active periodontitis, response to periodontal debridement and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility. Subgingival C. rectus was collected with paper points, transported in VMGA III and plated onto nonselective enriched brucella blood agar and Hammond's selective medium for C. rectus, both incubated anaerobically. C. rectus was recovered from 80% of 1654 periodontitis patients. Although the organism showed similar age and sex occurrence, its proportio

Campylobacter rectus is a campylobacterium considered to be a primary periodontal pathogen. Thus, C. rectus has rarely been isolated from extraoral specimens, especially in the thoracic region. We herein report a case of thoracic empyema in which Campylobacter infection was suspected after Gram staining of the pleural effusion, and C. rectus was isolated using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Fusobacterium nucleatum was also detected. Molecular identification was performed using polymerase chain reaction amplification and a sequencing analysis of th

We present a rare case of destructive osteomyelitis of the sternum caused by Parvimonas micra and Campylobacter rectus A previously healthy female patient in her 40s presented to the emergency department due to a spontaneous rupture of an abscess located to the chest wall. Imaging confirmed abscess formation with osteomyelitis of the sternum. Emergent surgical debridement was performed, blood and bone cultures were taken and the patient received antibiotic treatment. Cultures of the bone and deep tissue revealed infection with Parvimonas micra and Campylobacter rectus, both being members of th

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis is a severe inflammatory process of the extensor compartment of the hand. Common pathogens involved in this condition are Streptococcus and Staphylococcus; however, in immunocompromised patients, rare pathogens can be implicated.
CASE REPORT: Herein a rare case of a 61-year-old female who developed severe extensor tenosynovitis from Campylobacter rectus after a dog bite is presented. The patient required surgical debridement, four weeks of doxycycline and amoxicillin-clavulanate antibiotic therapy and physical therapy to successfully cure her C. r

Campylobacter rectus, formerly known as Wolinella recta, is an anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus, generally recognized as an agent responsible for severe periodontitis; only two cases of extra-oral infections have been reported. The first case of septicemia with C rectus and Actinomyces odontolyticus is described in a 37-year-old farmer who suffered from severe sacroiliitis. Also presented are a review of C rectus in human pathology, and a brief review of pyogenic sacroiliitis, a rather rare disease.

Pneumonia caused by Campylobacter rectus is very rare. Herein, we describe the treatment course and experiences of a patient with pneumonia caused by Campylobacter rectus. A 64-year-old woman with intermittent hemoptysis and part lung necrosis indicated by radiography was admitted to our hospital on March 15, 2021. After admission, a CT (Computer tomography)-guided percutaneous lung biopsy was identified as Campylobacter rectus positive by bacterial culture and metagenomic sequencing. The hemoptysis resolved, and the lesions in the right lower lung were gradually absorbed after treatment with

We report a fatal subdural empyema caused by Campylobacter rectus in a 66-year-old female who developed acute onset of confusion, dysarthria, and paresis in her left extremities. A CT scan showed hypodensity in a crescentic formation with a mild mid-line shift. She had a bruise on her forehead caused by a fall several days before admission, which initially raised subdural hematoma (SDH) diagnosis, and a burr hole procedure was planned. However, her condition deteriorated on the admission night, and she died before dawn. An autopsy revealed that she had subdural empyema (SDE) caused by Campylob

Campylobacter rectus is an important periodontal pathogen in humans. A surface-layer (S-layer) protein and a cytotoxic activity have been characterized and are thought to be its major virulence factors. The cytotoxic activity was suggested to be due to a pore-forming protein toxin belonging to the RTX (repeats in the structural toxins) family. In the present work, two closely related genes, csxA and csxB (for C. rectus S-layer and RTX protein) were cloned from C. rectus and characterized. The Csx proteins appear to be bifunctional and possess two structurally different domains. The N-terminal

The authors report the first case of orbital osteomyelitis due to Campylobacter in a 50-year-old male on a background of poor dental health. Campylobacter rectus is a member of the human oral flora and is usually associated with periodontal disease. There are 16 reported cases of non-oral C. rectus invasive soft-tissue infections, of which only one reports of osteolytic changes. In our patient, it is hypothesised that contiguous spread of periodontal infection with C. rectus seeded infection to the orbit. C. rectus infection is a rare but significant pathogen that should be considered as the e

Campylobacter rectus is associated with fetal exposure and low birthweight in humans. C. rectus also invades placental tissues and induces fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) in mice, along with overexpression of Toll-like receptors (TLR4), suggesting that TLR4 may mediate placental immunity and IUGR in mice. To test this hypothesis we examined the effect of in vitro TLR4 neutralization on trophoblastic proinflammatory activity and studied the IUGR phenotype in a congenic TLR4-mutant mouse strain after in vivo C. rectus infection. Human trophoblasts were pretreated with TLR4 neutraliz

Oral health conditions and cerebral small vessel disease, such as white matter lesions or cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), are associated with the incidence of stroke. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between oral health conditions (serum IgG titers of periodontal pathogens) with the presence or severity of CMBs in acute stroke patients. From January 2013 to April 2016, acute stroke patients were registered in two hospitals. Serum samples were evaluated for antibody titers against 9 periodontal pathogens using the ELISA method. The cut-off points for reactivity (the positi

The localization and distribution of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Campylobacter rectus and Actinomyces viscosus were studied in human periodontal pockets. After obtaining voluntary consent from 9 patients, 12 teeth and their surrounding periodontal tissue with advanced adult periodontitis were extracted carefully so as not to change the structure of the periodontal pockets. The specimens were processed into serial sections. One of the sections was stained with Brown & Brenn-modified Gram stain to observe the distribution of bacteria. The others were stained immunohistochemically by the Labelled S

Campylobacter rectus and Solobacterium moorei are anaerobic Gram-negative and Gram-positive rods, respectively, that are occasionally members of the human oral flora. Bacteraemia has rarely been reported. We present the first case of mixed C. rectus-S. moorei bacteraemia in an individual with diabetes and human immunodeficiency virus infection. Both bacteria were successfully identified by MALDI-TOF MS.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric appendicitis is increasingly recognized as involving dysbiosis of the appendiceal microbiota rather than purely mechanical obstruction. Clinical strategies now include emergency appendectomy and elective surgery after conservative antibiotic therapy, often dictated by institutional policy rather than standardized disease staging. Whether distinct microbial signatures characterize children managed by different surgical pathways remains unclear. This study examined oral and appendiceal microbiota-particularly Campylobacter rectus and Veillonella spp.-and their association w

A unique case report on campylobacter rectus infection leading to acute motor axonal neuropathy in a pediatric patient. Campylobacter rectus is an anaerobic bacterium found in the oral cavity. While it has been linked to periodontal disease, its association with acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN), a variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, remains unverified. The majority of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases related to Campylobacter are attributed to the species Campylobacter jejuni. A 14-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with sepsis. About 1 week before his admission, the patient sust

BACKGROUND: It is hypothesized that scaling and root planning (SRP) with adjunct photodynamic therapy (PDT) is more effective in reducing Campylobacter rectus (C. rectus) from the oral biofilm (OB) among patients with periodontitis, than SRP alone. The objective was to compare the effectiveness of SRP with and without adjunct PDT in reducing OB C. rectus counts of patients with periodontitis.
METHODS: Chronic gastritis patients diagnosed with periodontitis were included. Therapeutically, the patients were divided into 2-groups. Patients in the test- and control-groups underwent SRP with and w

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter rectus is a gram-negative rod, and Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive coccus, both of which are oral anaerobes that cause chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can cause bacteremia and systemic diseases, including osteomyelitis. Hematogenous osteomyelitis caused by anaerobic bacteria is uncommon, and to date, there have been no reports of mixed bacteremia with C. rectus and P. micra. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of the femur caused by anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of C. rectus and P. micra caused by chronic periodontitis.

Intra-abdominal abscesses mostly derive from the intra-abdominal viscera. Campylobacter spp. are Gram-negative rods which are known to cause oral infections but rarely have been documented to cause extra-intestinal infections resulting in abscesses. We report an atypical case of Campylobacter rectus (C. rectus) and Peptostreptococcus spp. bacteria isolated from a perinephric abscess presenting as abdominal pain. Abscesses originating from outside the gastrointestinal tract have been reported in other similar case reports infecting the head, brain, and thoracic wall amongst others. The potentia

Campylobacter species are frequently isolated from fecal specimens of patients with diarrheal illness. Several Campylobacter species are commonly isolated from the oral cavity. In contrast, Campylobacter species are rarely isolated from extra-oro-intestinal abscesses. Reported here are four cases of extra-oro-intestinal abscesses due to polymicrobial flora, including Campylobacter species. The first case is a 35-year-old woman who was diagnosed with a brain abscess caused by C. gracilis, Streptococcus constellatus, and anaerobic Gram-positive cocci. The second case is a 65-year-old man with a

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to compare and assess the risk of periodontitis due to the presence of four putative periodontopathic bacteria viz., Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter rectus, Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens. To fulfil the above objective, polymerase Chain reaction using the primers targeting 16S rRNA gene of the bacterial species was performed with the subgingival plaque collected from the permanent first molars of type 1 diabetic children and age matched healthy children.
RESULTS: The prevalence of periodontal pathogens in diabetic and healthy chil
