Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is an important statistical technique that explores the linear relationships between two sets of variables. In this article, we propose a new generalization of CCA named sparse Gaussianized CCA (SGCCA) for high-dimensional data analysis. SGCCA has a number of favorable properties. First, it is conceptually easy to comprehend and efficient to implement. Second, it not only yields sparse and nested canonical vectors, but is also invariant against monotone transformations of any of the variables and hence robust to heavy-tailed data which is a well-known issue

Integration of multi-omics data provides opportunities for revealing biological mechanisms related to certain phenotypes. We propose a novel method of multi-omics integration called supervised deep generalized canonical correlation analysis (SDGCCA) for modeling correlation structures between nonlinear multi-omics manifolds that aims at improving the classification of phenotypes and revealing the biomarkers related to phenotypes. SDGCCA addresses the limitations of other canonical correlation analysis (CCA)-based models (such as deep CCA, deep generalized CCA) by considering complex/nonlinear

BACKGROUND: Personalized medicine requires finding relationships between variables that influence a patient's phenotype and predicting an outcome. Sparse generalized canonical correlation analysis identifies relationships between different groups of variables. This method requires establishing a model of the expected interaction between those variables. Describing these interactions is challenging when the relationship is unknown or when there is no pre-established hypothesis. Thus, our aim was to develop a method to find the relationships between microbiome and host transcriptome data and the

Fatty acid concentrations in blood are potential biomarkers of dietary fat intake, but methodological studies among children are scarce. The large number of fatty acids and their complex interrelationships pose a special challenge in research on fatty acids. Our target was to assess the interrelationships between the total fatty acid profiles in diet and serum of young children. The study subjects were healthy control children from the birth cohort of the Type 1 Diabetes Prediction and Prevention Study. A 3-day food record and a frozen serum sample were available from 135 children at the age o

BACKGROUND: Infection of the CNS is considered to be the major cause of encephalitis and more than 100 different pathogens have been recognized as causative agents. Despite being identified worldwide as an important public health concern, studies on encephalitis are very few and often focus on particular types (with respect to causative agents) of encephalitis (e.g. West Nile, Japanese, etc.). Moreover, a number of other infectious and non-infectious conditions present with similar symptoms, and distinguishing encephalitis from other disguising conditions continues to a challenging task.

This study addresses fairness concerns in Multi-modal Canonical Correlation Analysis (MCCA), a technique for analyzing relationships across multiple datasets. We introduce Fair MCCA (F-MCCA), which mitigates bias by optimizing for both correlation performance and demographic fairness. Our method quantifies disparities using Correlation Disparity Error (CDE) and employs a multi-objective optimization framework to derive projection matrices that achieve consistent correlation levels across sensitive groups. We validate F-MCCA on neuroimaging data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiat

How the brain integrates signals from specific areas has been a longstanding critical question for neurobiologists. Two recent observations suggest a new approach to fMRI data analysis of this question. First, in many instances, the brain analyzes inputs by decomposing the information along several salient dimensions. For example, earlier work demonstrated that the brain splits a monetary gamble in terms of expected reward (ER) and variance of the reward (risk) [Preuschoff, K., Bossaerts, P., Quartz, S., 2006. Neural differentiation of expected reward and risk in human subcortical structures.

The impact of risk factors on the development of peptic ulcers has been shown to vary among different populations. We sought to establish a correlation between these factors and their involvement in the occurrence of peptic ulcers for which a canonical correlation analysis was applied. We included 7,014 patient records (48.6% women, 18.4% duodenal ulcer [DU], 4.6% gastric ulcer [GU]) of those underwent upper gastroendoscopy for the last 5 years. The variables measured are endoscopic findings (DU, GU, antral gastritis, erosive gastritis, pangastritis, pyloric deformity, bulbar deformity, bleedi

Steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) are generated in the parieto-occipital regions, accompanied by background noise and artifacts. A strong pre-processing method is required to reduce this background noise and artifacts. This study proposed a narrow band-pass filtered canonical correlation analysis (NBPFCCA) to recognize frequency components in SSVEP signals. The proposed method is tested on the publicly available 40 stimulus frequencies dataset recorded from 35 subjects and 4 class in-house dataset acquired from 10 subjects. The performance of the proposed NBPFCCA method is compared

The advances in technologies for acquiring brain imaging and high-throughput genetic data allow the researcher to access a large amount of multi-modal data. Although the sparse canonical correlation analysis is a powerful bi-multivariate association analysis technique for feature selection, we are still facing major challenges in integrating multi-modal imaging genetic data and yielding biologically meaningful interpretation of imaging genetic findings. In this study, we propose a novel multi-task learning based structured sparse canonical correlation analysis (MTS2CCA) to deliver interpretabl

Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality trait that has been consistently linked to both negative and positive mental health outcomes. Yet recent research has increasingly reduced perfectionism to broad higher-order factors leaving specific dimensions underexamined. The present study examined how the six dimensions of Multidimensional Perfectionism according to Frost et al. (1990)-Concern over Mistakes, Doubts about Actions, Personal Standards, Organization, Parental Expectations, and Parental Criticism-relate to positive and negative mental health outcomes among Filipino young adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychological focus on supernatural credence has overlooked how behavioural engagement with the paranormal relates to wellbeing. Addressing this gap, this study distinguished between paranormal belief (PB; cognitive credence) and paranormal involvement (PI; behavioural engagement) and examined multivariate associations with positive psychological functioning. It further investigated whether PB and PI represented discrete yet related dimensions of personal paranormal salience (i.e., perceived significance).

Integrating high-dimensional multi-omics data is essential for uncovering the coordinated molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression and improving survival prediction. DNA methylation and mRNA expression represent two tightly coupled regulatory layers; however, many existing approaches either model them independently or rely on linear assumptions that fail to capture the nonlinear cross-omics structure. Here, we propose MT-ADSCCA, a multitask adaptive deep sparse canonical correlation analysis framework that jointly learns correlated latent representations, selects interpretable multi-

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) is a valuable non-invasive method for quantifying brain metabolites. Most MRS spectra are pre-processed by taking the mean of several single-acquisition transients, ultimately resulting in peaks associated with biologically significant molecules. However, simply taking the mean of the transients is prone to errors due to outliers and the non-independence of sequential data acquisitions. Furthermore, this approach cannot identify whether peaks corresponding to different metabolites tend to co-vary across acquisitions. Averaging also assumes a sing

Quality-relevant process monitoring has attracted much attention for its ability to assist in maintaining efficient plant operation. However, when the process suffers from non-stationary and over-complex (with noise, multiplicative faults, etc.) characteristics, the traditional methods usually cannot be effectively applied. To this end, a novel method, termed as Robust adaptive boosted canonical correlation analysis (Rab-CCA), is proposed to monitor the wastewater treatment processes. First, a robust decomposition method is proposed to mitigate the defects of standard CCA by decomposing the co

Current developments of neuroimaging and genetics promote an integrative and compressive study of schizophrenia. However, it is still difficult to explore how gene mutations are related to brain abnormalities due to the high dimension but low sample size of these data. Conventional approaches reduce the dimension of dataset separately and then calculate the correlation, but ignore the effects of the response variables and the structure of data. To improve the identification of risk genes and abnormal brain regions on schizophrenia, in this paper, we propose a novel method called Independence a

Functional ultrasound (fUS) is a promising imaging method for evaluating brain function in animals and human neonates. fUS images local cerebral blood volume changes to map brain activity. One application of fUS imaging is the quantification of functional connectivity (FC), which characterizes the strength of the connections between functionally connected brain areas. fUS-FC enables characterization of important cerebral alterations in pathological animal models, with potential for translation into identification of biomarkers of neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the sensitivity of fUS to

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic nasal endoscopy is a routine measure of sinonasal inflammation in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Although multiple staging systems have been proposed and evaluated, evidence of association between concurrent symptoms and endoscopic findings remains discordant. The goal of this study is to identify the relevant endoscopic attributes associated with symptom burden, and to systematically derive a weighted endoscopic scale that optimizes prediction of concurrent symptoms.
METHODS: Reported baseline symptom (22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test [SNOT-22]) and endosco

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in using steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. However, several aspects of current SSVEP-based BCI systems need improvement, specifically in relation to speed, user variation and ease of use. With these improvements in mind, this paper presents an online multi-channel SSVEP-based BCI system using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) method for extraction of frequency information associated with the SSVEP. The key parameters, channel location, window length and the number of harmonics, are in
