Cannabis and Cannabis Edibles: A Review.

Cannabis is an excellent natural source of fiber and various bioactive cannabinoids. So far, at least 120 cannabinoids have been identified, and more novel cannabinoids are gradually being unveiled by detailed cannabis studies. However, cannabinoids in both natural and isolated forms are especially vulnerable to oxygen, heat, and light. Therefore, a diversity of cannabinoids is associated with their chemical instability to a large extent. The research status of structural conversion of cannabinoids is introduced. On the other hand, the use of drug-type cannabis and the phytocannabinoids thereo

The toxicology of cannabis and cannabis prohibition.

The acute side effects caused by cannabis use are mainly related to psyche and cognition, and to circulation. Euphoria, anxiety, changes in sensory perception, impairment of memory and psychomotor performance are common effects after a dose is taken that exceeds an individually variable threshold. Cannabis consumption may increase heart rate and change blood pressure, which may have serious consequences in people with heart disease. Effects of chronic use may be induction of psychosis and development of dependency to the drug. Effects on cognitive abilities seem to be reversible after abstinen

Cannabis use and cannabis use disorder.

Cannabis use disorder (CUD) is an underappreciated risk of using cannabis that affects ~10% of the 193 million cannabis users worldwide. The individual and public health burdens are less than those of other forms of drug use, but CUD accounts for a substantial proportion of persons seeking treatment for drug use disorders owing to the high global prevalence of cannabis use. Cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational enhancement therapy and contingency management can substantially reduce cannabis use and cannabis-related problems, but enduring abstinence is not a common outcome. No pharmacothe

[Cannabis use and cannabis use disorders].

Cannabis use and cannabis use disorders have taken on a new social significance as a result of partial legalization. In 2021 a total of 4.5 million adults (8.8%) in Germany used the drug. The number of users as well as problematic use have risen in the last decade. Cannabis products with a high delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content and their regular use lead to changes in cannabinoid receptor distribution in the brain and to modifications in the structure and functionality of relevant neuronal networks. The consequences of cannabinoid use are particularly in the psychological functioning

Association of State Cannabis Legalization With Cannabis Use Disorder and Cannabis Poisoning.

IMPORTANCE: Whether state implementation of medical and recreational cannabis laws is associated with increased cannabis use disorder (CUD) and/or cannabis poisoning among adults is not evident. OBJECTIVE: To examine state-level medical and recreational cannabis laws' associations with CUD and cannabis poisoning, overall and by sex and age subgroups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this longitudinal cohort study, state-level CUD and cannabis poisoning diagnoses from January 2011 to December 2021 were examined across all 50 US states and the District of Columbia before and after the imp

[Cannabis].

Cannabis produces a resin, the psychotropic effects of which are known since the High Antiquity. It induces euphoria, a feeling of pleasant dreaminess. Nevertheless, psychiatric disturbances such as psychomotor deficiency states or acute oniroïd states were described in heavy users countries. These psychiatric disorders put the accent on the starting or catalysing role of cannabis on the premorbid personality. The experimental studies of cannabis on the premorbid personality. The experimental studies of cannabis and its active substance (delta-g-tetrahydrocanabinol) bring information on this p

Integrative Medicine: Cannabis and Cannabis-Related Drugs.

Cannabis is a genus of flowering herbs in the Cannabaceae family. Federal law defines dried plant material preparations of the subspecies Cannabis sativa as marijuana. The term cannabis refers to all products derived from Cannabis plants. The active compounds in cannabis are cannabinoids, which include delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive component, whereas CBD has no psychoactive effects. There are three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cannabis-related drugs. Dronabinol and nabilone (Cesamet) are approved for chemotherapy-induced nausea

Complex cannabis use patterns: Associations with cannabis consequences and cannabis use disorder symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: Historically, cannabis researchers have assumed a single mode and product of cannabis (e.g., smoking plant). However, patterns of use, products (e.g., concentrates, edibles), and modes (e.g. blunts, vaporizers) are diversifying. This study sought to: 1) classify cannabis users into groups based on their use of the full range of cannabis products, and 2) examine user group differences on demographics, cannabis consequences and cannabis use disorder (CUD) symptomatology. METHODS: In a sample of college students (data collected in Fall 2017), who used cannabis in the past year (N = 1

Accurately classifying cannabis blunt use as tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use.

BACKGROUND: Historically, blunt use constituted tobacco-cannabis co-use based on the products available for creating blunts (e.g., hollowed-out cigars filled with cannabis). With the introduction of tobacco-free blunt wraps (e.g., hemp wraps), blunt use now may constitute tobacco-cannabis co-use or exclusive cannabis use. We examined adolescents' use of tobacco and tobacco-free blunt products and highlighted how misclassification of tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use may occur if products used to make blunts are not assessed. METHODS: 4855 students from eight Connecticut hi

Older Nonmedical and Medical Cannabis Users: Health Characteristics, Cannabis Use Patterns, and Cannabis Sources

Abstract Despite rapidly growing number of older medical cannabis users, research on them is scant. In this study, we examined medical and nonmedical cannabis users aged 50+ on health-related characteristics and cannabis use patterns and sources. Hypotheses were that compared to nonmedical users, medical users are more likely to have physical and mental health problems, use healthcare services, discuss their drug use with a healthcare professional, use cannabis more frequently, and purchase cannabis from a medical dispensary and other sources rather than obtain it as a gift, share someone else

Urinary Cannabis Metabolite Concentrations in Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is characterized by recurrent episodes of intractable emesis associated with heavy use of cannabis. Recognition of CHS can be problematic due to the lack of specific biomarkers, which can point the clinician to the diagnosis. We present, retrospectively, a series of adolescent/young adult patients who presented to a pediatric gastroenterology (GI) service with acute on chronic nausea and vomiting, subsequently found to have CHS with associated elevated urinary cannabis metabolite concentrations. METHODS: We describe 15 patients referred to our pe

Cannabis Use Frequency and Cannabis-Related Consequences in High-Risk Young Adults Across Cannabis Legalization.

IMPORTANCE: A key concern about recreational cannabis legalization is increases in use and adverse consequences, particularly among young adults (aged 18-29 years) who have the highest prevalence of cannabis use, and especially in higher-risk, more vulnerable young adults. However, few longitudinal studies have examined patterns of cannabis consumption in high-risk young adults over the course of legalization. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in cannabis use frequency and cannabis-related consequences over recreational cannabis legalization in Canada in a longitudinal sample of high-risk young a

Modes of cannabis administration, cannabis and tobacco co-use, and associations with respiratory and cannabis use outcomes in a permissive medical cannabis state.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed differences in the prevalence and correlates of different cannabis modes of administration (MOAs) between those reporting co-use (past 30-day nicotine/tobacco and cannabis use and or cannabis-only use. METHOD: Participants were adults reporting past 30-day cannabis use (n=3,488) who provided data for a repeated cross-sectional online survey (September 2020-September 2024). Prevalence and relative rankings of past 30-day use of nine different cannabis MOAs (smoking, vaping, dabbing, eating, drinking, oil, lotion, dissolvable, blunt use) were examined across past

Cannabis arteritis.

Cannabis is the most consumed psychoactive substance by young people. Chronic use of cannabis can lead to cannabis arteritis, which is a very rare peripheral vascular disease similar to Buerger's disease. It is affecting young adults, especially men, consuming cannabis. A 27-year old woman, with no particular past medical history except for long-term use of cannabis and tobacco developed a digital necrosis in the left hand. She denied using other illicit drugs. Doppler ultrasound examination of the upper limbs was unremarkable. Toxicological analysis revealed the presence of cannabis in both b

Cannabis, 1977.

Recent advances in development of immunoassay methods for marijuana constituents in body fluids provide a rapid means of detection for forensic purposes and a useful research tool for accurate quantitation of dose-response relation. Therapeutic possibilities of cannabis, such as reduction in intraocular pressure and bronchodilatation, may stimulate development of synthetic cannabinoid derivatives that meet acceptable standards of safety and effiicacy for treatment of glaucoma and asthma. Cannabis use may have harmful short- and long-term impacts on health. Potentially serious short-term effect

Reaching out towards cannabis: approach-bias in heavy cannabis users predicts changes in cannabis use.

AIMS: Repeated drug exposure can lead to an approach-bias, i.e. the relatively automatically triggered tendencies to approach rather that avoid drug-related stimuli. Our main aim was to study this approach-bias in heavy cannabis users with the newly developed cannabis Approach Avoidance Task (cannabis-AAT) and to investigate the predictive relationship between an approach-bias for cannabis-related materials and levels of cannabis use, craving, and the course of cannabis use. DESIGN, SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional assessment and six-month follow-up in 32 heavy cannabis users and 39

Cannabis arteritis.

The main causes of arteriopathy in young patients include drugs, metabolic diseases, pseudoxanthoma elasticum and Buerger's disease. Arteritis due to Cannabis indica was first reported in 1960, and the role of this drug as a risk factor for arteritis was confirmed in several subsequent publications. A 38-year-old smoker with no previous contributory medical history except for long-standing cannabis abuse developed a dry necrotic lesion of the left big toe. Imaging examinations revealed proximal arteriopathy of the lower limbs that predominated on the left side. He had no atherogenic or thrombo

Simultaneous Cannabis and Alcohol Use among Medical Cannabis Patients.

Background: During the past two decades of cannabis legalization, the prevalence of medical cannabis (MC) use has increased and there has also been an upward trend in alcohol consumption. As less restricted cannabis laws generate more adult cannabis users, there is concern that more individuals may be simultaneously using medical cannabis with alcohol. A few studies have examined simultaneous use of medical cannabis with alcohol, but none of those studies also assessed patients' current or previous non-medical cannabis use. This paper explores simultaneous alcohol and medical cannabis use amon

International cannabis policies and their association with cannabis use, cannabis use disorder, and other psychiatric disorders.

Cannabis policies vary from strict prohibition to commercialised legalisation and are rapidly evolving worldwide. Here, we reviewed evidence for associations between international cannabis policy changes from 2000-25 and cannabis use, cannabis use disorder, and other psychiatric disorders. Commercialised legal markets for non-medical use in Canada and the USA were associated with increased prevalence of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder in adults and increases in cannabis potency since legalisation. There was no consistent evidence for associations between policy change and the prevalence
