Beyond Solanaceae: incorporation of feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine into Cannabaceae lignins.

The ferulic acid amides, feruloyltyramine and feruloyloctopamine, have been widely reported as integral constituents in the lignins in several species of Solanaceae in which they function as authentic lignin monomers. In the present study, we demonstrate that these ferulic acid amides are likewise incorporated into the lignins of species within Cannabaceae, including hemp (Cannabis sativa), hops (Humulus lupulus), and European nettle tree (Celtis australis). Structural analyses using derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC) and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR) sp

Cannabinoids From Trema micranthum (L.) Blume (Cannabaceae): A Cannabinoid Profiling System.

Trema micranthum (L.) Blume is a species from the Cannabaceae botanical family, present all over the tropics. A recent study conducted by our group identified the presence of cannabidiol (CBD), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiolic acid, and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid-A in T. micranthum extracts. Their presence in the plant's fruit, inflorescence, and leaf extracts was detected and quantified. T. micranthum has been identified as a potential new source of cannabinoids such as CBD. The present work focuses on a new Cannabinoid Profiling System (CPS) to present a wide view of cannabinoid chemi

A pharmacological roadmap for the Cannabaceae family: Prioritizing the therapeutic potential of neglected genera beyond Cannabis and Humulus.

The Cannabaceae family presents a significant paradox in modern pharmacology; it is simultaneously one of the most intensely researched and most profoundly neglected plant families. The immense scientific, cultural, and economic significance of Cannabis and Humulus has cast a long shadow, obscuring the potential of the family's other nine genera. This paper provides the first comprehensive synthesis of the available ethnobotanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological data across all 11 genera to systematically expose this research disparity. It argues that genera such as Trema, Celtis, and Apha

Cannabinoids from inflorescences fractions of Trema orientalis (L.) Blume (Cannabaceae) against human pathogenic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Cannabinoids; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN), might show antibacterial activity. Trema orientalis is a species in the Cannabaceae that is closely related to Cannabis through plastome phylogenetic evidence. This species is widely distributed throughout tropical Asia and is used as traditional medicine, particularly for the treatment of infectious diseases. However, no studies on the antibacterial activity of cannabinoid-containing inflorescences extracts are available. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine cannabinoid content and antibacter

GISH painting of the Y chromosomes suggests advanced phases of sex chromosome evolution in three dioecious Cannabaceae species (Humulus lupulus, H. japonicus, and Cannabis sativa).

In plants, dioecy is relatively rare, and it involves sex chromosome systems that often developed independently over time. These characteristics make dioecious plants an attractive model to study sex chromosome evolution. To clarify the patterns of plant sex chromosome evolution, studies should be performed on a wide range of dioecious species. It is interesting to study the sex chromosomes in related species that evolved during a long period of independent sex chromosome evolution. The Cannabaceae family includes three dioecious species with heteromorphic sex chromosomes. Cannabis sativa and

Mucilage cells in the flower of Rosales species: reflections on morphological diversity, classification, and functions.

The presence of mucilage cells in plants, studied mainly in vegetative organs, is a condition shared by several taxonomic groups and aspects related to their diversity have been discussed with systematic purposes. This study explores the flower distribution and classification of mucilage cells in Rosales species, with inferences about flower functions. Floral buds from fifty-seven species representing seven of nine families recognized in the Rosales were sampled and processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Mucilage cells were found in about 40% of the studied species of Cannab

Impact of copper-based fungicides on the antioxidant quality of ethanolic hop extracts.

Hops contain a variety of compounds possessing antioxidant capacity including phenolic and polyphenolic compounds as well as α- and β- acids. These compounds may contribute to the oxidative stability of beer during brewing and storage. Hop plants may be treated with copper-based fungicides (CBFs) which have been shown to increase the total copper content of harvested hop cones; however, copper ions are well known to catalyze the generation of reactive oxygen species production in beer and may negatively impact its oxidative stability. Increased copper content in CBF-treated hops has been previ

Bioactive metabolites and antidiabetic activity of Cannabis sativa-derived endophytic fungi.

Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabaceae) has long been valued in traditional medicine, including Ayurveda, for managing disorders such as diabetes, cancer, and kidney diseases. Although the plant itself is known to influence glucose metabolism, the therapeutic potential of its associated endophytic fungi remains underexplored. In this study, 56 fungal isolates were obtained from different tissues of C. sativa and evaluated for antidiabetic activity. Two isolates, identified by ITS1/4 rDNA sequencing as Aspergillus micronesiensis and Nodulisporium verrucosum, exhibited strong inhibitory effects on α-am

Trema micranthum (L.) Blume as a new source of cannabinoids.

Trema micranthum (Cannabaceae) has emerged as a promising new source of cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD). Given the substantial medicinal demand for cannabinoids and the regulatory challenges associated with Cannabis sativa due to the presence of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), this study sought to explore the presence of CBD, THC, and their precursors, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA A) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), in various parts of Trema micranthum using UHPLC-HRMS/MS (Orbitrap). Extracts from fruits, leaves, inflorescences, and stems were obtained using a methanol/hexane
