Cancer survivorship is becoming a newly defined entity. Cancer therapies can produce many late physical effects by adversely affecting every organ system. Psychosocial issues that have been studied include: psychiatric, self-concept, school performance, and behavioral adjustment, employment and insurance discrimination, and marital status. Quality-of-life assessments in adult survivors is comparable to controls but is diminished for children with disease or treatments that affect the CNS. The greatest fear for cancer survivors is the 10 to 20 times greater risk of SMN as compared with persons

Colorectal cancer (CRC) survival is influenced by numerous factors, including age, sex, race and ethnicity, familial cancer syndromes, stage and location of tumor, and comorbid conditions. The 5-year survival rate for patients with stage I CRC is 91%, but it is only 15% for patients with stage IV CRC. These survivors may experience multiple health issues. Gastrointestinal dysfunction is common, even years after treatment. This can include chronic diarrhea, occurring in approximately half of patients, and fecal incontinence, which is common after radiation therapy. Bladder dysfunction can occur

In the United States, prostate cancer is the most common nonskin cancer in men. Approximately 12.6% of US men will be diagnosed with this cancer in their lifetimes. Although the overall 5-year relative survival rate is high (96.8%), ethnic and racial disparities have been shown to affect survival. There also are genetic risks. If the family history of the patient includes familial cancers, the patient and family members should be referred for genetic counseling and testing for cancer-associated sequence variants. Prostate cancer treatments have significant long-term effects. After radical pros

Patients who have completed therapy for malignant disease face many problems, including the possibility and persistent fear of recurrent disease or a new malignancy. The side effects of therapy, including surgical scars, radiation effects or damage to physiological function may strongly influence patients' complete recovery. Depletion of financial resources or a lengthy interruption of employment may present serious difficulties, particularly if patients cannot function as well as before. They may also find it difficult to buy life insurance, or mistakenly believe that they are not eligible to

Women who have survived cancer may need guidance in choosing a method of contraception. This paper reviews the evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of available methods of contraception for cancer survivors and concludes that the Copper T380A intrauterine device (IUD), a highly effective, reversible, long-acting, hormone-free method should be considered a first-line contraceptive option for women with a history of a hormonally mediated cancer. However, the levonorgestrel-containing IUD may be preferable for women being treated with tamoxifen and women who have survived non-hormonally me

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of cataracts in cancer survivors and their association with patients' demographic characteristics, treatment, and cancer type and the perceived effect cancer had had on their overall health.
METHODS: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional review of the results of a survey of long-term cancer survivors who had been treated at the authors' institution.
RESULTS: Of 3936 respondents to the survey, 168 (4%) reported having had cataracts. Cataracts were most frequent in survivors of hematologic diseases (chronic leukemia, 17%; myeloma, 13%; acute leukemia, 9

Cancer survivors are at increased risk for recurrence of their original malignancy; development of second primary malignancies; and medical, developmental, and psychologic problems resulting from cancer therapy, genetic predisposition to cancer, and other risk factors. Surveillance following curative cancer treatment generally includes interval history and physical examinations every six months for five years. Thereafter, histories and examinations are recommended annually for breast cancer; every three months for two years, then every six months for three to five years for colorectal cancer;

BACKGROUND: An increased risk of becoming overweight has been reported for childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), in particular leukemia survivors, although the evidence is inconclusive.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the prevalence of overweight in CCSs, with a focus on leukemia survivors, compared it with their peers, and determined potential risk factors.
DESIGN: As part of the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, we sent a questionnaire between 2007 and 2013 to all Swiss resident CCSs aged <21 y at diagnosis who had survived ≥5 y. We calculated body mass index (BMI) from medical records at diagnos

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors are more vulnerable to future cancers than individuals without cancer. As such, it is important to understand whether survivors are engaging in cancer screenings.
METHODS: The screening practices reported in response to the 2000 Health Interview Survey of 2151 individuals with cancer were examined and compared to those of 30,195 individuals without cancer.
RESULTS: The proportion of cancer survivors obtaining screenings ranged from 21% to 77%. Compared to individuals without cancer, women with cancer were more likely to have had a mammogram (odds ratio [OR]=1.8,

Pain is a common problem in cancer survivors, especially in the first few years after treatment. In the longer term, approximately 5% to 10% of survivors have chronic severe pain that interferes with functioning. The prevalence is much higher in certain subpopulations, such as breast cancer survivors. All cancer treatment modalities have the potential to cause pain. Currently, the approach to managing pain in cancer survivors is similar to that for chronic cancer-related pain, pharmacotherapy being the principal treatment modality. Although it may be appropriate to continue strong opioids in s

Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment allow for better survival outcomes and, more importantly, for higher curability of cancer. Female cancer survivors often need effective advice concerning the choice of birth control methods. The majority of gynecologists are reluctant to propose anything other than barrier methods due to lack of information concerning safe use of more effective contraceptives. The aim of the paper was to summarize indications and contraindications to different methods of contraception available to cancer survivors in Poland.

During the next decade, a rapid increase in the number of new cancer diagnoses in the population as well as a growing number of cancer survivors can be expected. Cancer is anticipated to exceed cardiovascular disease as the primary cause of mortality in the United States population. Despite efforts in tobacco control, the aging of the population and obesity epidemic will contribute toward the increasing incidence of cancer. Although oncology specialists will continue to play a critical role in the diagnosis and initial treatment of patients with cancer, primary care providers will need to play

BACKGROUND: This paper evaluates psychometric properties of a recently developed measure focusing on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of long-term cancer survivors, the Quality of Life in Adult Survivors scale (QLACS), in a sample of breast cancer survivors. This represents an important area of study, given the large number of breast cancer patients surviving many years post diagnosis.
METHODS: Analyses are based on an 8-year follow-up of a sample of breast cancer survivors who participated in an earlier study conducted in 1995. Participants were re-contacted in 2003 and those who we

There is limited information addressing the occurrence of esophageal strictures among the growing population of survivors of childhood cancer. Using the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, we analyzed data from 17,121 5-year survivors and 3400 siblings to determine the prevalence and risk factors for esophageal strictures. Prevalence among survivors was 2.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.8-2.2%), representing a 7.6-fold increased risk compared to siblings. Factors significantly associated with risk of esophageal stricture included diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma, greater chest radiation dose, yo

BACKGROUND: Sources of cancer-related information are rapidly increasing, but little is known about whether the health information available to cancer survivors meets their needs.
METHODS: The authors surveyed 778 Massachusetts cancer survivors 3, 6, or 11 years after their diagnosis for 6 common cancers. They analyzed their views about 5 types of cancer-related information, the quality of that information, barriers to getting it, their experiences with physicians providing cancer care, and the quality of their cancer care.
RESULTS: Among 462 (61%) respondents who reported needing cancer inf

PURPOSE: We investigated sleep disturbances among cancer survivors compared to similarly aged women without cancer history.
METHODS: We identified 2067 women with a history of cancer other than breast or non-melanoma skin cancer at enrollment in the Sister Study, a US-wide cohort of women with a family history of breast cancer. Cancer survivors were matched with up to 5 cancer-free women (N = 9717) on age at enrollment. An index age (for covariate classification) was defined as the age at cancer diagnosis for survivors and the same age for their matched comparators. Sleep disturbances include

The number of cancer survivors is increasing globally. More than 15.5 million Americans in 2016 and 1.3 million Koreans in 2013 were living with cancer history. This growing population is expected to increase due to marked development of cancer treatment and early detection. Especially, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in Korean women with relatively favorable 5-year survival rate. Cancer survivors generally face various physical, psychological, and social problems including late-effect or long-term effect after cancer treatment and high risk for second primary cancer and comorbi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As people are living longer after a diagnosis and primary treatment for cancer, or indeed living with cancer as a chronic disease, new problems are emerging in this growing population of so-called 'survivors'. Persistent or chronic pain is one of the commonest complaints, arising from the tissue damage caused by the original neoplasm, consequences of surgery and other therapies, and - especially in older people - multimorbidity. This review explores some of the principle causes and mechanisms of this phenomenon and reviews the evidence for their management.
RECENT FINDINGS:

As a result of advances in early detection and treatment, cancer has become a curable disease for some and a chronic illness for others; persons living with a history of cancer are now described as cancer survivors rather than cancer victims. From 1971 to 2001, the number of cancer survivors in the United States increased from 3.0 million to 9.8 million. To update those data, published in 2004, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and CDC analyzed cancer incidence and follow-up information from nine Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) programs to estimate the number of persons in

OBJECTIVE: To assess obstetric and neonatal outcomes in women with a prior episode of cancer.
METHODS: Data were obtained from a linkage between the Scottish Cancer Registry and routinely collected data from Scottish maternity hospitals. Obstetric outcomes in a first pregnancy which ended between 1980 and 2005 were compared in 917 women with, and 5,496 women without, a previous history of cancer.
RESULTS: The mean age at delivery was 29 years (standard deviation 5.66) and 26 years (standard deviation 5.62) in the exposed and unexposed groups respectively (P<.001). Multiple logistic regressio
